Shri Surya Chalisa

Om Namo Bhagavate Suryadevaya
The Sun (Surya) is considered the soul of the entire universe and the fundamental force behind the movement of all creation.
Surya provides light, life-energy, warmth, and power to the entire world.
In the Vedas (ancient sacred scriptures), Surya is described as the giver of long life, health, inner strength, honor, fame, knowledge, and spiritual illumination. He is the guide of the universe, the controller of nature’s balance, and the source of life energy.
One very special quality of the Sun is that its rays are germ-destroying and disease-reducing. Sun worship is believed to be beneficial for various health problems such as bone diseases, eye disorders, skin problems, and heart issues.
In Jyotish Shastra (Vedic astrology), Surya is called Grahadhiraj, meaning King of all planets, because the Sun is the center of the solar system.
To receive the blessings of Lord Surya, devotees are advised to recite the Surya Chalisa daily and offer water from a copper vessel (tambe ka lota) to the rising Sun.

Doha
Meditate upon the golden-bodied Lord Surya,
Adorned with earrings shaped like Makara (mythical sea creature) and a garland of pearls,
Seated in the lotus posture, holding conch and discus.
Chaupai
Victory to Savita, victory to Divakar,
The thousand-rayed Sun who removes darkness.
Bhanu, Patang, Marichi, Bhaskar,
Savita, Hansa, Surya, and Vibhakar.
Vivasvan, Aditya, Vikartan,
Martand, Hari-form, and Virochan.
In the sky he shines like a jewel,
The Vedas praise him as Hiranyagarbha (the golden cosmic womb).
Sages repeatedly praise the radiant Sun,
And become filled with joy and devotion.
With Aruna as his charioteer,
He rides the chariot pulled by seven horses.
The glory of his solar sphere is unique,
All beings bow to his divine brilliance.
His horses are swift and powerful,
Even Indra (king of gods) feels humbled seeing them.
Those who chant the twelve names of Surya with devotion
And bow their head twelve times,
Receive the four goals of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha)
And their sorrows and poverty disappear.
Such is the miracle of Surya’s salutation,
It is filled with the grace of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
Those who worship Surya with a focused mind
Gain Ashta Siddhi (eight spiritual powers) and Nava Nidhi (nine treasures).
By chanting his twelve names
The sins of thousands of lifetimes are removed.
The Sun protects every part of the body,
His divine energy surrounds the devotee.
He removes darkness from the world
And fills it with new light and joy.
I bow again and again to that radiant Sun
Who removes the suffering caused by planetary afflictions.
Blessed are you, O divine Sun,
Worshipped by gods, sages, and humans alike.
Those who worship you with devotion
Become free from worldly confusion and illusion.
Doha
Whoever sings this Surya Chalisa with love and devotion every day
Receives happiness, prosperity, and fulfillment in life.
