एक गाँव में एक साधू महाराज रहते थे । साधू महाराज जहाँ भी जाते, नाम जप पर उपदेश देते थे । साधू महाराज की नाम जप पर अगाध श्रृद्धा को देखकर कई लोगों ने उनसें राम नाम की दीक्षा ली । कुछ लोग तो उनके सानिध्य में रहकर ईश्वर का अनुग्रह पाने के लिए उनके शिष्य तक बन गये।
एक बार साधू महाराज शिष्यों को नाम की महिमा सुना रहे थे । तब उन्होंने कहा कि ” अगर श्रृद्धा हो तो राम का नाम जपने मात्र से मनुष्य सभी संकट से पार हो जाता है ।”
यह सुनकर साधू महाराज का एक शिष्य ख़ुशी से उछल पड़ा । उसे तो मानो हर संकट से उबरने का रामबाण मिल गया । वह प्रतिदिन भिक्षा के लिए नदी पार करके दुसरे गाँव जाता था । इसके लिए उसे नाविक को चार आने देने पड़ते थे ।
एक दिन की बात है । साधू महाराज का वह शिष्य भिक्षा के लिए जा रहा था । उस दिन दूर कहीं बारिश हुई थी, जिससे नदी में बाढ़ आई हुई थी । नाविक ने ले जाने से मना कर दिया । तभी शिष्य को गुरूजी का वह उपदेश याद आया – ” राम का नाम जपने मात्र से मनुष्य सभी संकट से पार हो जाता है ।” शिष्य ने सोचा – “ अगर राम नाम से सभी संकटों से पार हुआ जा सकता है तो नदी पार करना कोनसी बड़ी बात है ।” लेकिन फिर भी उसे संदेह हुआ । कहीं डूब गया तो ! उसने पहले गुरूजी से पूछना उचित समझा ।
वह वापस गुरूजी के पास गया बोला – “ गुरूजी ! आज तो नदी में बाढ़ आई हुई है और नाविक ने पार कराने से मना कर दिया । अब क्या करूँ ?”
गुरूजी बोले – “ कुछ नहीं ! आज जल पर निर्वाह कर लेंगे ।” लेकिन जल पर निर्वाह करना शिष्य को मंजूर नहीं था । उसने गुरूजी से फिर पूछा – “ गुरूजी ! आप कहते है, ‘राम नाम जपने मात्र से सभी संकटों से पार हुआ जा सकता है’ क्या राम नाम से नदी भी पार हो सकती है ?”
गुरूजी बोले – “ अवश्य ! श्रृद्धापूर्वक लिया गया राम नाम सभी संकटों से पार कर देता है । इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि नदी पार हो सकती है ।”
फिर क्या था । गुरूजी की बात सुनकर शिष्य फिर से नदी की ओर चल दिया । शिष्य को पक्का विश्वास तो नहीं था कि वह पार हो जायेगा लेकिन फिर भी राम नाम की परीक्षा करने के लिए वह नदी में उतरा । उसने एक बार राम बोला और एक कदम आगे बढ़ा । तो कुछ नहीं हुआ ।
दो बार राम – राम कहा और आगे बढ़ा । फिर भी उसे कोई प्रभाव नहीं दिखा । अब राम – राम बोलते – बोलते वह आगे बढ़ने लगा । पानी उसके गर्दन तक आ गया । अब उसने सोचा कि राम नाम बेकार है – ” ये केवल लोगों को उपदेश देने के लिए है ।” गुरूजी तो झूठ बोलते है । इतने में एक बड़ी लहर आई और उसे बहा ले गई ।
शिष्य बिचारा गोते खाते – खाते किसी तरह किनारे लगा । उसे गुरूजी पर बड़ा गुस्सा आ रहा था । उसने जाकर सारी आपबीती गुरूजी को सुनाई और गालियाँ देने लगा ।
शिष्य बोला – “ अरे डोंगी पाखंडी गुरु ! कोई मरे या जिये तुझे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता । कुछ भी अनाप – शनाप उपदेश बकता रहता है । आज तेरे उपदेश के चक्कर में मैं मरते – मरते बचा । ये ले तेरी कंठी माला, आज मैं तुझे पूरी दुनिया के सामने नंगा करूँगा ।” गुरूजी शांत बैठे मुस्कुरा रहे थे ।
यह देखकर शिष्य गुस्से से लाल हो गया । “ मैं जा रहा हूँ गाँव वालों को तेरी असलियत बताने ।” यह कहते हुए शिष्य फिर से नदी की ओर चल दिया । पीछे – पीछे गुरूजी भी चल दिए । जब नदी किनारे पहुँचे तो नदी उफ़ान पर थी । शिष्य नदी के किनारे पर बैठकर नदी के शांत होने की प्रतीक्षा करने लगा ।
गुरूजी किनारे पर रुके बिना नदी में उतर गये । जैसे ही साधू महाराज नदी में उतरे नदी ने रास्ता दे दिया । यह देखकर शिष्य दंग रह गया । उसे अपनी भूल समझ आ गई । वह पश्चाताप की आग में जलता हुआ नदी में कूद पड़ा । उस समय उसे जीवन की कोई परवाह नहीं थी । ना ही अपनी कोई सुध ही थी । वह दौड़ता हुआ नदी पार कर गया और गुरुदेव के चरणों में गिरकर क्षमा याचना करने लगा । साधू महाराज ने उसे उठाया और गले लगा लिया । जब उसे सुध आई तो उसने पीछे मुड़कर देखा । नदी ज्यो की त्यों बह रही थी ।
उसने आश्चर्यपूर्वक गुरूजी से पूछा – “ गुरूजी ! ये क्या रहस्य है ? जब मैंने राम नाम जपा था तब नदी पार नहीं कर पाया और अब जबकि मैंने कुछ नहीं जपा फिर भी नदी पार हो गई । ऐसा क्यों ?”
गुरूजी बोले – “ वत्स ! सब श्रृद्धा का चमत्कार है । नाम तो श्रृद्धा को साधने का जरिया मात्र है । तुम राम कहो या कृष्ण, उससे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता । अगर श्रृद्धा है तो तुम्हारा कोई भी नाम या विचार तुम्हें संकटों से पार कर सकता है और यदि श्रृद्धा नहीं है तो सारे नाम बेकार है ।”
गुरूजी आगे बोले – “ जब तुम पहली बार नदी पार कर रहे थे । उस समय तुम्हें नाम में श्रृद्धा नहीं, संदेह था । लेकिन अब जब तुमने उसी नाम से मुझे पार होते देखा तो तुम्हे अपनी भूल का अहसास हो गया और तुमने अपने जीवन की परवाह किये बिना समर्पण कर दिया । यही श्रृद्धा है ।”
“ जब श्रेष्ठता से प्रेम, ईश्वर से प्रेम हमारे अंतःकरण में उमड़ पड़े तो समझो श्रृद्धा का प्राकट्य हो चूका है । अब आपका इष्ट नाम सार्थक है । श्रृद्धा और समर्पण के साथ ही नाम की सार्थकता है ।

VERY GOOD MORNING JI
A monk Maharaj lived in a village. Wherever Sadhu Maharaj used to go, he used to preach on chanting the name. Seeing the deep devotion of Sage Maharaj on chanting his name, many people took initiation in the name of Ram from him. Some people even became his disciple to get the grace of God by staying in his company.
Once Sadhu Maharaj was telling the glory of the name to his disciples. Then he said that “If there is faith, then by chanting the name of Rama, a man can overcome all troubles.”
Hearing this, a disciple of Sadhu Maharaj jumped with joy. Believe that he has found a panacea to overcome every crisis. Every day he used to cross the river and go to another village for alms. For this he had to give four annas to the boatman.
Its just matter of one day . That disciple of Sadhu Maharaj was going for alms. That day it had rained somewhere far away, due to which the river was in flood. The boatman refused to take it. That’s why the disciple remembered Guruji’s advice – “Just by chanting the name of Ram, a man overcomes all troubles.” The disciple thought – “If all troubles can be crossed by the name of Ram, then what is the big deal in crossing the river.” But still he doubted. If he drowned somewhere! He thought it appropriate to ask Guruji first.
He went back to Guruji and said – ′′ Guruji! Today the river is in flood and the boatman refused to take it across. What do I do now ?”
Guruji said – “Nothing! Today we will survive on water. But living on water was not acceptable to the disciple. He asked Guruji again – ′′ Guruji! You say, ‘All troubles can be crossed by simply chanting the name of Ram’ Can even a river be crossed by chanting the name of Ram?”
Guruji said – “Of course! The name of Ram taken with devotion overcomes all troubles. There is no doubt that the river can be crossed.
Then what . After listening to Guruji, the disciple again went towards the river. The disciple was not sure that he would cross over but still he entered the river to test the name of Ram. He uttered Ram once and took a step forward. So nothing happened.
Said Ram-Ram twice and went ahead. Still he did not see any effect. Now he started moving forward while saying Ram-Ram. The water came up to his neck. Now he thought that the name Ram is useless – “It is only for preaching to people.” Guruji tells lies. Meanwhile a big wave came and took him away.
The poor disciple somehow found himself on the shore while diving. He was getting very angry on Guruji. He went and narrated all the incidents to Guruji and started abusing him.
The disciple said – ′′ Hey hypocrite teacher! It doesn’t matter to you whether someone lives or dies. Anything goes on preaching indiscriminately. Today I was saved from dying because of your preaching. Take this necklace of yours, today I will strip you naked in front of the whole world. Guruji was sitting quietly smiling.
Seeing this, the disciple turned red with anger. “I am going to tell the villagers your reality.” Saying this the disciple again went towards the river. Guruji also followed behind. When they reached the river bank, the river was in spate. The disciple sat on the bank of the river and waited for the river to calm down.
Guruji went into the river without stopping at the bank. As soon as Sadhu Maharaj entered the river, the river gave way. The disciple was stunned to see this. He understood his mistake. Burning in the fire of repentance, he jumped into the river. At that time he did not care about life. Nor did he have any concern for himself. He crossed the river running and fell at the feet of Gurudev and started apologizing. Sadhu Maharaj picked him up and hugged him. When he came to his senses, he looked back. The river was flowing as it was.
He surprisedly asked Guruji – ′′ Guruji! What is this secret? When I chanted the name of Ram, I could not cross the river and now when I did not chant anything, still the river crossed. Why so ?”
Guruji said – ′′ Vats! Everything is a miracle of faith. The name is just a means to cultivate faith. Whether you say Ram or Krishna, it doesn’t matter. If there is faith then any name or thought of yours can cross you through troubles and if there is no faith then all the names are useless.
Guruji further said – “When you were crossing the river for the first time. At that time you had doubt, not faith in the name. But now when you saw me crossing with the same name, you realized your mistake and surrendered without caring for your life. This is Shraddha.
“When love for excellence, love for God overflows in our hearts, then understand that faith has manifested. Now your favorite name is meaningful. Along with devotion and dedication, there is significance of the name.
