Glory of Gopi Bhava
Lord Krishna is eternally indebted to the Gopis. He Himself declared this principle:
“Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamyaham.”
As people surrender to Me, I reciprocate with them in the same way.
This means that a devotee receives results according to their intention and the type of devotion they offer.
Whether devotion is with desire, without desire, peaceful, servant-like, parental, or friendly, God fulfills each devotee accordingly.
However, in the case of the Gopis, this principle does not fully apply. There are three main reasons.
The Gopis have no personal desires. So Krishna has nothing to give them.
Their only desire is Krishna’s happiness. When Krishna tries to fulfill this, He Himself becomes even happier, which increases His debt.
Their love is complete and exclusive. They have surrendered everything only to Krishna. But Krishna’s love is spread among many devotees. So the Gopis’ love is pure and undivided, while Krishna’s love is distributed.
Because of this, Krishna says:
O Gopis, you have broken the chains of worldly life which even great yogis cannot break.
Your union with Me is pure and flawless.
Even if I try for eternity to repay your love, service, and sacrifice, I will not be able to do so.
I am forever your debtor. Only your love can free Me from this debt, but still I remain indebted to you.
Therefore, a devotee on the path of love should dedicate every action of body, mind, and speech to Krishna’s happiness.
Whenever difficult situations arise, one should accept them as Krishna’s will and experience inner joy.
Gradually, such a devotee reaches one-pointed love and begins to understand Krishna’s heart.
Krishna tells Arjuna:
The Gopis are My helpers, My teachers, My students, My companions, My everything.
O Arjuna, what are the Gopis not to Me. They are everything.
Only the Gopis truly understand My greatness, My service, My devotion, and the deepest feelings of My heart. No one else does.
“गोपीभाव की महिमा”
भगवान श्री कृष्ण गोपियों के नित्य ऋणी हैं, उन्होंने अपना यह सिद्धात घोषित किया है:-
“ये यथा माँ प्रपधन्ते तांस्तथै भजाम्यहम।“
अर्थात जो मुझे जैसे भजते है उन्हें मैं वैसे ही भजता हूँ। इसका यह तात्पर्य समझा जाता है कि भक्त जिस प्रकार से और जिस परिमाण के फल को दृष्टि में रखकर भजन करता है, भगवान उसको उसी प्रकार और उसी परिमाण में फल देकर उसका भजन करते हैं।
सकाम, निष्काम शांत, दास्य, वात्सल्य, सख्य, आदि कि जिस प्रकार की कामना, भावना, भक्त की होती है, भगवान उसे वही वस्तु प्रदान करते हैं। परन्तु गोपियों के सम्बन्ध में भगवान के इस सिद्धात वाक्य कि रक्षा नहीं हो सकी इसके प्रधान तीन कारण है-
01 गोपी के कोई भी कामना नहीं है। अतएव श्रीकृष्ण उन्हें क्या दें।
2 गोपी की कामना है केवल श्रीकृष्णसुख की, श्रीकृष्ण इस कामना की पूर्ति करने जाते हैं तो उनको स्वयं अधिक सुखी होना पडता है। अतः इस दान से ऋण और भी बढ़ता है।
3 जहाँ गोपियों ने सर्व त्याग करके केवल श्री कृष्ण के प्रति ही अपने को समर्पित कर दिया है, वहाँ श्रीकृष्ण का अपना चित्त बहुत जगह बहुत से प्रेमियों के प्रति प्रेम युक्त है अतएव गोपी प्रेम अनन्य और अखंड है कृष्ण प्रेम विभक्त और खंडित है।
इसी से गोपी के भजन का बदला उसी रूप में श्रीकृष्ण उसे नहीं दे सकते, और इसी से अपनी असमर्थता प्रकट करते हुए वे कहते हैं, “गोपियों तुमने मेरे लिए घर की उन बेडियों को तोड़ डाला है, जिन्हें बड़े-बड़े योगी-यति भी नहीं तोड़ पाते, मुझसे तुम्हारा यह मिलन, यह आत्मिक संयोग सर्वथा निर्मल और सर्वथा निर्दोष है। यदि मैं अमर शरीर से, अमर जीवन से, अनंत काल तक, तुम्हारे प्रेम, सेवा और त्याग का बदला चुकाना चाहूँ, तो भी नहीं चुका सकता। मैं सदा तुम्हारा ऋणी हूँ तुम अपने सौम्य स्वभाव से ही, प्रेम से ही, मुझे उऋण कर सकती हो परन्तु मैं तो तुम्हारा ऋणी ही हूँ।
इसलिए प्रेममार्गी भक्त को चाहिये कि वह अपनी समझ से तन, मन, वचन से होने वाली प्रत्येक चेष्टा को श्रीकृष्ण सुख के लिए ही करे, जब-जब मन में प्रतिकूल स्थिति प्राप्त हो, तब-तब उसे श्रीकृष्ण कि सुखेच्छाजनित स्थिति समझकर परमसुख का अनुभव करे, यों करते-करते जब प्रेमी भक्त केवल श्रीकृष्णसुख-काम अनन्यता पर पहुँच जाता है, तब श्रीकृष्ण के मन की बात भी उसे मालूम होने लगती है गोपियों के श्रीकृष्णानुकुल जीवन में यह प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण है।
इसलिए भगवान अर्जुन से कहते हैं, “गोपियाँ, मेरी सहायिका, मेरी गुरु, शिष्या, भोग्या, बान्धव स्त्री हैं। अर्जुन ये गोपियाँ मेरी क्या नहीं हैं ? सबकुछ हैं मेरी महिमा को, मेरी सेवा को, मेरी श्रद्धा को, और मेरे मन के भीतरी भावों को गोपियाँ ही जानती हैं दूसरा कोई नहीं जानता।”
