ऋषिकेशके जंगलमें पहले एक महात्मा रहते थे। उनका नाम था द्वारकादासजी वे बिलकुल दिगम्बर रहा करते थे।
एक बार एक साहब उस जंगलमें शिकार करने गये। उन्होंने एक बाघके जोड़ेमेंसे बासको तो मार दिया, किंतु बाघिन बचकर भाग गयी। तब साहबका उसको भी मारनेका मन हुआ। बस, वे खूब सँभलकर मचानपर बैठ गये।इसी समय द्वारकादासजी साहबके पास गये और उससे कहा कि ‘आज बाघिनको मत मारना, वह दुःखी है।’ यह कहकर वे वहीं लेट गये।
इतनेमें बाघिन आयी। यह देखकर साहबने बंदूक तानी। द्वारकादासजी ऊँचे स्वरमें चिल्लाये- ‘तुझे मना किया था न, फिर तू क्यों नहीं मानता!’ साहब रुक गये । बाघिन आयी और उनके चारों तरफ चक्कर लगाकर वापस चली गयी।यह देखकर साहबको बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ। वे आकर उनसे पूछने लगे-‘महाराज आपको बाघिनने क्यों नहीं मारा।’
महात्मा—’मैं किसीको नहीं मारता, तब वह मुझे क्यों मारेगी।’साहब – ‘आपको डर नहीं लगता क्या ?’
महात्मा – ‘नहीं।’
साहब—’मुझे भगवान्के दर्शनका कुछ उपाय बतला दीजिये।’ महात्माने उसको कुछ उपाय बता दिये ।

Earlier a Mahatma used to live in the forest of Rishikesh. His name was Dwarkadasji. He used to be a Digambar.
Once a gentleman went hunting in that forest. He killed the male of a pair of tigers, but the tigress escaped. Then sir felt like killing him too. That’s all, they sat down on the scaffold very carefully. At the same time, Dwarkadasji went to Saheb and told him, ‘Don’t kill the tigress today, she is sad.’ Saying this he lay down there.
Meanwhile the tigress came. Seeing this, sir pointed the gun. Dwarkadasji shouted in a loud voice – ‘I had forbidden you, then why don’t you agree!’ Sir stopped. The tigress came and went back after circling around them. Sir was very surprised to see this. They came and asked him – ‘Maharaj, why didn’t the tigress kill you?’
Mahatma – ‘I don’t kill anyone, then why would she kill me.’ Sir – ‘Aren’t you scared?’
Mahatma – ‘No.’
Sir-‘Tell me some way to see God.’ Mahatma told him some remedies.
