स्थितप्रज्ञता

सन् 1916 की 23 जुलाईको लोकमान्य तिलककी 60 वीं वर्षगाँठ थी। दो वर्ष पूर्व ही वे माँडलेमें छ: वर्षकी सजा भोगकर छूटे थे। उनका यह हीरक जयन्ती उत्सव सभीने धूम-धामसे मनानेका निश्चय किया। सार्वजनिक अभिनन्दनका पूनामें आयोजन करके एक लाख रुपयोंकी थैली उन्हें देनेका निर्णय हुआ। वह शुभ दिन आ गया । देशके कोने-कोनेसे अनेक राष्ट्रिय नेता एवं तिलकभक्त उनके अभिनन्दनार्थ पूनेमें पधारे थे। आयोजन गायकवाड़ेमें किया गया था। सभी कुशलप्रश्न, हँसी-मजाक और तिलकके कार्यसेकृतकृत्यताका अनुभव करनेमें लीन थे। स्वयं तिलक महाराज भी सम्भाषणोंमें विलक्षण रीतिसे मग्न थे। इसी बीच जिला पुलिस सुपरिटेंडेंट आये और उन्होंने तिलकको एक नोटिस दिया। नोटिसमें लिखा था- ‘आपके अहमदनगर और बेलगाँवमें दिये गये भाषण राजद्रोहात्मक हैं, इसलिये एक वर्षतक नेकचलनीका बीस हजारका मुचलका और दस-दस हजारकी दो जमानतें आपसे क्यों न ली जायँ ?’ किसी स्थितप्रज्ञकी तरह तिलकने नोटिस ले लिया और फिर समारम्भमें आकर उसी तरह समरस हो गये।

Lokmanya Tilak’s 60th anniversary was on 23rd July in 1916. Two years ago, he was released from Mandalay after serving a six-year sentence. Everyone decided to celebrate his diamond jubilee with great pomp. It was decided to give him a bag of one lakh rupees by organizing a public reception in Poona. That auspicious day has come. Many national leaders and Tilak devotees from every corner of the country had come to Pune to congratulate him. The event was organized at Gaikwad. All were engrossed in clever questions, laughter and jokes and feeling grateful for Tilak’s work. Tilak Maharaj himself was also unusually engrossed in the talks. Meanwhile, the District Superintendent of Police came and gave a notice to Tilak. It was written in the notice- ‘Your speeches given in Ahmednagar and Belgaum are seditious, so why not take a surety of 20 thousand and two sureties of 10,000 each for one year from Necchalni?’ Tilak took the notice like a wise person and then came to the ceremony and got along in the same way.
