सूर्य पुत्री कालिंदी हीं यमुना देवी थीं। जब ब्रज में श्रीकृष्ण रास रचाते थे, तो यमुना यानी कालिंदी भी गोते खाती थी, और श्रीकृष्ण के माधुर्य में नृत्य किया करती थी।
जब श्रीकृष्ण को अक्रूर जी मथुरा ले गए, तब उनका विरह सहन नहीं कर पाने में एक गोपी, यमुना अर्थात कालिंदी भी थी।जो अपना बहाव मोड़कर वह द्वारावती चली गयी।
एक बार कृष्ण और अर्जुन जंगल में साथ जा रहे थे। अर्जुन शिकार खलते-खेलते थक गये थे। अब वे प्यास लगने पर यमुनाजी के किनारे गये । भगवान श्रीकृष्ण और अर्जुन दोनों ने यमुनाजी में हाथ-पैर धोकर उनका निर्मल जल पिया और देखा कि एक परम सुन्दरी कन्या वहाँ तपस्या कर रही है ।
कृष्ण ने अर्जुन से कहा- अर्जुन! जाओ, पता करो की ये तप करती देवी कौन हैं? और किसका ध्यान कर रही है?
अर्जुन उसके पास गये पूछे— ‘देवी! तुम कौन हो ? किसकी पुत्री हो ? कहाँ से आयी हो ? और क्या करना चाहती हो ?
उस सुंदर युवती ने कहा- मेरा नाम कालिंदी है। ‘मैं भगवान सूर्यदेव की पुत्री हूँ। मैं श्रेष्ठतम भगवान कृष्ण को पति के रूप में प्राप्त करना चाहती हूँ और इसीलिये यह कठोर तपस्या कर रही हूँ ।मैं भगवान के आलावा और किसी को अपना पति नहीं बना सकती। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण मुझ पर प्रसन्न हों । यमुना जल में मेरे पिता सूर्य ने मेरे लिये एक भवन भी बनवा दिया है। मैं उसी में रहती हूँ। जब तक भगवान का दर्शन नहीं होगा, मैं यहीं रहूँगी’ ।
अर्जुन ने जाकर भगवान श्रीकृष्ण से सारी बातें कहीं। वे तो पहले से ही यह सब कुछ जानते थे, अब उन्होंने कालिदी के पास जाकर कहा, “तुम ब्रज में थी! यहां कैसे?”
कालिंदी ने कहा, “यह विरह मुझसे सहा नहीं गया प्रभु। इसीलिए मैं यहां आईं हूँ। आप मुझे स्वीकार्य करें।”
श्री कृष्ण ने उसे अपने रथ पर बैठा लिया और धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर के पास ले आये।
कुछ दिनों के बाद भगवान श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुन की अनुमति एवं अन्य सम्बन्धियों का अनुमोदन प्राप्त करके सात्यकि आदि के साथ द्वारका लौट आये।
वहाँ आकर उन्होंने विवाह के योग्य ऋतु और ज्यौतिष-शास्त्र के अनुसार प्रशंसित पवित्र लग्न में कालिन्दीजी का पाणिग्रहण किया। इससे उनके स्वजन-सम्बन्धियों को परम मंगल और परमानन्द की प्राप्ति हुई ।
कालिंदी कृष्ण की अष्ट मुख्य भार्याओं में छठी भार्या है।

Surya’s daughter Kalindi was Yamuna Devi. When Shri Krishna used to perform Raas in Braj, Yamuna i.e. Kalindi also used to take a dip and dance in the melody of Shri Krishna.
When Akrur ji took Shri Krishna to Mathura, then unable to bear his separation, there was also a Gopi, Yamuna i.e. Kalindi. She changed her flow and went to Dwaravati.
Once Krishna and Arjun were going together in the forest. Arjun was tired of hunting. Now when he felt thirsty, he went to the banks of Yamunaji. Lord Shri Krishna and Arjun both washed their hands and feet in Yamuna river and drank its pure water and saw a very beautiful girl doing penance there.
Krishna said to Arjun- Arjun! Go, find out who is this penance goddess? Who else are you meditating on?
Arjun went to her and asked – ‘Devi! Who are you ? Whose daughter are you? Where did you come from? What else do you want to do?
That beautiful girl said- My name is Kalindi. ‘I am the daughter of Lord Suryadev. I want to have the best Lord Krishna as my husband and that is why I am doing this rigorous penance. I cannot make anyone other than God my husband. May Lord Shri Krishna be pleased with me. My father Surya has also built a building for me in Yamuna water. I live there. I will stay here until I see God.
Arjun went and told everything to Lord Krishna. He already knew all this, now he went to Kalidi and said, “You were in Braj! How come here?”
Kalindi said, “Lord, I could not bear this separation. That is why I have come here. Please accept me.”
Shri Krishna made him sit on his chariot and brought him to Dharmaraja Yudhishthir.
After a few days, Lord Krishna returned to Dwarka along with Satyaki etc. after getting the permission of Arjun and the approval of other relatives.
Coming there, he got married to Kalindiji in the season suitable for marriage and in the sacred ascendant praised by astrology. Due to this, his relatives attained supreme happiness and bliss.
Kalindi is the sixth daughter among the eight main daughters of Krishna.
