दुष्टों को भी सौजन्यसे जीतिये

एक बार एक तंग रास्तेपर काशिराज और कोसलराज दोनोंके ही रथ आमने-सामने आ गये। अब बिना रास्तेसे एक ओर हटे दूसरे रथको निकलनेकी गुंजाइश न थी। काशिराजके सारथिने कहा- ‘मेरे रथपर महाराज काशीनरेश हैं; तुम रास्ता दो, हम निकल जायँ । ‘

‘नहीं-नहीं, तुम रास्ता छोड़कर हट जाओ। तुम्हें मुझे रास्ता देना चाहिये; क्योंकि मेरे रथपर कोसलके राजा बैठे हैं।’ दूसरे सारथिने कहा ।

‘जो अवस्थामें छोटा हो, वह बड़ेको जाने दे ।’ दोनोंको यह बात पसंद आ गयी। पर कोई हल न निकल सका; क्योंकि दोनों राजाओंकी अवस्था सर्वथा समान थी।

‘जो बड़ा राजा हो, उसे प्रथम निकलनेका अधिकार होना चाहिये’ इसे दोनों सारथियोंने उचित समझा। पर यह भी कोई हल न बन सका; क्योंकि दोनों राजाओंका राज्य समान- तीन सौ योजनका था ‘जो अधिक सदाचारी हो, उसे प्रथम निकलनेका

अधिकार है।’ दोनोंने फिर एक हलका मार्ग ढूँढ़ा । कोसलराजके सारथिने बतलाया ‘मेरे राजा भलेके साथ भला तथा शठके साथ शठताके साथ व्यवहार करते हैं। यह इनका महान् गुण है।’

काशिराजके सारथिने बतलाया ‘तब तो मेरा रथ ही निकलेगा, क्योंकि मेरे राजा सद्व्यवहारसे ही दूसरोंके दुर्गुणोंको दूर करते हैं।’

इसपर कोसलराजने स्वयं काशिराजको मार्ग दे

Once the chariots of both Kashiraj and Kosalaraj came face to face on a narrow road. Now there was no scope for the other chariot to pass without moving out of the way. Kashiraj’s charioteer said- ‘Maharaj Kashinresh is on my chariot; You give way, we will leave. ,
‘No-no, you leave the way and go away. you must give way to me; Because the king of Kosal is sitting on my chariot.’ said the second charioteer.
‘The one who is younger in status should let the elder go.’ Both of them liked this thing. But no solution could be found; Because the condition of both the kings was exactly the same.
‘The one who is a big king, he should have the right to come out first’ both the charioteers thought it appropriate. But even this could not be a solution; Because the kingdom of both the kings was of the same three-hundred plan.
Have the right. Both then found a lighter way. Kosalaraj’s charioteer told, ‘My king treats good with good and bad with bad. This is his great quality.
Kashiraj’s charioteer told, ‘Then only my chariot will come out, because my king removes the bad qualities of others only by good behavior.’
On this, the King of Kosal himself gave way to the King of Kashi.
