कठपुतलियोंको नृत्य-अभिनय करते-करते काफी समय हो गया। एक दिन कुछ कठपुतलियोंको अपने नृत्य कौशलपर अभिमान हो आया। उन्होंने सोचा, ‘हमारा नृत्य कितना आकर्षक है। हम नृत्यकला में कितनी पारंगत हैं। लोग हमारा नृत्य कितने चावसे देखते हैं, लेकिन हमें हमेशा सूत्रधारकी इच्छाके अनुरूप ही चलना पड़ता है। क्यों न, हम इससे सम्बन्ध तोड़कर स्वतन्त्र हो जायँ ।’
एक अनुभवी वृद्ध कठपुतलीने उन्हें समझाया ‘तुम्हारा विचार ठीक नहीं। देखो, सूत्रधारसे सम्बन्ध तोड़नेकी नादानी मत करना, वरना तुम निष्प्राण होकर रह जाओगी। नृत्यकलाका प्रदर्शन तो दूर, तुम्हारा स्वयंका अस्तित्व ही खतरेमें पड़ जायगा’, परंतु उन अभिमानी नवोदित कठपुतलियोंने उसकी एक न सुनी। इतनेमें खेल प्रारम्भ करनेका समय हो गया। सूत्रधारने जैसे ही खेल प्रारम्भ किया, उन सब कठपुतलियोंने अपने-अपने सूत्र उससे विच्छिन्न कर लिये। वे स्वतन्त्र होकर नृत्य करनेका प्रयत्न करने लगीं, किंतु आश्चर्य ! अब वे अपना कोई भी अंग संचालित करनेमें असमर्थ थीं। उन्होंने बहुतेरी कोशिश की, लेकिन वे नृत्य करनेमें सफल न हो सकीं
तभी उनकी दृष्टि उस वृद्ध कठपुतलीपर पड़ी। वह सूत्रधारके सूत्रसे जुड़ी हुई बड़ी तल्लीनतासे नृत्य कर रही थी। यह देखकर वे लज्जित होकर मन-ही-मन सूत्रधारसे क्षमा माँगने लगीं। सूत्रधारने देखा – कुछ कठपुतलियाँ सूत्र विच्छिन्न होनेके कारण निर्जीव-सी पड़ी हैं। उसने उनका अभिमान क्षमाकर फिरसे उनका सूत्र जोड़ दिया। सूत्रके जुड़ते ही फिरसे प्राणोंका संचार होनेपर वे अभिमान त्यागकर पुनः नृत्य करने लगीं।
यह देखकर वह वृद्ध कठपुतली आनन्दसे भर गयी और नृत्य करते-करते धीरे-धीरे गुनगुनाने लगी- उमा दारु जोषित की नाईं । सबहि नचावत रामु गुसाईं ॥

It’s been a long time since the puppets dance and act. One day some puppets became proud of their dancing skills. He thought, ‘How charming is our dance. We are so proficient in dance. People watch our dance with so much interest, but we always have to follow the wishes of the master. Why not, let us break ties with it and become independent.’
An experienced old puppeteer explained to him ‘Your idea is not right. Look, don’t do the foolishness of breaking the relationship with the Sutradhar, otherwise you will be left lifeless. Leave aside the performance of choreography, your very existence will be in danger’, but those arrogant budding puppets did not listen to him. Meanwhile, it was time to start the game. As soon as the narrator started the game, all those puppets separated their threads from him. She became independent and tried to dance, but surprise! Now she was unable to operate any of her organs. She tried hard, but she could not dance
That’s why his eyes fell on that old puppet. She was dancing with great rapture attached to the thread of the thread holder. Seeing this, she felt ashamed and started apologizing to the Sutradhar. The facilitator saw that some of the puppets were lying lifeless due to the disconnection of the thread. He forgave their pride and joined their thread again. As soon as the sutras were connected, when there was communication of life again, she left her pride and started dancing again.
Seeing this, the old puppet was filled with joy and started humming slowly while dancing – Uma Daru is like Joshit. Everyone dances Ramu Gusai.
