एक घुड़सवार कहीं जा रहा था। उसके हाथसे चाबुक गिर पड़ा। उसके साथ उस समय बहुत से मुसाफिर पैदल चल रहे थे; परंतु उसने किसीसे चाबुक उठाकर दे देनेके लिये नहीं कहा। खुद घोड़ेसे उतरा और चाबुक उठाकर फिर सवार हो गया। यह देखकर साथ चलनेवाले मुसाफिरोंने कहा- ‘भाई साहब! आपने इतनी तकलीफ क्यों की? चाबुक हमीं लोग उठाकर दे देते, इतने से कामके लिये आप क्यों उतरे ?”
घुड़सवारने कहा- ‘भाइयो! आपका कहना तो बहुत ही सज्जनताका है, परंतु मैं आपसे ऐसी मदद क्योंकर ले सकता हूँ! प्रभुकी यही आज्ञा है कि जिससे उपकार प्राप्त हो, बदलेमें जहाँतक हो सके, उसका उपकार करना चाहिये। उपकारके बदलेमें प्रत्युपकार करनेकी स्थिति हो, तभी उपकारका भार सिर उठाना चाहिये। मैं आपको पहचानता नहीं, न तो आप ही मुझको जानते हैं। राहमें अचानक हमलोगोंका साथ हो गया है, फिर कब मिलना होगा, इसका कुछ भी पता नहीं है। ऐसी हालतमें मैं उपकारका भार कैसे उठाऊँ ?’यह सुनकर मुसाफिरोंने कहा- ‘अरे भाई साहब! इसमें उपकार क्या है ? आप जैसे भले आदमीके हाथसे चाबुक गिर पड़ा, उसे उठाकर हमने दे दिया। हमें इसमें मेहनत ही क्या हुई ?’
घुड़सवारने कहा- ‘चाहे छोटी-सी बात या छोटा सा ही काम क्यों न हो, मैं लेता तो आपकी मदद ही न? छोटे-छोटे कामोंमें मदद लेते-लेते ही बड़े कामों में भी मदद लेनेकी आदत पड़ जाती है और आगे चलकर मनुष्य अपने स्वावलम्बी स्वभावको खोकर पराधीन बन जाता है। आत्मामें एक तरहकी सुस्ती आ जाती है और फिर छोटी-छोटी बातोंमें दूसरोंका मुँह ताकनेकी बान पड़ जाती है। यही मनमें रहता है, मेरा यह काम कोई दूसरा कर दे, मुझे हाथ-पैर कुछ भी न हिलाने पड़ें। इसलिये जबतक कोई विपत्ति न आवे या आत्माकी उन्नतिके लिये आवश्यक न हो, तबतक केवल आरामके लिये किसीसे किसी तरहकी भी मदद नहीं लेनी चाहिये। जिनको मददकी जरूरत न हो, वे जब मदद लेने लगते हैं, तब जिनको जरूरत होती है, उन्हें मदद मिलनी मुश्किल हो जाती है।’
A horseman was going somewhere. The whip fell from his hand. Many travelers were walking with him at that time; But he did not ask anyone to pick up the whip and give it to him. He himself got down from the horse, picked up the whip and rode again. Seeing this, the passengers traveling along said- ‘Brother! Why did you take so much trouble? People would have given us the whip, why did you come down for so much work?”
The horse rider said – ‘Brothers! What you say is very gentlemanly, but why can I take such help from you! This is the order of the Lord that the one from whom the favor is received, in return, as far as possible, he should be favoured. If there is a situation to reciprocate the favor, then only the burden of the favor should be taken on the head. I do not know you, neither do you know me. Suddenly we have been together on the way, nothing is known about when we will meet again. How can I bear the burden of favor in such a condition?’ Hearing this, the passengers said – ‘Oh brother! What is the merit in this? The whip fell from the hand of a good man like you, we picked it up and gave it to you. Why did we have to work hard in this?
The horse rider said – ‘ Even if it is a small thing or a small work, I would have taken your help, wouldn’t it? By taking help in small tasks, one gets used to taking help in big tasks as well, and later on, man loses his self-supporting nature and becomes dependent. A kind of lethargy comes in the soul and then one tends to look at the faces of others in small matters. This is what remains in my mind, someone else should do this work of mine, I don’t have to move my hands and legs. That’s why one should not take any kind of help from anyone just for the sake of comfort, until some calamity comes or it is not necessary for the progress of the soul. Those who do not need help, when they start taking help, then it becomes difficult for those who need it.
