कऊसिनी मार दियो री टोना मन मोरा मचले श्याम सलोना,
सांवले सलोने सुंदर श्याम
श्याम श्याम केहि बिधि भये कहो सखी यह बात।
मात तात गोरे सबै कारो कृष्णहि गात॥
बिछुरत को अति दुख लह्यो, सुरति करी बसुजाम।
राधा की विरहाग्नि में भयो श्याम जरि श्याम॥ (रामरत्न अवस्थी)
अर्थात् :- एक सखी दूसरी सखी से पूछती है कि श्यामसुन्दर श्यामवर्ण क्यों हैं जबकि उनके माता-पिता तो गोरे हैं।
दूसरी सखी कहती है कि श्रीराधा से बिछुड़ने पर दिनरात उनकी याद कर दु:खी होते हैं, इसलिए विरहाग्नि में जलकर श्यामसुन्दर काले हो गए हैं।
नवीन मेघ के समान श्यामवर्ण होने से श्रीकृष्ण नीलमणि, सांवरा, श्यामसुन्दर, श्याम, सांवलिया सेठ व घनश्याम कहलाते हैं।
सांवले सलोने श्रीकृष्ण को देख यशोदाजी को हुआ आश्चर्य
सूतिकागृह में व्रजराजनन्दिनी यशोदा ने जब अपने बगल में लेटे शिशु को देखा तो वे सोचने लगीं, क्या यह बालक मणिमय है?
इसके शरीर के अंग नीलमणि नीलम से, होंठ रक्तरागमणि (रूबी) से और नख अनार के दानों के समान रंग वाली हीरकमणि या पुखराजमणि से बने हैं।
परन्तु यह तो संभव नहीं; क्योंकि मणि तो कठोर होती है; यह शिशु तो अत्यन्त मृदु और सुकुमार है।
लगता है विधाता ने इसकी रचना पुष्पों से की है, मानो नीलकमल से इसके अंगों का, बन्धूकपुष्पों से इसके होंठों का, जपाकुसुमों से इसके हाथ व पैर के तलवों का और मल्लिकापुष्पों से इसके नखों का निर्माण हुआ है, इसी कारण वे श्रीकृष्ण को ‘नीलमणि’ कहकर बुलाती थीं।
गोरे नन्द जशोदा गोरी, तू कत स्यामल गात:-
इन्द्रदेव के कोप से व्रजवासियों और गौओं की रक्षा के लिए श्रीकृष्ण ने जब सात दिन तक गोवर्धन पर्वत को अपनी कनिष्ठिका ऊंगली पर उठाया तो सभी लोगों को प्रसन्नता हुई कि कन्हैया कि वजह से व्रज, व्रजवासियों और गौओं की रक्षा हुई। लेकिन अनेक लोगों को शंका होने लगी कि ’क्या यह नन्दजी का लाला है या कोई बड़ा देव है?’
व्रजवासी नन्दमहल के आंगन में एकत्र हो गए, एक ने कहा:- ‘यह नन्दबाबा का पुत्र नहीं है।’
दूसरा व्रजवासी बोला:- ‘तुझे यह बात अब समझ में आई है, मुझे तो इसके जन्म से ही यही शंका है, नन्दबाबा गोरे हैं, नन्दरानी यशोदा गोरी हैं, पर कन्हैया काला क्यों है, क्या नन्दबाबा किसी दूसरे का लड़का ले आए हैं?’
सभी ने नन्दरायजी से आग्रह किया, महाराज, आप सच-सच बताइए, क्या यह कन्हैया आपका लड़का है?
नन्दबाबा ने हाथ जोड़कर कहा, मैं अपनी गायों की शपथ खाकर कहता हूं। कि कन्हैया मेरा पुत्र है।’
श्रीकृष्ण उस समय यशोदाजी की गोद में खेल रहे थे, जब व्रजवासियों की बात यशोदाजी ने सुनी तो उन्होंने विनोद में श्रीकृष्ण से पूछा:-‘बेटा तू किसका पुत्र है?’
श्रीकृष्ण मचलते हुए बोले:- ‘मैं तेरा बेटा हूं और तू मेरी मां है।’
माता ने कन्हैया को पुचकारते हुए कहा, बेटा ये सब संदेह कर रहे हैं कि मैं और नन्दबाबा गोरे हैं, फिर तू काला कैसे हो गया?’
श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा, ‘मां इसमें तेरा दोष है, मेरा जन्म अंधियारी रात्रि को बारह बजे हुआ।
मैं तुझे जगाने लगा, किन्तु तू जगी नहीं, इसलिए मैं सवेरे तक अन्धकार में लोटता रहा, अन्धकार मुझसे लिपट गया; इसलिए मैं काला हो गया।’
सूरदासजी ने श्रीकृष्ण के बालसुलभ मन में उठने वाली इसी शंका को बड़ी बारीकी के साथ चित्रित किया है:-
मैया मोहै दाऊ बहुत खिझायो।
मोसौ कहत मोल को लीनों, तू जसुमति कब जायौ?
कहा करौ इहि रिसि के मारे, खेलन हौं नहिं जात,
पुनि-पुनि कहत कौन हौ माता, को हौ तेरौ तात।
गोरे नन्द जशोदा गोरी, तू कत स्यामल गात॥
सूरदासजी का यह अत्यन्त लोकप्रिय पद है, इस पद का अर्थ हैं:- बड़े भाई बलदाऊ गौरवर्ण थे, वे श्रीकृष्ण के श्याम रंग पर यदा-कदा उन्हें चिढ़ाया करते थे। एक दिन कन्हैया मैया से बलदाऊ की शिकायत करते हुए कहने लगे:- मैया, दाऊ मुझे ग्वालबालों के सामने बहुत चिढ़ाता है, वह मुझसे कहता है कि यशोदा मैया ने तुझे मोल लिया है।
तेरे माता-पिता कौन हैं, क्योंकि नंदबाबा तो गोरे हैं और मैया यशोदा भी गौरवर्णा हैं, लेकिन तू सांवले रंग का कैसे है, यदि तू उनका पुत्र होता तो तुझे भी गोरा होना चाहिए।
जब दाऊ ऐसा कहता है तो ग्वाल-बाल चुटकी बजाकर मेरा उपहास करते हैं, मुझे नचाते हैं और मुस्कराते हैं, क्या करूं मैया इसी कारण मैं खेलने भी नहीं जाता, इस पर भी तू मुझे ही मारने को दौड़ती है, दाऊ को कभी कुछ नहीं कहती।
श्रीकृष्ण की रोष भरी बातें सुनकर माता यशोदा कन्हैया को समझाकर कहती हैं कि वह बलदाऊ तो बचपन से ही चुगलखोर और धूर्त है।
जब श्रीकृष्ण मैया की बातें सुनकर भी नहीं माने तब यशोदाजी बोलीं, कन्हैया मैं गौओं की सौगंध खाकर कहती हूं कि तू मेरा ही पुत्र है और मैं तेरी मैया हूं।
श्रीकृष्ण का रंग सांवला क्यों हैं, जैसे भाव वैसा स्पष्टीकरण, श्यामसुन्दर के श्यामरंग से सम्बन्धित विभिन्न भाव इस प्रकार हैं:-
(1) एक बार निकुंजलीला में श्रीराधाजी ने कहा श्यामसुन्दर आप सुन्दर तो हैं किन्तु काले क्यों हैं?’
श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा:-‘राधे मैं तो तेरी शोभा बढ़ाने के लिए ही काला होकर आया हूं।’
(2) गोपियां सब जगह श्रीकृष्ण का दर्शन करतीं है, उनके नेत्रों और हृदय में श्रीकृष्ण ही बसे हैं।
सांवलिया मन भाया रे।
सोहिनी सूरत मोहिनी मूरत, हिरदै बीच समाया रे।
देस में ढूंढ़ा, विदेस में ढूंढ़ा, अंत को अंत न पाया रे॥
दिन-रात श्रीकृष्ण-चर्चा में लगी हुई गोपियों में से एक दिन एक गोपी ने पूछा:- ‘नन्दबाबा गोरे, यशोदाजी गोरी, दाऊजी गोरे, घर भर में सभी गोरे हैं, पर हमारे श्यामसुन्दर ही सांवरे कैसे हो गए?’
इस पर दूसरी गोपी ने उत्तर दिया:- ‘बहिन क्या तू इतना भी नहीं जानती, सुन,
कजरारी अंखियन में बस्यो रहत दिन रात।
पीतम प्यारो है सखी, तातें सांवर गात॥
कितना अद्भुत श्रीकृष्णप्रेम है गोपी का, गोपी की कजरारी आंखों में केवल श्रीकृष्ण ही बसते हैं, जगत में उसकी आंखें किसी और को देखती ही नहीं, इसलिए गोपियों की आंखों में लगे काजल से उनके प्रीतम स्यामसुन्दर सांवले हो गए हैं।
(3) भगवान श्रीकृष्ण जब कौरवों और पांडवों में संधि कराने के लिए हस्तिनापुर गए तो दुर्योधन श्रीकृष्ण का अपमान करने के लिए पूछता है:- ‘तुम नंद-यशोदा के पुत्र हो फिर काले क्यों हो?’
श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा:- ‘कालोऽस्मि लोकक्षयकृतप्रवृत्त: अर्थात् ‘मैं गोरा था किन्तु तेरा काल होने के कारण काला होकर आया हूँ।’
(4) ज्ञानेश्वरजी ने अपने गीता भाष्य में लिखा है कि दूर से तो श्रीकृष्ण का श्रीअंग भक्तों को श्याम लगता है किन्तु समीप जाने पर मालूम पड़ता है कि वह अत्यन्त प्रकाशमय है।
(5) एकनाथजी का मत है कि लोभ का रंग पीला है, क्रोध का रंग लाल है, काम का रंग काला है। मनुष्य के हृदय में काम रहता है इसलिए कलेजा काला होता है।
जो श्रीकृष्ण का ध्यान करता है, प्रेम से श्रीकृष्ण की सेवा करता है उसका हृदय धीरे-धीरे उजला हो जाता है।
भगवान उसके हृदय के कालेपन को खींच लेते हैं और अपने श्रीअंग में रखते हैं; इसलिए वे ‘स्यामल गात’ हैं।
यह सांवरा रंग ऐसा है कि इसमें डूबते चले जाओ तो मन उज्जवल होता चला जाता है।
संसार और इसके भोग बहुत सुन्दर और उज्जवल दीखते है पर इसमें डूबते ही हृदय मलिन, काला हो जाता है। बलिहारी वा प्रेम की गति नही समझे कोय। ज्यों-ज्यों डूबै स्याम रंग त्यों-त्यों उज्जवल होय॥

Due to being dark in color like a new cloud, Shri Krishna is called Neelmani, Sanvara, Shyamsundar, Shyam, Sanwaliya Seth and Ghanshyam.
Yashodaji was surprised to see the dark complexioned Shri Krishna. When Vrajrajnandini Yashoda saw the child lying next to her in the Sutikagriha, she started thinking, is this child beautiful? Its body parts are made of sapphire, lips of Raktaragami (Ruby) and nails of the color of Diamond or Topaz which is similar to pomegranate seeds.
But this is not possible; Because the gem is hard; This baby is very soft and delicate.
It seems that the Creator has created it from flowers, as if its limbs were created from Neelkamal, its lips from Bandhuka flowers, the soles of its hands and feet from Japakusums and its nails from Mallika flowers, that is why they call Shri Krishna ‘Neelmani’. ‘She used to call.
Gore Nand Jashoda Gori, tu kat syamal sing:- When Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain on his little finger for seven days to protect the people of Vraj and the cows from the wrath of Lord Indra, everyone was happy that because of Kanhaiya, Vraj, the people of Vraj and the cows were saved. But many people started doubting that ‘Is this Nandji’s son or some big god?’
Vrajvasi gathered in the courtyard of Nand Mahal, one said: – ‘This is not the son of Nand Baba.’
The second resident of Vraj said: – ‘Have you understood this now, I have had this doubt since his birth, Nandababa is fair, Nandrani Yashoda is fair, but why is Kanhaiya black, has Nandababa brought someone else’s son? ‘
Everyone requested Nandaraiji, Maharaj, please tell me the truth, is this Kanhaiya your son?
Nand Baba folded his hands and said, I swear on my cows. That Kanhaiya is my son.
At that time Shri Krishna was playing in Yashodaji’s lap, when Yashodaji heard the talk of Vrajvasi, he jokingly asked Shri Krishna: – ‘Son, whose son are you?’
Shri Krishna said angrily:- ‘I am your son and you are my mother.’
The mother called Kanhaiya and said, Son, everyone is doubting that I and Nandababa are white, then how did you become black?
Shri Krishna said, ‘Mother, it is your fault, I was born at twelve o’clock on a dark night. I started waking you up, but you did not wake up, so I kept wallowing in darkness till morning, darkness clung to me; That’s why I became black.’
Surdasji has depicted this doubt arising in the childlike mind of Shri Krishna with great detail:-
Mother Mohai Dau has irritated me a lot. Mossou says, take care of yourself, when will you go to Jasumati?
What should I do because of this pain, I don’t want to play, Who is your mother and who is your father? Gore Nand Jashoda Gori, why do you sing so much?
This is a very popular verse of Surdasji, the meaning of this verse is: – Elder brother Baldau was a proud man, he used to tease Shri Krishna sometimes on his dark complexion. One day Kanhaiya started complaining to mother about Baldau and said: Mother, Dau teases me a lot in front of the cowherds, he tells me that Yashoda mother has bought you.
Who are your parents, because Nandababa is fair and mother Yashoda is also fair skinned, but how come you are of dark complexion, if you were their son then you too should be fair.
When Dau says this, the cowherds pinch me and make fun of me, make me dance and smile, what should I do mother, this is why I don’t even go to play, yet you run to kill me, Dau never does anything. She says.
Hearing the angry words of Shri Krishna, Mother Yashoda explains to Kanhaiya that Baldau has been a gossip and a sly person since childhood.
When Shri Krishna did not agree even after listening to Mother’s words, then Yashodaji said, Kanhaiya, I swear on the cows that you are my son and I am your mother.
Why is Shri Krishna’s dark complexion, the explanation is as per the emotion, various emotions related to the dark complexion of Shyamsundar are as follows:-
(1) Once in Nikunjaleela, Shri Radhaji said, Shyamsundar, you are beautiful but why are you black?’
Shri Krishna said:- ‘Radhe, I have come black only to enhance your beauty.’
(2) Gopis see Shri Krishna everywhere, Shri Krishna resides in their eyes and hearts.
I like my dark complexion.
Sohini Surat Mohini Murt, Hirdai Bich Samaya Re. I have sought in the country, I have sought abroad, but I have not found the end.
One day, one of the gopis who were engaged in discussing Shri Krishna day and night asked: ‘Nandababa is fair, Yashodaji is fair, Dauji is fair, everyone in the house is fair, but how did our Shyamsundar become dark?’
On this the second Gopi replied:- ‘Sister, don’t you know this much, listen,
Kajrari resides in Ankhian day and night. My dear friend, I sing sweet songs.
How amazing is the love of Shri Krishna of Gopi, only Shri Krishna resides in the dark eyes of Gopi, his eyes do not see anyone else in the world, that is why due to the kajal applied in the eyes of the Gopis, their beloved has become dark and beautiful.
(3) When Lord Shri Krishna went to Hastinapur to make a treaty between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, Duryodhana insulted Shri Krishna by asking: – ‘You are the son of Nand-Yashoda, then why are you black?’
Shri Krishna said:- ‘Kalosmi lokakshaykritpravrittah i.e. ‘I was fair but due to your age, I have come black.’
(4) Dnyaneshwarji has written in his Gita Bhashya that from a distance, the body parts of Shri Krishna appear dark to the devotees, but when they go closer, they find that they are extremely bright.
(5) Eknathji is of the opinion that the color of greed is yellow, the color of anger is red, the color of lust is black. There is lust in a person’s heart, that is why the heart is black.
One who meditates on Shri Krishna and serves Shri Krishna with love, his heart gradually becomes bright.
God takes away the blackness of his heart and keeps it in His body; That’s why they are ‘Syamal Gaat’.
This dark color is such that if you keep immersing yourself in it, your mind becomes brighter. The world and its pleasures look very beautiful and bright, but as soon as one gets immersed in it, the heart becomes dirty and black. No one understands the sacrifice or the speed of love. As the sea sinks, its colors become brighter.
