मिथ्याभिमान

चक्रवर्ती सम्राट् भरतकी धारणा थी कि वे समस्त भूमण्डलके प्रथम चक्रवर्ती हैं-कम-से-कम वे ऐसे प्रथम चक्रवर्ती हैं, जो वृषभाचलपर पहुँच सके हैं। वे उस पर्वतके शिखरपर अपना नाम अङ्कित करना चाहते थे। उनकी धारणा थी कि यहाँ उनका यह पहला नाम होगा।

शिखरपर पहुँचकर भरतके पैर ठिठक गये। उन्होंने ऊपरसे नीचेतक पर्वतके शिखरको भलीभाँति देखा जहाँतक वे जा सकते थे, शिखरकी अन्य दिशाओंमें गये। शिखरपर इतने नाम अङ्कित थे कि कहीं भी एक नाम और लिखा जा सके, इतना स्थान नहीं था । लिखेहुए नामोंमेंसे एक भी ऐसा नाम नहीं था, जो चक्रवर्तीका नाम न हो।

भरत खिन्न हो गये। उनका अभिमान कितना मिथ्या था। उन्होंने विवश होकर वहाँ एक नाम मिटवा दिया और उस स्थानपर अपना नाम अङ्कित कराया; किंतु लौटनेपर राजपुरोहितने कहा – ‘राजन् ! नामको अमर रखनेका आधार ही आपने नष्ट कर दिया। अब तो आपने नाम मिटाकर नाम लिखनेकी परम्परा प्रारम्भ कर दी। कौन कह सकता है कि वहाँ आपका नाम कौन कब मिटा देगा।’

Chakravarti Emperor Bharata had the belief that he is the first Chakravarti of the whole earth – at least he is the first Chakravarti who could reach Vrishbhachal. He wanted to inscribe his name on the top of that mountain. He had the impression that this would be his first name here.
Bharat’s feet got frozen after reaching the summit. He looked at the peak of the mountain from top to bottom and went as far as he could go in other directions of the peak. There were so many names inscribed on the peak that there was not enough space to write one more name anywhere. There was not a single name among the names written, which was not the name of Chakravarti.
Bharat got upset. How false was his pride. He was forced to erase a name there and got his name inscribed at that place; But on returning, the Rajpurohit said – ‘ Rajan! You destroyed the basis of keeping the name immortal. Now you have started the tradition of erasing the name and writing the name. Who can say who will erase your name there.’
