वृत्रासुरका वध करनेपर देवराज इन्द्रको ब्रह्महत्या लगी। इस पापके भयसे वे जाकर एक सरोवरमें छिप गये। देवताओंको जब ढूँढ़नेपर भी देवराजका पता नहीं लगा, तब वे बड़े चिन्तित हुए। स्वर्गका राज्यसिंहासन सूना रहे तो त्रिलोकीमें सुव्यवस्था कैसे रह सकती हैं। अन्तमें देवताओंने देवगुरु बृहस्पतिकी सलाहसे राजा नहुषको इन्द्रके सिंहासनपर तबतक लिये बैठाया, जबतक इन्द्रका पता न लग जाय इन्द्रत्व पाकर राजा नहुष प्रभुताके मदसे मदान्ध हो । गये। उन्होंने इन्द्रपत्नी शचीदेवीको अपनी पत्नी बनाना चाहा। शचीके पास दूतके द्वारा उन्होंने संदेश भेजा-‘मैं जब इन्द्र हो चुका हूँ, इन्द्राणीको मुझे स्वीकार करना ही चाहिये।’
पतिव्रता शचीदेवी बड़े संकटमें पड़ीं। अपने पति की अनुपस्थितिमें पतिके राज्यमें अव्यवस्था हो, यह भी उन्हें स्वीकार नहीं था और अपना पातिव्रत्य भी उन्हें परम प्रिय था। वे भी देवगुरुकी शरणमें पहुंचीं बृहस्पतिजीने उन्हें आश्वासन देकर युक्ति बतला दी। देवगुरुके आदेशानुसार शचीने उस दूतके द्वारा नहुषको कहला दिया- ‘यदि राजेन्द्र नहुष ऐसी पालकीपर बैठकर मेरे पास आवें जिसे सप्तर्षि ढो रहे हों तो मैं उनकी सेवामें उपस्थित हो सकती हूँ।’काम एवं अधिकारके मदसे मतवाले नहुने | महर्षियोंको पालकी ले चलनेकी आज्ञा दे दी। राग-द्वेष | तथा मानापमानसे रहित सप्तर्षिगणोंने नहुषकी पालकी उठा ली। लेकिन वे ऋषिगण इस भयसे कि पैरेकि नीचे कोई चींटी या अन्य क्षुद्र जीव दब न जायें भूमिको देख-देखकर धीरे-धीरे पैर रखते चलते थे। | उधर कामातुर नहुषको इन्द्राणीके पास शीघ्र पहुँचनेको | आतुरता थी। वे बार-बार ऋषियोंको शीघ्र चलने को कह रहे थे। लेकिन ऋषि तो अपने इच्छानुसार ही चलते रहे।
‘सर्प ! सर्प !’ (शीघ्र चलो ! शीघ्र चलो!) कहकर नहुषने झुंझलाकर पैर पटका। संयोगवश उनका पैर पालकी ढोते महर्षि भृगुको लग गया। महर्षिके नेत्र लाल हो उठे। पालकी उन्होंने पटक दी और हाथमें जल लेकर शाप देते हुए बोले- ‘दुष्ट ! तू अपनेसे | बड़ोंके द्वारा पालकी ढुवाता है और मदान्ध होकर । पूजनीय लोगोंको पैरसे ठुकराकर ‘सर्प, सर्प’ कहता है, । अतः सर्प होकर यहाँसे गिर !’
महर्षि भृगुके शाप देते ही नहुषका तेज नष्ट हो गया। भयके मारे वे काँपने लगे। शीघ्र ही वे बड़े भारी अजगर होकर स्वर्गसे पृथ्वीपर गिर पड़े।

‘snake ! snake !’ (Come quickly! Come quickly!) Nahushana threw his feet angrily. Coincidentally, his foot fell on Maharishi Bhrigu carrying the palanquin. The Maharshi’s eyes turned red. He threw the palanquin and took water in his hand and cursed, ‘Wicked! Tu Apnese | He carries the palanquin by the elders and becomes drunk. He rejects the worshipers with his feet and calls them ‘Serpent, snake’ So become a snake and fall from here!’
Nahusha’s splendor was destroyed as soon as Maharishi Bhrigu cursed him. They trembled with fear. Soon they became huge dragons and fell from heaven to earth.
