Recognizing the Guru at the Threshold of the Heart. हृदय की चौखट पर गुरु की पहचान
A Guru is not chosen. The relationship with a Guru is not of the mind or intellect, but of the heart. There is no way—and there never will be—to recognize a true Guru through logic or thought.
How can a blind person know whether the one standing before him has eyes or not?
How can a sleeping person know whether the one sitting nearby is awake? There is no way.
However, through meditation practice, when the mind becomes one with the breath, it begins to perceive the subtle waves of the heart. These waves carry you naturally toward the true Guru.
Therefore, the connection with a Guru is not of thoughts, calculations, or reasoning—it is a connection of the heart’s feeling.
It is a relationship of true love. The heart does not operate through logic. The heart takes a leap; it does not calculate. It carries a certain experience, a certain fragrance. Such is the relationship with a true Guru.
If you wish to understand deeply, it is not the disciple who chooses the Guru—the Guru chooses the disciple. The Guru chooses first; only then does a wave arise in your heart.
The Guru surrounds you. He closes all the paths through which you could escape. He breaks all the bridges you have crossed. He destroys all the ladders you have climbed. He shatters all your webs of logic.
The day you feel that you made a mistake in choosing a Guru, the first thing to understand is that you may not have fully lived the qualities of a true disciple. Reflect deeply: Have you truly followed everything the Guru has said? Can you honestly say that you have surrendered completely, with total devotion, and practiced meditation daily with sincerity? Have you followed his guidance one hundred percent?
The one who walks one hundred percent on the path comes to know the true Guru—because liberation lies in total commitment. The Guru is only an instrument through which such complete surrender becomes possible. Do not overvalue the instrument itself.
A Guru cannot give you truth—otherwise, one Guru would have filled the entire world with truth. A Guru cannot give you truth or peace. Truth cannot be given or taken.
The Guru is merely a medium—a luminous presence—by whose company it becomes easier for you to enter a state of total surrender. The Guru is a guide, but truth must be experienced by oneself.
Therefore, through dedication to meditation, by going beyond body, mind, and intellect, and by recognizing the inner power within the breath, one comes to truly know the Guru. Only then does one experience peace, and human life becomes fulfilled.

हृदय की चौखट पर गुरु की पहचान
गुरु चुना नहीं जाता। गुरु का संबंध मन, बुद्धि के पार हृदय का संबंध है। सच्चे गुरु को मन के तर्क या विचारों से जानने का कोई उपाय ही नहीं है और न कभी होगा। अंधा कैसे जानेगा कि दूसरा आदमी जो सामने खड़ा है, उसके पास आंख है या नहीं? सोया हुआ आदमी कैसे जानेगा कि जो पास बैठा है, वह जागा है या नहीं? कोई उपाय नहीं है। लेकिन, ध्यान अभ्यास से मन जब स्वांसों के साथ एकाकार होता है तो हृदय के भाव की तरंग पकड़ लेती है और तुम्हें सच्चे गुरु के पास बहा ले जाती है। इसलिए गुरु से संबंध मन के विचार का नहीं, हिसाब का नहीं, गणित का नहीं, हृदय के भाव का है।
यह सच्चे प्रेम का संबंध है। हृदय के पास तर्क नहीं होता है। हृदय छलांग भरता है, गणित नहीं बिठाता है। हृदय की एक अनुभूति होती है, एक सुगंध होती है। ऐसा ही सच्चे गुरु का संबंध है। अगर तुम ठीक से समझना चाहो तो शिष्य गुरु को नहीं चुनता, गुरु शिष्य को चुनता है। गुरु पहले चुन लेता है, तभी तुम्हारे हृदय में तरंग उठती है। गुरु तुम्हें घेर लेता है। तुम्हारे भागने के सब उपाय बंद कर देता है। तुम्हारे सारे सेतु जिनसे तुम होकर आए हो, तोड़ देता है। तुम्हारी सारी सीढ़ियां जिनसे तुम चढ़ कर आए हो, गिरा देता है। तुम्हारे सारे तर्कजाल छिन्न-भिन्न कर देता है।
जिस दिन तुमको लगे कि गुरु चुनने में चुक हो गई तो उस दिन पहली बात यही समझना कि मैंने शिष्यत्व का पूरा गुणधर्म नहीं निभाया और चिंतन करना कि क्या मैंने वह सब पूरा किया है जो गुरु ने कहा है? क्या मैं यह कह सकता हूं कि मैंने समग्रभाव से समर्पण किया है और सच्ची श्रद्धा से हररोज ध्यान अभ्यास किया है? जो गुरु ने कहा था, उस पर मैं पूरा-पूरा चला हूं, सौ प्रतिशत? जो सौ प्रतिशत चलता है, वह सच्चे गुरु को जान लेता है क्योंकि सौ प्रतिशत चलने से मुक्ति है। गुरु तो निमित्त मात्र है जिसके सहारे सौ प्रतिशत समर्पण हो जाता है। तुम निमित्त को ज्यादा मूल्य मत दो।
गुरु तुम्हें सत्य नहीं दे सकता वरना एक गुरु ने ही सारे जगत को सत्य से भर दिया होता। गुरु तुम्हें सत्य और शांति कुछ भी नहीं दे सकता। सत्य दिया-लिया नहीं जाता। गुरु तो एक निमित्त है, एक प्रकाशवान निमित्त है, जिसके पास बैठ कर तुम्हें पूरे समर्पण की भाव-दशा बनाने में आसानी होती है। गुरु मार्गदर्शक है लेकिन, सत्य को स्वयं अनुभव करना होता है। इसलिए ध्यान अभ्यास के प्रति प्रतिबद्धता से शरीर, मन और बुद्धि के पार स्वांसों के भीतर की शक्ति को पहचान कर ही सच्चे गुरु को जाना जाता है। तभी शांति के अनुभव से मनुष्य जीवन सफल होता है।
