श्रीविष्णुप्रिया-परिणय

रूपसम्पन्नमग्राम्यं प्रेमप्रायं प्रियंवदम्।
कुलीनमनुकूलं च कलत्रं कुत्र लभ्यते।।

बहू के बिना घर सूना-ही-सूना लगता है, इसका अनुभव वही माता कर सकती है, जिसके घर में एक ही पुत्र हो और उसकी सर्वगुणसम्पन्ना पुत्र-वधू परलोकगामिनी हो चुकी हो, उसे चारों ओर से अपना ही घर उजड़ा हुआ-सा दिखायी पड़ता है, घर की लिपी-पुती स्वच्छ दीवालें उसे काटने को दौड़ती हैं। एकलौते पुत्र को देखते ही माता की छाती फटने लगती है और जब-जब पुत्र को स्वयं अपने हाथों से कुछ काम करते देखती है, तभी-तब अश्रुओं से अपनी छाती को भिगोती है। पुत्र-वधू से रहित युवक पुत्र को देखकर माता को महान कष्ट होता है। शचीमाता की भी ऐसी ही दशा थी, जब से लक्ष्मीदेवी परलोकगामिनी हुई हैं, तभी से माता का चित्त उदास रहता है। वे निमाई को देखते ही रोने लगती हैं। निमाई मन-ही-मन सब समझते हैं, किन्तु कुछ कहते नहीं हैं, चुप ही रहते हैं, कहें भी तो क्या कहें?

माता को सदा यही चिन्ता रहती है कि निमाई के योग्य कोई सुन्दरी और गुणवती कुलीन कन्या मिल जाय तो मैं जल्दी-से-जल्दी उसका दूसरा विवाह करके अपने घर को पहले की भाँति हरा-भरा, आनन्द उल्लासयुक्त देख सकूँ। वे गंगा-किनारे जब-जब जातीं तभी-तब वहाँ स्नान करने के निमित्त आयी हुई अपनी सजातीय सयानी कन्याओं के ऊपर एक हलकी-सी दृष्टि डालतीं और फिर निगाह नीची कर लेतीं। इस प्रकार वे रोज ही अपनी नवीन पुत्र-वधू की उन कन्याओं में खोज किया करतीं।

उन्हीं कन्याओं के बीच में वे एक परम सुन्दरी और सुशीला कन्या को भी देखतीं, वह कन्या प्रायः शचीदेवी को रोज ही मिलती। सुबह, शाम, दोपहर को जब भी शची माता स्नान के निमित्त आतीं तभी उस कन्या को घाट पर देखतीं, कभी तो वह स्नान करती होती, कभी देव-पूजन और कभी-कभी स्नान करके घर को जाती हुई शची देवी को मिलती। वह कन्या शची माता को जब भी देखती तभी वह बड़ी श्रद्धा-भक्ति के साथ प्रणाम करती।

शचीदेवी भी प्रसन्न होकर उसे आशीर्वाद देतीं- ‘भगवान की कृपा से मेरी बेटी को योग्य पति प्राप्त हो।’ कन्या इस आशीर्वाद को सुनती और लज्जितभाव से नीची निगाह करके चली जाती।

एक दिन शचीमाता ने उस कन्या को बुलाकर पूछा- ‘बेटी! तेरा क्या नाम है?’

लजाते हुए नीचे की ओर दृष्टि करते हुए धीरे से कन्या ने कहा- ‘विष्णुप्रिया’।

माता ने प्रसन्नता प्रकट करते हुए कहा- ‘अहा, ‘विष्णुप्रिया’ कैसा सुन्दर नाम है? जैसा सुन्दर शील-स्वभाव है उसी के अनुरूप सुन्दर नाम भी।’ फिर पूछा- ‘बेटी! तेरे पिता का क्या नाम है’? विष्णुप्रिया यह सुनकर चुपचाप ही खड़ी रहीं। उन्होंने इस प्रश्न का कुछ भी उत्तर नहीं दिया। तब शचीमाता ने पुचकारते हुए कहा- ‘बता दे बेटी! बताने में क्या हर्ज है, क्या नाम है तेरे पिता का?’

लजाते हुए और शरीर को कुछ टेढ़ा करते हुए धीरे से विष्णुप्रिया ने कहा- ‘राजपण्डित!’ माता ने जल्दी से कहा- पं. सनातन मिश्र की लड़की है तू? तब बताती क्यों नहीं है? राजपण्डित की पुत्री भी राजपुत्री होती है, तभी नहीं बताती थी, क्यों यही बात है न?’

विष्णुप्रिया लजाती हुई चुपचाप खड़ी रही। माता ने उससे और भी दो-चार बातें पूछकर उसे विदा किया। विष्णुप्रिया का शील-स्वभाव और सौन्दर्य शचीमाता की दृष्टि में गड़-सा गया था। वे बार-बार यही सोचने लगीं- ‘क्या ही अच्छा हो यदि यह लड़की मेरी पुत्र-वधू बन जाय? वे रोज घाट पर विष्णुप्रिया को देखतीं और उससे दो-चार बातें जरूर करतीं।

विष्णुप्रिया का अद्भुत रूप-लावण्य, उनकी अत्यन्त कोमल प्रकृति, प्रशंसनीय शील-स्वभाव और अनुपम विष्णु-भक्ति की वे मन-ही-मन बार-बार सराहना करतीं। इसलिये वे उनके प्रति अधिकाधिक प्रेम प्रदर्शित करने लगीं। विष्णुप्रिया के मन में भी इनके प्रति भक्ति बढ़ने लगी।

शचीमाता बार-बार सोचतीं- ‘क्या हर्ज है, एक बार सनातन मिश्र से पुछवाऊँ तो सही, बहुत करेंगे वे अस्वीकार ही कर देंगे।’ फिर सोचतीं- ‘वे राजपण्डित हैं, धनाढ्य हैं, सब जगह उनकी भारी प्रतिष्ठा है, वे एक विधवा के पुत्र के साथ अपनी पुत्री का सम्बन्ध क्यों करने लगे।’ यही सोचकर कुछ डर-सी जातीं और उनका साहस नहीं होता।

एक दिन उन्होंने साहस करके काशीनाथ मिश्र नाम के घटक को बुलाया और उनसे बोलीं- ‘मिश्रजी! तुमने सनातन मिश्र की लड़की देखी है?’

घटक ने कहा- ‘लड़की मैंने देखी है, बड़ी ही सुन्दर, सुशील तथा गुणवती है। निमाई के वह सर्वथा योग्य है। मैं समझता हूँ तुम उस लड़की को अपनी पुत्र-वधू बनाकर जरूर प्रसन्न होगी।’

माता ने कहा- ‘यह तो तुम ठीक कहते हो, किन्तु वे धनाढ्य हैं, राजपण्डित हैं। बहुत सम्भव है वे इस सम्बन्ध को न स्वीकार करें। हमारी तो तुम दशा देखते ही हो, वैसे लड़की को अन्न-वस्त्र का तो घाटा न होगा।’

घटक ने जोर देकर कहा- ‘माता जी! तुम कैसे बात करती हो? भला, निमाई-जैसे योग्य, प्रतिष्ठित पण्डित को जमाई बनाने में कौन अपना सौभाग्य न समझेगा? मैं समझता हूँ, वे इसे सहर्ष स्वीकार कर लेंगे। मैं आज ही उनके यहाँ जाऊँगा और शाम को ही तुम्हें उत्तर दे जाऊँगा।’ यह कहकर काशीनाथ मिश्र माता को प्रणाम करके चले गये।

इधर पण्डित सनातन मिश्र बहुत दिनों से चाह रहे थे कि विष्णुप्रिया का सम्बन्ध निमाई पण्डित के साथ हो जाता तो बहुत अच्छा होता। किन्तु वे भी मन में कुछ संकोच करते थे कि निमाई आजकल नामी पण्डित समझे जाते हैं।

इस बीस बरस की ही अल्पावस्था में उन्होंने इतनी भारी ख्याति प्राप्त कर ली है, बहुत सम्भव है वे इस सम्बन्ध को स्वीकार न करें। यदि हमारी प्रार्थना पर भी उन्होंने इस सम्बन्ध को स्वीकार न किया तो इसमें हमारा बहुत अपमान होगा। प्रायः धनी लोग अपने मान का बहुत ध्यान रखते हैं, इसी भय से उन्होंने इच्छा रहने पर भी आज तक यह बात किसी पर प्रकट नहीं की थी।

सनातन मिश्र के हृदय में इसी प्रकार के विचार उठ ही रहे थे कि उसी बीच काशीनाथ घटक उनके समीप आ पहुँचे। घटक को देखकर उन्होंने इनका सम्मान किया, बैठने को आसन दिया और आने का कारण जानना चाहा। काशीनाथ घटक ने आदि से अन्त तक सब बातें कहकर अन्त में कहा- ‘शचीमाता ने मुझे बुलाकर स्वयं कहा है। इस बात को मैं अपनी ओर से कहता हूँ कि आपको अपनी पुत्री के लिये इससे अच्छा वर दूसरी जगह कठिनता से मिलेगा।’

प्रसन्नता प्रकट करते हुए सनातन मिश्र ने कहा- ‘निमाई पण्डित कोई अप्रसिद्ध मनुष्य तो हैं ही नहीं। देशभर में उनका यशोगान हो रहा है। उन्हें जामाता बनाने में मैं अपना परम सौभग्य समझता हूँ मेरी भी चिरकाल से यही इच्छा थी, किन्तु इसी संकोच से आज तक किसी पर प्रकट नहीं की कि वे सम्भव है स्वीकार न करें।’

घटक ने कहा- ‘इस बात की आप तनिक भी चिन्ता न करें, शची देवी जो कह देंगी वही होगा, निमाई उनकी इच्छा के विरुद्ध कोई काम नहीं कर सकते।’

सनातन मिश्र के घर में जब स्त्रियों ने यह बात सुनी तो उनकी प्रसन्नता का ठिकाना न रहा। कोई कहने लगी- ‘लड़की का भाग्य खुल गया।’ कोई-कोई विष्णुप्रिया के ही सामने कहने लगी- ‘इतने दिन का इसका गंगा-स्नान और विष्णु-पूजा आज सफल हुई, साक्षात विष्णु के ही समान इसे वर मिल गया।’ ये सब बातें सुनकर विष्णुप्रिया लजाती हुई उठकर दूसरी ओर चली गयीं। स्त्रियाँ और भी भाँति-भाँति की बातें करने लगीं।

राजपण्डित सनातन मिश्र की स्वीकृति लेकर घटक महाशय सीधे शचीमाता के समीप पहुँचे और उन्हें यह शुभ संवाद सुना दिया। सुनकर शचीमाता को बड़ी प्रसन्नता हुई और उसी समय विवाह की तिथि आदि भी निश्चय करा दी।

सनातन मिश्र के यहाँ तिथि आदि की सभी बातें पक्की करके काशीनाथ घटक आ ही रहे थे कि रास्ते में अकस्मात उनकी निमाई पण्डित से भेंट हो गयी।

निमाई ने उन्हें आलिंगन करते हुए कहा- ‘किधर से आ रहे हैं?’ आप तो सदा घटया ही करते हैं। कहिये किसे घटकर आये हैं?

हँसते हुए घटक ने कहा- ‘घटाकर तो नहीं आये हैं बढ़ाने की ही फ़िक्र है, तुम्हें एक से दो करना चाहते हैं। बताओ, क्या सलाह है?’ कुछ आश्चर्य-सा प्रकट करते हुए निमाई पण्डित ने कहा- ‘मैं आपकी बात का मतलब नहीं समझा। कैसा बढ़ाना, स्पष्ट बताइये?’

जरा आवाज को बढ़ाते हुए जोर देकर घटक ने कहा- ‘राजपण्डित सनातन मिश्र की पुत्री के साथ तुम्हारे परिणय की बातें पक्की करके आ रहा हूँ। बताओ तुम्हें मंजूर है न?’ बड़े जोर से हँसते हुए इन्होंने कहा- ‘हहाहा! हमारा विवाह? और राजपण्डित की पुत्री के साथ! हमें तो कुछ भी पता नहीं’ यह कहते-कहते ये हँसते हुए घर चले गये।

घटक को इनकी सूखी हँसी में कुछ सन्देह हुआ। सनातन मिश्र के यहाँ भी खबर पहुँच गयी। सुनते ही घर भर में सुस्ती छा गयी। सनातन मिश्र ने कहा- ‘जिस बात की शंका थी, वही हुई। मैं पहले ही जानता था, निमाई स्वतन्त्र प्रकृति के पुरुष हैं, वे भला, इस प्रकार सम्बन्ध को कब मंजूर करने वाले थे! हुआ तो कुछ भी नहीं, उलटी मेरी सब लोगों में हँसी हुई। सबको पता चल गया है कि लड़की का विवाह निमाई पण्डित के साथ होगा। यदि न हो सका तो मेरे लिये बड़ी लज्जा की बात है।’ यह सोचकर उन्होंने उसी समय काशीनाथ घटक को बुलाया और अपनी चिन्ता का कारण बताकर शीघ्र ही शचीमाता से इसके सम्बन्ध में निश्चित उत्तर ले आने की प्रार्थना की।

घटक महाशय उसी समय शचीमाता के समीप गये और राजपण्डित की चिन्ता का सभी वृत्तान्त कह सुनाया। सब कुछ सुनकर शची माता ने कहा- ‘निमाई मेरी बात को कभी टालता नहीं है, इसीलिये मैंने उससे इस सम्बन्ध में कुछ भी पूछ-ताछ नहीं की। आज वह पाठशाला से आवेगा तो मैं उससे पूछ लूँगी। मेरा ऐसा विश्वास है, वह मेरी बात को टाल नहीं सकता। कल मैं तुम्हें इसका ठीक-ठीक उत्तर दूँगी।’ माता का ऐसा उत्तर सुनकर घटक अपने घर को चले गये।

इधर जब शाम को पाठशाला से पढ़ाकर निमाई घर आये तब माता ने इधर-उधर की दो-चार बातें करके बड़े प्रेम से कहा- ‘निमाई बेटा! मैं एक बात पूछना चाहती हूँ। क्या सनातन मिश्रवाला सम्बन्ध तुझे मंजूर नहीं है? लड़की तो बड़ी सुशील ओर चतुर है। मैं उसे रोज गंगा जी पर देखती हूँ।’ कुछ लजाते हुए निमाई ने कहा- ‘मैं क्या जानूँ, जो तुम्हें अच्छा लगे वह करो।’ माता को यह उत्तर सुनकर सन्तोष हुआ। इन्होंने अपनी माता के सन्तोषार्थ स्वयं एक मनुष्य के द्वारा सनातन के यहाँ विवाह की तैयारी करने की खबर भेज दी। इस खबर के पाते ही सनातन मिश्र के घर में फिर से दुगुना आनन्द छा गया और वे धूम-धाम के साथ पुत्री के विवाह की तैयारियाँ करने लगे।

इधर निमाई पण्डित के पास इतना द्रव्य नहीं था कि वे राजपण्डित की पुत्री के साथ खूब समारोह के साथ विवाह कर सकें। इसके लिये वे कुछ चिन्तित-से हुए। धीरे-धीरे इस बात की खबर इनके सभी विद्यार्थी तथा स्नेहियों को लग गयी। विद्यार्थी बड़े प्रसन्न हुए और आ-आकर कहने लगे- ‘गुरुजी! ज्योंनार की मिठाइयाँ तो खूब खाने को मिलेंगी। सनातन तो राजपण्डित ठहरे। खूब जी खोलकर विवाह करेंगे। बढ़िया-बढ़िया मिठाइयाँ बनावेंगे। खूब आनन्द रहेगा।’ ये सबकी बातें सुनकर हँस देते। उस समय नवद्वीप में बुद्धिमन्त खाँ ही सबसे बड़े जमींदार थे। वे उस समय के एक प्रकार से नवद्वीप के राजा ही समझे जाते। निमाई पण्डित से वे बहुत स्नेह करते थे। इनके विवाह की बात सुनकर वे इनके पास पाठशाला में आये। जिनके चण्डी-मण्डप में ये पढ़ाते थे, वे मुकुन्द संजय भी वहीं बैठे थे। उन्होंने इनका आगत-स्वागत किया। बुद्धिमन्त खाँ ने कहा- ‘पण्डित जी! सुना है आप दूसरा विवाह कर रहे हैं? यह बात कहाँ तक सच है? सुना है अबके राजपण्डित की पुत्री पसंद की है।’

कुछ लजाते हुए इन्होंने कहा- ‘आप जो भी सुनेंगे सब सत्य ही होगा। भला, आपके सामने झूठ बात कहने की किसकी हिम्मत हो सकती है?’

इस उत्तर से प्रसन्न होकर बुद्धिमन्त खाँ ने कहा- ‘तब तो खूब मिठाई खाने को मिलेगी। हाँ, एक प्रार्थना मेरी है, इस विवाह का सम्पूर्ण खर्च मेरे जिम्मे रहा।’ बीच में ही मुकुन्द संजय बोल उठे- ‘वाह साहब! सब आपका ही रहा, हम वैसे ही रहे। कुछ हमें भी तो अवसर दीजिये। अकेले-ही-अकेले आनन्द उठा लेना ठीक नहीं।’

हँसते हुए बुद्धिमन्त खाँ ने जवाब दिया- ‘आप भी अपनी इच्छा पूर्ण कर लें। कुछ भिखमंगे ब्राह्मण का विवाह थोड़े ही है। राजपण्डित की पुत्री के साथ शादी है। राजकुमार की ही भाँति खूब ठाट-बाट से विवाह करेंगे। आप जितना भी चाहें खर्च कर लें।’ इस प्रकार विवाह के सम्पूर्ण खर्च का भार तो इन दोनों धनिकों ने अपने ऊपर ले लिया। अब निमाई इस बात से तो निश्चिन्त हो गये, फिर भी उन्हें बहुत-सा काम स्वयं ही करना था। उसे लिये वे विद्यार्थियों की सहायता से स्वयं ही सब काम करने लगे।

सभी बड़े-बड़े पण्डितों को निन्त्रित किया गया। विद्वन्मण्डली में से ऐसा एक भी पण्डित नहीं बचने पाया जिसके पास निमन्त्रण न पहुँचा हो। इधर पूर्वोक्त दोनों धनाढ्यों ने विवाह के लिये गाने-नाचने का, आतिशबाजी-फुलवारी का, अच्छे-अच्छे बाजों का तथा और भी सजावट के बहुत-से सामानों का भलीभाँति प्रबन्ध किया। नियत तिथि के दिन अपने स्नेही बहुत-से पण्डित, विद्यार्थियों तथा अन्य गण्यमान्य सज्जनों के साथ बरात सजाकर निमाई पण्डित विवाह के लिये चले। वे आगे-आगे पालकी में जा रहे थे। दोनों ओर चमर ढुर रहे थे। सबसे आगे भाँति-भाँति के बाजे बज रहे थे। इस प्रकार खूब समारोह के साथ वे सनातन मिश्र के द्वार पर जा पहुँचे। मिश्रजी ने सब लोगों का यथोचित खूब सम्मान किया। सभी के ठहरने, खाने-पीने और मनोरंजन का उन्होंने बहुत ही उत्तम प्रबन्ध कर रखा था। उनके स्वागत-सत्कार से सभी लोग अत्यन्त ही प्रसन्न हुए।

गोधूलि के शुभ लग्न में निमाई पण्डित ने विष्णुप्रिया का पाणिग्रहण किया। ब्राह्मणों ने स्वस्त्ययन पढ़ा, वेदज्ञों ने हवन कराया। इस प्रकार विवाह के सभी लौकिक तथा वैदिक कृत्य बड़ी ही उत्तमता के साथ समाप्त हुए। विष्णुप्रिया ने पतिदेव के चरणों में आत्मसमर्पण किया और निमाई ने उन्हें वामांग करके स्वीकार किया। सनातन मिश्र ने बहुत-सा धन तथा बहुमूल्य वस्त्राभूषण निमाई के लिये भेंट में दिये। इस सब कार्यों के हो जाने पर विवाह के सब कार्य समाप्त किये गये।

दूसरे दिन सनातन मिश्र ने सभी विद्वान पण्डितों की सभा की। उनकी योग्यतानुसार यथोचित पूजा की और द्रव्यादि देकर खूब सत्कार किया। तीसरे दिन विष्णुप्रिया के साथ दोला (पालकी) में चढ़कर निमाई अपने घर आये। चिरकाल से जिसे अपनी पुत्र-वधू बनाने के लिये माता उत्सुक थी, आज उसे ही पुत्र के साथ अपने घर में आयी देखकर माता की प्रसन्नता का ठिकाना नहीं रहा। वह उस युगल जोड़ी को देखकर मन-ही-मन अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हो रही थी।

घर में घुसते समय चौखट में उँगली पिच जाने के कारण विष्णुप्रिया के कुछ खून निकल आया था। इसे अपशकुन समझकर उनका चित्त पहले तो कुछ दुःखी हुआ था, किन्तु थोड़े दिनों में वे इस बात को भूल गयी थीं। जब निमाई संन्यास लेकर चले गये, तब उन्हें यह घटना याद आयी थी और वह उसे स्मरण करके दुःखी हुई थीं। इस प्रकार विष्णुप्रिया को पाकर निमाई अत्यन्त ही प्रसन्न हुए और विष्णुप्रिया भी अपने सर्वगुणसम्पन्न पति को पाकर परम आह्लादित हुईं।

He was handsome, rustic, almost loving and sweet-speaking. Where can one find a wife who is noble and suitable

Without a daughter-in-law, the house seems to be deserted, it can be experienced only by the mother who has only one son in her house and her daughter-in-law, who has all the qualities, has become an alien wife, she sees her own house as ruined from all sides. It happens, the whitewashed clean walls of the house rush to bite it. The mother’s chest starts bursting at the sight of the only son and whenever she sees the son doing some work with his own hands, then only then she wets her chest with tears. Seeing a young son without a wife and son, the mother feels great pain. Sachimata also had a similar condition, ever since Lakshmidevi became the wife of the next world, since then the mother’s mind remains sad. She starts crying on seeing Nimai. Nimai understands everything in his mind, but does not say anything, remains silent, even if he does say what to say?

Mother is always worried that if a beautiful and quality noble girl is found worthy of Nimai, then I can get her second marriage as soon as possible so that my house can be green and full of joy as before. Whenever she used to go to the banks of the Ganges, only then would she cast a light glance at the mature girls who had come there to take a bath, and then lower her gaze. In this way, everyday she used to search for her new son-in-law among those girls.

In the midst of those girls, she would also see an extremely beautiful and soft-spoken girl, that girl would often meet Shachidevi every day. In the morning, evening and afternoon, whenever Shachi Mata used to come for bath, she used to see that girl on the ghat, sometimes she used to take bath, sometimes she used to worship God and sometimes after taking bath she would meet Shachi Devi on her way home. Whenever that girl would see Shachi Mata, she would bow down with great reverence and devotion.

Shachidevi would also be pleased and bless her- ‘May my daughter get a worthy husband by the grace of God.’ The girl listened to this blessing and went away with a low look in shame.

One day Sachimata called that girl and asked – ‘Daughter! What is your name?

While shyly looking down, the girl said softly – ‘Vishnupriya’.

Expressing happiness, the mother said- ‘Aha, what a beautiful name ‘Vishnupriya’ is? As beautiful as one’s modesty is, a beautiful name is also there.’ Then asked – ‘Daughter! What is your father’s name? Vishnupriya stood silently after hearing this. He didn’t answer anything to this question. Then Sachimata called out and said- ‘Tell me daughter! What is the harm in telling, what is the name of your father?

Being shy and bending her body a bit, Vishnupriya said slowly – ‘Rajpundit!’ Mother quickly said – Are you the daughter of Pt. Sanatan Mishra? Then why don’t you tell? Rajpundit’s daughter is also a princess, that’s why she didn’t tell, why is it the same?’

Vishnupriya stood silently shy. The mother sent him away after asking him a few more things. Vishnupriya’s modesty and beauty were buried in the eyes of Sachimata. She started thinking again and again – ‘ What would be good if this girl becomes my son-in-law? She used to see Vishnupriya on the ghat every day and would definitely have a couple of talks with her.

She used to praise Vishnupriya’s wonderful beauty, her very gentle nature, praiseworthy modesty and unique Vishnu-bhakti again and again. That’s why she started showing more and more love towards him. Devotion towards him started increasing in Vishnupriya’s mind as well.

Sachimata used to think again and again- ‘What is the problem, if I ask Sanatan Mishra once, it will be okay, he will reject you.’ Then she would think- ‘He is a scholar, he is rich, he has a great reputation everywhere, he is a widow. Why did you start having a relationship with your daughter’s son?’

One day she courageously called a Ghatak named Kashinath Mishra and said to him – ‘Mishraji! Have you seen Sanatan Mishra’s girl?’

Ghatak said- ‘I have seen the girl, she is very beautiful, gentle and virtuous. He is absolutely worthy of Nimai. I think you will definitely be happy to make that girl your daughter-in-law.

Mother said- ‘You are right in saying this, but he is rich, a Rajpundit. It is very possible that they may not accept this relationship. You see our condition, otherwise there will be no shortage of food and clothes for the girl.

Ghatak insisted- ‘Mother! how do you talk Well, who would not consider it his good fortune to have a worthy, prestigious Pandit like Nimai as his son-in-law? I think they will gladly accept it. I will go to his place today itself and will reply to you in the evening itself.’ Saying this, Kashinath Mishra bowed down to his mother and went away.

On the other hand, Pandit Sanatan Mishra had been wishing for a long time that it would have been better if Vishnupriya had a relationship with Nimai Pandit. But they also had some hesitation in their mind that Nimai is considered to be a famous pundit these days.

In this short span of twenty years, he has achieved such a huge fame, it is very possible that he may not accept this relationship. If they do not accept this relationship even on our request, then we will be greatly insulted in this. Often rich people take great care of their honor, due to this fear, they did not reveal this thing to anyone till today even if they wanted to.

Similar thoughts were rising in Sanatan Mishra’s heart that meanwhile Kashinath Ghatak came near him. Seeing Ghatak, he respected him, gave him a seat and wanted to know the reason for his arrival. Kashinath Ghatak told everything from the beginning to the end and said in the end – ‘ Sachimata herself has called me. I say this on my own behalf that you will hardly find a better groom for your daughter anywhere else.’

Expressing happiness, Sanatan Mishra said – ‘ Nimai Pandit is not an unfamous person at all. He is being praised all over the country. I consider it my great fortune to make him my son-in-law, I too had this desire from time immemorial, but due to this hesitancy, till today I did not reveal it to anyone that they might not accept it.’

Ghatak said- ‘Don’t worry at all about this, whatever Shachi Devi says will happen, Nimai cannot do anything against her wish.’

When the women in Sanatan Mishra’s house heard this, their happiness knew no bounds. Some started saying – ‘The girl’s fate has opened.’ Some started saying in front of Vishnupriya – ‘Her Ganga-bathing and Vishnu-worship for so many days was successful today, she got a groom just like Vishnu.’ Hearing everything, Vishnupriya got up feeling ashamed and went to the other side. The women started talking about different things.

Taking the approval of Rajpundit Sanatan Mishra, Ghatak Mahasaya directly reached near Sachimata and narrated this auspicious dialogue to her. Sachimata was very happy to hear this and at the same time fixed the date of marriage etc.

Kashinath Ghatak was coming to Sanatan Mishra’s place after confirming all the dates etc. that on the way he suddenly met Nimai Pandit.

Nimai hugged him and said- ‘Where are you coming from?’ You always do bad things. Tell me, who has come down?

Laughing Ghatak said- ‘Haven’t come after reducing, only worried about increasing, want to reduce you from one to two. Tell me, what is the advice?’ Expressing some surprise, Nimai Pandit said – ‘I did not understand the meaning of your words. How to increase, tell clearly?

Raising his voice a little, Ghatak said with emphasis – ‘ I am coming after confirming your marriage with the daughter of Rajpandit Sanatan Mishra. Tell me, do you agree?’ Laughing out loud, he said – ‘Hahaha! our marriage? And with Rajpundit’s daughter! We don’t know anything’ saying this, he went home laughing.

Ghatak had some doubt in his dry laughter. The news reached Sanatan Mishra also. As soon as he heard this, there was lethargy in the whole house. Sanatan Mishra said – ‘ Whatever was suspected, happened. I already knew, Nimai is a man of independent nature, well, when was he going to approve such a relationship! Nothing happened, on the contrary, everyone laughed at me. Everyone has come to know that the girl will be married to Nimai Pandit. If it cannot be done then it is a matter of great shame for me.’ Thinking this, he called Kashinath Ghatak at the same time and after telling the reason for his concern, requested Sachimata to bring a definite answer in this regard soon.

At the same time, Ghatak Mahasaya went near Sachimata and narrated all the details of Rajpundit’s concern. Hearing everything, Shachi Mata said- ‘Nimai never avoids my talk, that’s why I did not ask him anything in this regard. If he comes from school today, I will ask him. I have such a belief, he cannot avoid my words. Tomorrow I will give you the correct answer.’ Ghatak went to his home after hearing such an answer from the mother.

Here in the evening, when Nimai came home after teaching from school, the mother after talking here and there said with great love – ‘Nimai son! I want to ask one thing. Do you not accept the relationship of Sanatan Mishra? The girl is very polite and clever. I see him everyday on Ganga ji.’ Nimai said with some shame – ‘What do I know, do whatever you like.’ Mother was satisfied after hearing this answer. For the satisfaction of his mother, he sent the news of a man himself preparing for marriage at Sanatan’s place. On receiving this news, there was double the joy again in the house of Sanatan Mishra and he started making preparations for his daughter’s marriage with great fanfare.

Here, Nimai Pandit did not have enough money to marry Rajpandit’s daughter with a lot of ceremony. For this he became somewhat worried. Gradually all his students and loved ones came to know about this. The students were very happy and started coming and saying – ‘Guruji! You will get to eat a lot of Jyonar sweets. Sanatan should be a Rajpundit. Will marry very openly. Will make wonderful sweets. There will be a lot of fun.’ He used to laugh after listening to everyone’s words. At that time, Buddhimant Khan was the biggest landlord in Navadweep. He would have been considered as the king of Nabadwip in a way at that time. He had great affection for Nimai Pandit. Hearing about his marriage, they came to him in the school. In whose Chandi-Mandap he used to teach, that Mukund Sanjay was also sitting there. He welcomed them. Buddhimant Khan said – ‘Pandit ji! Heard you are getting married again? To what extent is this thing true? I have heard that he has liked the daughter of this Raj Pundit.

Somewhat shyly, he said- ‘Whatever you hear will be true. Well, who can dare to tell a lie in front of you?’

Pleased with this answer, Buddhimant Khan said – ‘Then you will get a lot of sweets to eat. Yes, I have one request, the entire expenses of this marriage were on me.’ In the middle, Mukund Sanjay said – ‘Wah sir! Everything remained yours, we remained the same. At least give us a chance. It is not right to enjoy alone.’

Laughing, Buddhimant Khan replied – ‘You also fulfill your wish. Some beggar Brahmins have few marriages. He is married to the daughter of a Rajpundit. Will marry like a prince with a lot of pomp and show. Spend as much as you want.’ In this way, these two rich men took the burden of the entire wedding expenses upon themselves. Now Nimai was relieved of this fact, yet he had to do a lot of work himself. For that, he himself started doing all the work with the help of the students.

All the big pundits were controlled. There was not even a single pundit left in the Vidwanmandali to whom the invitation did not reach. Here, both the aforesaid rich people made arrangements for singing and dancing, fireworks and flowers, good instruments and many other decorations for the wedding. On the appointed day, Nimai Pandit went for marriage after decorating a procession with many of his friends, students and other dignitaries. They were going ahead in the palanquin. Leather was being worn on both sides. Different instruments were being played in the front. In this way, with great ceremony, he reached the door of Sanatan Mishra. Mishraji respected everyone appropriately. He had made very good arrangements for everyone’s stay, food and entertainment. Everyone was very happy with his welcome.

Nimai Pandit took the water of Vishnupriya in the auspicious time of twilight. The Brahmins recited the Swasthyayan, the Vedgyas performed the Havan. In this way all the cosmic and Vedic functions of marriage ended with great excellence. Vishnupriya surrendered at the feet of husband and Nimai accepted her by begging. Sanatan Mishra gifted a lot of money and valuable clothes for Nimai. After all these works were done, all the works of marriage were finished.

On the second day, Sanatan Mishra held a meeting of all the learned pundits. Worshiped him appropriately according to his ability and honored him a lot by giving him medicines. On the third day Nimai came to his house with Vishnupriya in a dola (palanquin). Mother’s happiness knew no bounds to see the one whom the mother was eager to make as her son-bride since long, today she came to her house with her son. She was very happy seeing that couple.

While entering the house, some blood came out of Vishnupriya due to her finger being stuck in the door frame. Considering this as a bad omen, her mind was a bit sad at first, but in a few days she forgot about it. When Nimai left for sannyas, she remembered this incident and was saddened to remember it. In this way, Nimai was very happy after getting Vishnupriya and Vishnupriya was also very happy to get her husband full of all qualities.
