[भज] निताई-गौर राधेश्याम [जप] हरेकृष्ण हरेराम
धनी तीर्थराम को प्रेम और वेश्याओं का उद्धार
रे कन्दर्प करं कदर्थयसि किं कोदण्डटगांरितै:।
रे रे कोकिल कोमलै: कलरवै: किं त्वं वृथा जल्पसि।
मुग्धे स्निग्धविदग्धमुग्धमधुरैर्लोलै: कटाक्षैरलं
चेतश्चुम्बितचन्द्रचूडचरणध्यानामृतं वर्तते।।
जिसने प्रेमासव का पान कर लिया है, जो उसकी मस्ती में संसार के सभी पदार्थों को भूला हुआ है, उसके सामने ये संसार के सभी सुन्दर, सुखद और चमकीले पदार्थ तुच्छ हैं। वह उन पदार्थों की ओर दृष्टि तक नहीं डालता, जिनके लिये विषयी मनुष्य अपना सर्वस्व अर्पण करने के लिये तत्पर रहते हैं। जिस हृदय में कामारि के भी पूजनीय प्रभु निवास करते हैं, उस हृदय में काम के लिये स्थान कहाँ? क्या रवि और रजनी एक स्थान पर रह सकते हैं? दीपक लेकर यदि आप अन्धकार को खोजने चलें तो उसका पता कहीं मिल सकता है? इसीलिये कहा है- ‘जहाँ काम है, वहाँ राम नहीं। और जहाँ राम हैं, वहाँ काम नहीं।’
जो जोड़ा से ठिठुरा हो उसके सम्मुख उसकी इच्छा विरुद्ध भी धधकती हुई अग्नि पहुँच जाय तो उद्योग न करने पर भी उसका जाड़ा छूट जायगा। सांभर की झील में कंकड़ी, पत्थर, हड्डी जो भी वस्तु गिर जायगी, वह नमक बन जायगी। प्रेमी से चाहे प्रेम से सम्बन्ध करो या ईर्ष्या-द्वेष से, कल्याण आपका अवश्य ही होगा। भूल से भी लोहा पारस से छुआ दिया जाय तो उसके सुवर्ण होने में कोई सन्देह नहीं।
महाप्रभु जब दक्षिण के समस्त तीर्थों में भ्रमण करते करते श्रीरंगम आ रहे थे, तब रास्ते में अक्षयवट नामक तीर्थ में ठहरे। रास्ते में महाप्रभु का जीवननिर्वाह भिक्षा पर ही होता था। किसी दिन भिक्षा मिल जाती थी, किसी दिन नहीं भी मिलती थी, कृष्णदास भट्टाचार्य प्रभु को भिक्षा बनाकर खिलाते थे। एक दिन भिक्षा का कहीं संयोग ही न लगा। तीर्थ में उपोषण का भी विधान है, अत: उस दिन महाप्रभु ने कुछ भी नहीं दिया। एक निर्जन स्थान में शिव जी के समीप वे कीर्तनानन्द में मग्न हुए-
कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हे।’
कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हे।।
कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण रक्ष माम्।

इस महामन्त्र को जोर जोर से उच्चारण कर रहे थे। रास्ते के श्रम से उनके श्रीमुख पर कुछ श्रीमजन्य थकावट के चिह्न प्रतीत होते थे। उनके समस्त अंगों से एक प्रकार का तेज सा निकल रहा था।
वे प्रेमानन्द में मग्न हुए उच्च स्वर से नाम संकीर्तन में मग्न थे। इतने में ही तीर्थराम नाम का एक बहुत बड़ा धनी वहाँ सहसा आ पहुँचा। उसे अपने धन का गर्व था, युवावस्था ने उसे कर्तव्यशून्य बना दिया था, यौवन के मद में वह अपने आ पहुँचा। उसे अपने धन का गर्व था, युवावस्था ने उसे कर्तव्यशून्य बना दिया था, यौवन के मद में वह अपने धर्म को तिलांजलि दे चुका था। खाना-पीना और मौज उड़ाना यही उसने अपने जीवन का ध्येय बना रखा था। सुन्दर से सुन्दर भोज्य पदार्थों को खाना और मनोरम से मनोरम ललनाओं के साथ समय बिताना यही उसने जीवन का चरम सुख समझ लिया था। उसके साथ दो अत्यन्त सुन्दरी वेश्याएँ थीं। उनमें से एक का नाम सत्याबाई और दूसरी का नाम लक्ष्मीबाई था। उनके साथ हास-परिहास करते करते वह शिवालय के समीप आ पहुँचा। वहाँ उसने अपनी कान्ति से दिशाओं को आलोकित करते हुए प्रेमावतार श्रीचैतन्य को देखा। सुवर्ण के समान शरीर का रंग था।
कमल के समान विकसित मुखारविन्द पर हठात चित्त को अपनी ओर आकर्षित करने वाली दो बड़ी-बड़ी आँखें थीं। उसकी समझ में ही नहीं आया कि इतनी अतुलनीय रूपराशि से युक्त यह पुरुष यहाँ जंगल में अकेला एक कपड़ा ओढ़े क्यों पड़ा है। अपने सन्देह को मिटाने के लिये उसने धीरे से कहा-‘कौन है।’
किन्तु महाप्रभु तो अपने कीर्तनानन्द में मग्न थे, उन्हें किसी का क्या पता। वे पूर्ववत जोरों से कीर्तन करते रहे। उसकी उत्सुकता और भी बढ़ी। उसने अब के जरा जोर से कहा- ‘आप कौन हैं और यहाँ एकान्त में क्यों पड़े हैं ?’
कृपामय श्रीचैतन्य ने अब के उसकी बात का उत्तर दिया- ‘भाई ! हम गृहत्यागी संन्यासी हैं, अपने प्यारे की तलाश में घर से निकले हैं। एकान्त ही हमारा आश्रय है, वैराग्य ही हमारा बन्धु है, संकीर्तन ही हमारा एकमात्र कर्तव्य है, इसीलिये हम यहाँ एकान्त में पड़े अपने प्यारे के नामों का उच्चारण कर रहे हैं।’ इतना कहकर महाप्रभु फिर पूर्ववत कीर्तन करने लगे।
इस उत्तर को पाकर तीर्थराम को सन्तुष्ट हो जाना चाहिये था और महाप्रभु को छोड़कर वेश्याओं के साथ अन्यत्र चले जाना चाहिये था। किन्तु उसका तो प्रभु द्वारा उद्धार होता था, उसके मन में ईर्ष्या का अंकुर उत्पन्न हुआ, वह सोचने लगा- ‘यह भी कोई अजीब आदमी है, विधाता ने इसे इतना सौन्दर्य दिया है, चढ़ती जवानी है, किसी उच्च कुल का प्रतीत होता है, फिर भी ऐसी वैराग्य की बातें कर रहा हूँ। मालूम होता है इसे सत्यबाई और लक्ष्मीबाई के समान रूप-लावण्युक्त कोई ललना नहीं मिली है, यदि एक बार इसने ऐसी अनुपम सुन्दरी के दर्शन के किये होते तो वह संन्यास और वैराग्य सभी को भूल जाता।’
इन बातों को सोचते सोचते वह अपनी दोनों संगनियों से बोला- ‘मालूम होता है, इसने अभी संसार का सुख नहीं भोगा है, तभी यह ऐसी बढ़-चढ़कर बातें करता है।’ एक साथ ही दोनों जल्दी से बोल उठी- ‘अजी, चलो भी किसकी बातें करने लगे। ये सब कामदेव के दण्डित व्यक्ति हैं, जहाँ इन्होंने ललनाओं के रूप की निन्दा की, वहीं कामदेव ने खप्पर हाथ में देकर इन्हें द्वार द्वारका भिखारी बना दिया।’
तीर्थराम ने कहा- ‘नहीं, ऐसी बात नहीं। इसके चेहरे में आकर्षण है। कोई वैराग्यवान साधु मालूम पड़ता है।’ इस पर उसकी बात का प्रतिवाद करती हुई लक्ष्मीबाई बोली- ‘हाँ, बिना मिले के तो सभी त्यागी-वैरागी हैं। खाने को न मिला तो कह दिया एकादशी व्रत है। ‘नारि मुई गृह संपति नासी। मूंड़ मुड़ाइ होहिं संन्यासी।।’ मुझ-जैसी कोई इनके पल्ले पड़ जाय तब हम देखें कि कैसे त्यागी बने रहते हैं?
तीर्थराम ने उन दोनों को उत्तेजना देते हुए कहा- ‘अच्छा, देखें तुम्हारी बात। यदि इसे अपने चंगुल में फंसा लो तो जो चाहो वह इनाम तुम्हें दें।’
उन दोनों को अपने रुप-लावण्य का गर्व था। वे मत्त सिंहनी की भाँति महाप्रभु की ओर चलीं। तीर्थराम पास ही छिपकर उनकी सब बातों को देखता रहा।
महाप्रभु एक करवट से लेटे हुए श्रीकृष्ण कीर्तन कर रहे थे। गोविन्द और कृष्णदास कुछ दूरी पर थे। वे वेश्याएँ वहाँ जाकर बैठ गयीं और अपने हाव-भाव-कटाक्षों से प्रभु की अनन्यता को भंग करने की चेष्टा करने लगीं। किन्तु प्रभु को पता भी नहीं कि कौन आया है, वे अपने नशे में चूर थे, उन्हें दीन-दुनिया किसी का भी होश नहीं था। उन्हें वहाँ बैठे जब बहुत देर हो गयी तब लक्ष्मीबाई ने सम्पूर्ण साहस इकट्ठा करके कहा- ‘साधुबाबा ! मैं आपसे कुछ पूछना चाहती हूँ।’
पतितपावन प्रभु तो इसके लिये तैयार ही बैठे थे। वे जल्दी से उठ बैठे और उन पर करुणाभरी विकार नाशिनी दृष्टि डालकर बड़े ही मधुर स्वर से प्रेम के साथ बोले- ‘माता जी ! इस दीन हीन संतान के लिये क्या आज्ञा है, मैं आपकी किस आज्ञा का पालन करूँ?’ उनकी दृष्टि में और उनके इन शब्दों में पता नहीं क्या जादू था। वे दोनों अवाक रह गयीं। काटो तो बदन में लोहू नहीं! उनकी वाणी बंद हो गयी, धैर्य छूट गया और पश्चात्ताप की अग्नि ने उनके हृदय में एक प्रकार की ज्वाला पैदा कर दी। वे आत्मग्लानि से अभिभूत होकर जल्दी से वहाँ से उठ खड़ी हुईं।
तीर्थराम इन बातों को सुन रहा था। प्रभु के संकीर्तन के श्रवणमात्र से ही उसका धैर्य टूट गया था। अब रहा सहा धैर्य इस असम्भव घटना ने तोड़ दिया। परमसुन्दरी दो युवती एकान्त में जिससे प्रेमालाप करने की प्रार्थना करने की प्रार्थना करें और वह उन्हें माता कहकर सम्बोधन करे, वह कोई मनुष्य नहीं, ईश्वर है। यह संसारी प्राणी का काम नहीं, ये तो देवताओं के भी देवताओं का काम है। यह सोचते सोचते वह महाप्रभु के पादपद्मों में गिर पड़ा और बड़े ही जोर से चीत्कार मारकर कहने लगा- ‘हा प्रभो ! मुझ पापी का उद्धार करो, प्रभो ! मुझे अपने चरणों में शरण दो।’
महाप्रभु ने उसे उठाकर छाती से लगाया और प्रेम में विह्वल होकर जोर-जोर से नृत्य करते हुए संकीर्तन करने लगे। वे अविरलभाव से प्रेमाश्रु विमोचन करते हुए नृत्य करने लगे। भावावेश में उनके शरीर का वस्त्र जमीन पर गिर पड़ा। इससे उनके दीप्तिमान श्रीअंगों से तेज की किरणें फूट फूटकर उस नीरव स्थान को आलोकित करने लगीं। वे वेश्याएँ भी इस अदभुत चमत्कार को देखकर भावावेश में अपने को भूल गयीं और भगवान के नाम का कीर्तन करती हुई नृत्य करने लगीं!
तीर्थराम ने प्रभु के श्रीचरणों को जोर से पकड़ लिया और बार बार चिल्ला चिल्लाकर वह कहने लगा- ‘प्रभो ! मुझ पापी का भी किसी प्रकार उद्धार हो सकेगा? दयामय ! मेरे पापों का प्रायश्चित्त किसी तरह हो सकता है क्या?’
पतितपावन प्रभु ने उसे उठाकर अपने गले से लगाया और कहा- ‘तीर्थराम ! तुम पापी नहीं, पुण्यात्मा हो, तुम्हारे श्रीअंग के स्पर्श से मैं पावन हुआ। तुम भाग्यवान हो, प्रभु के कृपामात्र हो, अपने मन से ग्लानि निकाल दो। करुणामय श्रीहरि सबका भला करते हैं। जो उनकी शरण में पहुँच जाता है उसके पाप रहते ही नहीं। रूई के ढेर में जैसे अग्नि पड़ने से भस्म हो जाती है उसी प्रकार वे भस्म हो जाते हैं।’ महाप्रभु के इन आदेशमय वाक्यों को सुनकर तीर्थराम को कुछ धैर्य हुआ। उसने अपने को महाप्रभु के श्रीचरणों में सर्वतोभावेन समर्पित कर दिया। महाप्रभु ने उसे हरि-नाम-मन्त्र का उपदेश दिया और वह भी तिलक-कण्ठी धारण करके शुद्ध वैष्णव बन गया। दोनों वेश्याओं ने भी अपने पापों का प्रायश्चित किया और वे निरन्तर हरि-नाम स्मरण करने लगीं। तीर्थराम की स्त्री का नाम कमलकुमारी देवी था, अपने पति की ऐसी दशा देखकर उसे परमानन्द हुआ। वह सती-साध्वी पतिव्रता पत्नी अपने पति चरणों का अनुगमन करने वाली थी। उसने अत्यन्त ही दीन भाव से प्रभु के पादपपद्मों में प्रणाम किया और गदद कण्ठ से प्रार्थना की- प्रभो ! इस पापिनी का उद्धार कीजिये। मुझे भी अपने चरणों की शरण प्रदान कीजिये, जिससे संसार सागर से मैं भी पति के चरणों का अनुगमन कर सकूँ।’
महाप्रभु की आज्ञा से तीर्थराम ने अपनी पत्नी को हरि-नाम मन्त्र का उपदेश दिया। वह भी अपना सारा धन कंगालों को बांटकर तीर्थराम के साथ हरिनाम संकीर्तन करने लगी।
महाप्रभु सात दिन तक बटेश्वर में ठहरे। वहाँ रहकर वे धनीराम को उपदेश देते थे। प्रभु ने उससे कहा- ‘बहुत ग्रन्थों के मायाजाल में मत पड़ना। भगवान केवल विश्वास से ही प्राप्त हो सकते हैं। सम्पूर्ण जगत के वैभव को तृण-समान समझना और निरन्तर भगवन्नाम संकीर्तन में लगे रहना यही वेद शास्त्रों का सार है।’ इस प्रकार तीर्थराम और उन दो सुन्दरी वेश्याओं को प्रेम दान करके महाप्रभु श्रीरंगम में चले गये थे और श्रीरंग में ही चातुर्मास्य किया। जब वर्षा समाप्त हो गयी, तब प्रभु ने श्रीरंगम से आगे चलने का विचार किया।

O Kandarpa, why are you disgracing your hands with your sword? Oh, oh, oh, cuckoo, why are you talking in vain with your soft chirping voices? Fascinated by the greasy, burnt, fascinated, sweet, rolling glances The mind is nectar of meditation on the kissed moon-crowned feet.
All the beautiful, pleasant and shiny things of the world are insignificant in front of the one who has taken the drink of Premasav, who has forgotten all the things of the world in his ecstasy. He doesn’t even look at those things for which sensual people are ready to sacrifice their all. Where is the place for work in the heart in which even the revered Lord of Kamari resides? Can Ravi and Rajni stay at the same place? If you go in search of darkness with a lamp, where can you find its address? That is why it is said- ‘Where there is work, there is no Ram. And where Ram is there, there is no work.’
If a flaming fire reaches in front of the one who is chilly from the couple, even against his will, then even if he does not do industry, his winter will be left. Whatever pebble, stone, bone falls in the lake of Sambhar, it will become salt. Whether you relate to your lover with love or jealousy-hatred, your welfare will definitely happen. If iron is touched by Paras even by mistake, then there is no doubt that it will become gold.
When Mahaprabhu was coming to Srirangam while visiting all the pilgrimages in the south, then on the way he stayed at a pilgrimage named Akshayavat. On the way, Mahaprabhu used to live only on alms. Some days alms was available, some days it was not available, Krishnadas Bhattacharya used to make alms and feed the Lord. One day there was no coincidence of alms. There is also a law of nutrition in pilgrimage, so Mahaprabhu did not give anything on that day. He got engrossed in Kirtananand near Lord Shiva in a deserted place.

He was chanting this great mantra loudly. Due to the labor of the way, there seemed to be some signs of tiredness on his face. A kind of radiance was emanating from all his organs.
He was engrossed in chanting the name with a loud voice, engrossed in love. Meanwhile, a very rich man named Tirtharam suddenly came there. He was proud of his wealth, youth had made him duty-free, he reached his own in the head of youth. He was proud of his wealth, youth had made him duty free, he had given up his religion in the name of youth. Eating, drinking and having fun was the aim of his life. Eating the most beautiful food items and spending time with the most delectable Lallanas, he considered this to be the ultimate happiness of life. He had two very beautiful prostitutes with him. One of them was named Satyabai and the other was Lakshmibai. Joking and joking with them, he reached near the Shivalaya. There he saw Premavatara Sri Chaitanya illuminating the directions with his radiance. The color of the body was like gold.
On the mouth developed like a lotus, there were two big eyes that instantly attracted the mind. He did not understand why this man with such an incomparable form is lying here alone in the forest wearing only a cloth. To dispel his doubt, he said softly – ‘Who is it?’
But Mahaprabhu was engrossed in his kirtanand, how could he know about anyone. They kept chanting loudly as before. His curiosity increased even more. He said a little louder now – ‘Who are you and why are you lying here in solitude?’
Gracious Sri Chaitanya now answered his words – ‘Brother! We are grihatyagi sannyasins, we have left home in search of our beloved. Solitude is our refuge, quietness is our friend, sankirtan is our only duty, that is why we are chanting the names of our beloved lying here in solitude.’ Having said this, Mahaprabhu again started chanting as before.
Tirtharam should have been satisfied after getting this answer and should have left Mahaprabhu and gone elsewhere with the prostitutes. But he was saved by the Lord, a sprout of jealousy arose in his mind, he started thinking – ‘He is also a strange man, the creator has given him so much beauty, he is young, he seems to be from a high family, Still I am talking about such disinterest. It seems that he has not got any beauty like Satyabai and Lakshmibai, if he had once seen such a unique beauty, he would have forgotten all renunciation and disinterest.
Thinking these things, he said to his two companions- ‘It seems, he has not yet enjoyed the happiness of the world, that’s why he talks like this.’ What did they start talking about? All these are the punished persons of Kamadeva, where they condemned the form of Lallanas, whereas Kamadeva made them beggars door-to-door by handing them Khapar.
Tirtharam said – ‘No, it is not like that. There is charm in its face. He seems to be a recluse monk.’ Lakshmibai countering his point on this said – ‘Yes, without meeting everyone is a renunciate. When food was not available, it was said that it is Ekadashi fast. ‘Nari Mui Griha Sampati Nasi. Sanyasis who have shaved their heads..’ If someone like me falls in their hands, then we will see how they remain renunciates.
Tirtharam encouraged both of them and said- ‘Well, let’s see what you say. If you trap it in your clutches, then give whatever reward you want.
Both of them were proud of their beauty. She walked towards Mahaprabhu like a lioness. Tirtharam kept watching all their talks hiding nearby.
Mahaprabhu was doing Shri Krishna Kirtan while lying on one side. Govind and Krishnadas were at some distance. Those prostitutes sat there and started trying to disturb the exclusivity of the Lord with their expressions and sarcasm. But the Lord didn’t even know who had come, he was intoxicated, he was not conscious of anyone in the world. When it was too late for him to sit there, Lakshmibai gathered all her courage and said- ‘Sadhubaba! I want to ask you something.’
The Purifier Prabhu was sitting ready for this. He quickly got up and looking at her with a compassionate look on her, spoke with love in a very sweet voice – ‘Mother! What command do you have for this poor child, what command should I obey?’ There was no magic in his eyes and in his words. Both of them were speechless. If you bite, there is no blood in the body! His speech stopped, patience left and the fire of repentance created a kind of flame in his heart. Overwhelmed with self-pity, she quickly stood up from there.
Tirtharam was listening to these things. His patience was broken just by listening to the sankirtan of the Lord. Now this impossible incident has broken my patience. Paramsundari two girls in solitude pray to pray for courtship and he addresses them as mother, he is not a man, he is God. This is not the work of a worldly creature, it is the work of the gods as well. Thinking of this, he fell at the lotus feet of Mahaprabhu and started shouting very loudly – ‘ Oh Lord! Save me the sinner, Lord! Give me refuge in your feet.
Mahaprabhu picked him up and hugged him and being overwhelmed with love started singing sankirtan while dancing loudly. He started dancing while releasing tears of love incessantly. His body’s clothes fell on the ground in emotion. Due to this, the rays of light burst forth from his shining limbs and started illuminating that silent place. Those prostitutes also forgot themselves in emotion after seeing this wonderful miracle and started dancing chanting the name of God!
Tirtharam held the Lord’s feet tightly and started shouting again and again – ‘Lord! Can I, a sinner, also be saved in any way? Merciful! Can there be atonement for my sins in any way?’
The Purifier Lord picked him up and hugged him and said – ‘Tirtharam! You are not a sinner, you are a virtuous soul, I became pure by the touch of your body. You are lucky, you are blessed by God, remove the guilt from your mind. Compassionate Sri Hari does good to everyone. The one who reaches his refuge, his sins do not remain at all. They are reduced to ashes just as a pile of cotton is consumed by fire.’ Tirtharam felt some patience after hearing these commanding sentences of Mahaprabhu. He completely surrendered himself at the feet of Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu preached Hari-nama-mantra to him and he too became a pure Vaishnava by wearing tilak-kanthi. Both the prostitutes also atone for their sins and they started chanting Hari-Naam continuously. The name of Tirtharama’s wife was Kamalkumari Devi, she was overjoyed to see such a condition of her husband. That sati-saadhvi pativrata wife was about to follow in the footsteps of her husband. He bowed down at the lotus feet of the Lord with great humility and prayed with a deep voice – Lord! Save this sinner. Give me the shelter of your feet too, so that I too can follow the feet of my husband from the ocean of the world.’
By the order of Mahaprabhu, Tirtharama preached the Hari-nama mantra to his wife. She also distributed all her wealth to the poor and started chanting Harinam with Tirtharam.
Mahaprabhu stayed in Bateshwar for seven days. Staying there, he used to preach to Dhaniram. The Lord said to him- ‘Don’t fall in the trap of many books. God can be attained only through faith. This is the essence of the Vedas, considering the glory of the whole world to be like a tree and constantly engaged in the chanting of the Lord’s name. ‘ In this way, Mahaprabhu went to Srirangam after giving love to Tirtharam and those two beautiful prostitutes and performed Chaturmasya in Srirangam itself. When the rain stopped, the Lord thought of moving on from Srirangam.
