जरा-सा भी गुण देखो, दोष नहीं

संसारे सुखिनो जीवा भवन्ति गुणग्राहकाः

उत्तमास्ते हि विज्ञेयाः कृष्णवद् दन्तपश्यकाः ॥

एक बार देवराज इन्द्रने अपनी देवसभामें कहा कि इस समय मनुष्यलोकमें श्रीकृष्ण देव (कोई राजा) ही सबसे श्रेष्ठ और गुणशाली पुरुष हैं। ऐसे श्रीकृष्णकी बड़ाई एक देवताको अच्छी नहीं लगी। वह परीक्षा करनेके लिये मरे कुत्तेका रूप धारण करके रास्ते में पड़ गया। उसके शरीरसे दुर्गन्ध निकल रही थी। उसका मुँह फट गया था। रास्ते जाते श्रीकृष्णनेउस मरे कुत्तेको देखा और कहा – ‘ ‘अहो, इस मरे कुत्तेके दाँतोंकी पङ्क्ति कैसी निर्मल, मोती-जैसी दीप रही है!’ इस प्रकार सड़ी दुर्गन्धके दोषकी ओर उनका ध्यान नहीं गया और उसमें जो जरा-सा गुण था, उसीपर उनकी दृष्टि गयी। यह देखकर देवता कुत्तेका रूप त्यागकर अपने रूपमें प्रकट हो गया और बोला – ‘सच है, सच्ची गुणग्राहकता और गुण- दर्शनपरायणता तो आपमें ही है। संसारमें गुणग्राहकलोग ही सुखी हुआ करते हैं।’

Happy beings in the world are the recipients of virtues
They should be understood to be the best, for they look like black teeth.
Once, Indra, the king of the gods, said in his assembly of gods that at this time, Lord Krishna (a king) is the best and most virtuous man in the human world. Such praise of Krishna did not please a god. He took the form of a dead dog to test him. His body was stinking. His mouth was split open. On the way, Krishna saw the dead dog and said, ‘Oh, what a pure, pearly lamp the row of teeth of this dead dog has been!’ Thus they did not pay attention to the defect of the rotten stench and focused on the slightest quality it had. Seeing this, the god gave up the form of a dog and appeared in his own form and said, ‘It is true that the true grasp of virtues and devotion to virtues is in you. In the world, only those who receive virtue are happy.
