परमात्माके भक्ति-साम्राज्यमें निवास करनेवाले संत सदा अभय होते हैं। वे किसीसे भी नहीं डरते। सोलह सौ वर्ष पहलेकी एक घटना है मिश्र देशके प्रसिद्ध संत हिलेरियोके पूर्वाश्रमकी। बचपन से ही उनकी संतोंके चरणोंमें श्रद्धा थी। वे संत एन्टोनीकी प्रसिद्धिसे आकृष्ट होकर उनसे मरुस्थलमें मिलने गये थे। वे उनके समीप दो मासतक रह गये। घर लौटनेपर उन्हें अपने माता-पिताकी मृत्युका समाचार मिला। इस समय उनकी अवस्था केवल पंद्रह वर्षकी थी। उन्होंने अपनी सारी सम्पत्ति सम्बन्धियों और गरीबोंको दे दी और स्वयं भगवान्का भजन करनेके लिये घरसे बाहर निकल पड़े।
उन्होंने मरुस्थलमें रहनेका निश्चय किया, जो समुद्र-तटसे थोड़ी दूरपर अवस्थित था तथा झाड़ झंखाड़ोंसे अमित भयानक दीख पड़ता था। मित्रोंने सावधान किया कि वह स्थान लूटपाट और मार-काटके लिये प्रसिद्ध है; दिन दहाड़े डाकूलोग सारी वस्तुएँ।छीनकर मार डालते हैं। ‘मुझे भगवान्का भरोसा है। संसारमें मैं किसीसे नहीं डरता। केवल मृत्युका भय लगता है।’ हिलोरियोने मरुस्थलके लिये प्रस्थान किया।
‘यदि आपको इस मरुस्थलमें कोई मार डाले तो आप क्या करेंगे? यदि चोर और डाकू छेड़-छाड़ करें तो उनसे आप कैसा व्यवहार कीजियेगा ?’ कुछ अपरिचित व्यक्तियोंने संतसे पूछा ।
‘गरीब और नंगे- भूखे रहनेवाले किसीसे भी नहीं डरते हैं।’ संतका उत्तर था ।
‘पर वे आपको जानसे मार सकते हैं।’ उन लोगोंने अपने वचन दोहराये।
‘यह नितान्त सच है। यही कारण है कि मैं उनसे नहीं डरता। मैं मरनेके लिये सदा प्रस्तुत हूँ।’ संत हिलोरियोकी निर्भयताने अपरिचित व्यक्तियोंको भी आश्चर्य चकित कर दिया। वे मरुस्थलके डाकू थे, जो वेष बदलकर संतकी परीक्षा लेने आये थे।

‘It is absolutely true. That’s why I don’t fear them. I am always ready to die.’ The fearlessness of Saint Hilario surprised even the strangers. They were bandits of the desert, who had come in disguise to test the saint.
