संतका मौन बहुत बड़ा और दिव्य भूषण है। वाणीके मौनसे संतोंने आश्चर्यजनक बड़े-बड़े कार्योंका सम्पादन किया है। ग्यारहवीं शताब्दीके दूसरे चरण की बात है। सम्राट् हेनरी द्वितीय कुछ दिनोंके लिये इटली गये हुए थे। उन्होंने संत रोमाल्डको सम्मानपूर्वक अपनी राजसभामें पधारनेका निमन्त्रण दिया, पर उन्होंने जाना स्वीकार नहीं किया। सम्राट् अपने प्रयत्नमें संलग्न थे; कुछ शिष्यों और भक्तोंके विशेष आग्रह और प्रार्थनासे संतने सम्राट्की राजसभामें प्रवेश किया। सम्राट्सहित सभासद् उनके सामने उठ खड़े हुए। उनके आसन ग्रहण करनेपर सारी राजसभामें दिव्यता और शान्ति छा गयी।’मेरी सबसे बड़ी इच्छा यही है कि मेरी आत्मा आपकी ही तरह भगवान्के चरणदेशमें समर्पित रहे ।’ सम्राट् अपने सिंहासनसे उठ खड़े हुए, सादर अभिवादन किया। लोग समझते थे कि संत कुछ कहेंगे, पर उनको नितान्त मौन देखकर वे आश्चर्यचकित हो गये। सम्राट्ने सोचा कि संत मौन रहकर मानो मेरी प्रार्थनाको स्वीकार कर रहे हैं। उस मौनमें ऐसी सहज पवित्रता थी कि सम्राट्के मनमें यह कल्पना भी नहीं आयी कि संतका यह आचरण अभिमानजनित है और यों मेरे प्रति उनके मनमें उपेक्षाका भाव है। बल्कि सम्राट्ने इस मौनके मूलमें संतकी विनम्रता और कृपा समझी। सम्राट्को संतके मौन-धारणसे बड़ी प्रसन्नता हुई।

Saint’s silence is very big and divine. With the silence of speech, the sages have done amazingly big works. It is a matter of the second phase of the eleventh century. Emperor Henry II had gone to Italy for a few days. He respectfully invited Saint Romald to attend his court, but he did not accept to go. The emperors were engaged in their endeavours; With the special request and prayer of some disciples and devotees, the saint entered the king’s court. The councilors along with the emperor stood up in front of him. On taking his seat, divinity and peace enveloped the entire royal assembly. ‘My biggest wish is that my soul remains devoted to God’s feet like yours.’ The emperor got up from his throne, greeted with respect. People thought that the saint would say something, but they were surprised to see him completely silent. The emperor thought that the saint was silently accepting my prayer. There was such an innate purity in that silence that the emperor did not even imagine that this behavior of the saint was born of pride and thus he had a feeling of neglect towards me. Rather, the emperor understood the humility and grace of the saint to be the root of this silence. The emperor was greatly pleased by the saint’s silence.
