एक बार श्रीकृष्ण और राधा जी निधिवन में रात्रि में सभी गोपियों के साथ हास परिहास कर रहे थे। राधा जी ने श्रीकृष्ण से कहा, में आपसे यह जानना चाहती हूँ कि भक्त कष्ट क्यों पाते हैं ?’
कृष्ण बोले, ‘राधे! सुनो, एक भक्त थे, वो ह्रदय से मेरी भक्ति करते थे। उन्हें लगता था की भगवान की भक्ति करने से उनके जीवन में सुख ही सुख रहेगा लेकिन ऐसा हुआ नहीं।उन्हें भक्ति करते कई साल बीत गए और वो निर्धन होते चले गए। यही नहीं उनके समकालीन लोग उनसे बहुत धनी हो गए और वे सब उन भक्तजन का बड़ा परिहास उड़ाते। भक्त को लगता, ‘उनसे अच्छा तो ये लोग ही जीवन जी रहे हैं इन्हे तो भगवान की भक्ति भी नहीं करनी पड़ती। मैंने भी इतना समय लगा कर देख लिया न तो प्रभु मिले और ना ही जीवन में कुछ सुख आया। अब तो मैं भक्ति भी नहीं छोड़ सकता वरना लोग मुझे और भटका हुआ समझेंगे।’ ऐसा विचार करते-करते उन्होंने ये अनुभव किया कि लगता है मुझे प्रभु कृष्ण की प्रतीति ही नहीं है, मुझे ये कैसे विश्वास हो कि वो सचमुच हैं या नहीं । उस भक्त ने सुन रखा था कि, ‘
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण निधिवन में प्रतिदिन आते हैं और कोई छुप के देख ले तो उसका अहित हो जाता है।’ उसने सोचा अब मेरा क्या अहित होगा ये विचारकर वो साँझ को सबसे आँख बचाकर निधिवन में छुप गया और रात्रि कि बाट जोहने लगा। अब बताओ राधा मैं उन संत जन को कैसे बताऊँ कि यदि सांसारिक इच्छा उनकी शेष रहेगी तो उन्हें जाने कितने जन्म और कितनी योनियों में भटकना पड़ेगा। इसीलिए मैं उन्हें सांसारिक सुख नहीं दे रहा, और अगर वो संसार की आसक्ति हटा दें तो उन्हें सब कुछ मिल जाएगा। इसके लिए उन्हें मुझमे ही मन लगाना पड़ेगा। इन भक्त जन को ये लगता है कि भगवान निधिवन में आते नहीं हम उन्हें कैसे बताएं हम आते भी हैं और अपने भक्त जनो की बात भी चलाते हैं।’ ऐसा कहकर कृष्ण मुस्कुरा दिए। तभी वो भक्त जो वहां छुपे बैठे थे भगवान कि अद्भुत दिव्य लीला देखकर चमत्कृत रह गए। वे दौड़ के आये और प्रभु के चरणो में गिर गए। वे राधा रानी का भी बहुत आभार करना चाहते थे जो उन्होंने ऐसा प्रश्न किया लेकिन वो कुछ कह ही न पाये। प्रभु कि अनुकम्पा से जब वे कुछ बोल सके और जब उनसे वर मांगने का कहा गया तो बार-बार आग्रह करने लगे कि उनके इस दिव्य स्वरुप को ही वो नित्य देखना चाहते हैं।
प्रभु ने कहा ठीक है तुम यहीं निधिवन में लता बनकर रहो अबसे तुम भी हमारे साथ नित्य रात्रि में रहोगे, और प्रभु ने उस भक्त-गोपी को जो कई जन्मों से प्रभु से बिछड़ी हुई थी कृतार्थ कर दिया ।
Once Shri Krishna and Radha ji were joking with all the gopis at night in Nidhivan. Radha ji said to Shri Krishna, I want to know from you why the devotees suffer. Krishna said, ‘ Radhe! Listen, he was a devotee, he used to worship me wholeheartedly. He used to think that by worshiping God there would be happiness in his life, but this did not happen. Many years passed by worshiping him and he became poor. Not only this, his contemporaries became much richer than him and they all made fun of that devotee. The devotee thinks, ‘These people are leading a better life than him, they don’t even have to worship God. I too spent so much time trying to see, neither did I meet God nor did I get any happiness in my life. Now I can’t even give up devotion, otherwise people will consider me more misguided.’ While thinking like this, he felt that it seems that I do not believe in Lord Krishna, how can I believe whether he is real or not. That devotee had heard that, ‘Lord Krishna comes to Nidhivan every day and if someone secretly sees it, he will be harmed.’ He thought what harm would happen to me now, he hid in the Nidhivan in the evening by saving his eyes from everyone and started waiting for the night. Now tell Radha, how can I tell those saints that if worldly desires remain in them, they will have to wander in how many births and lives. That’s why I am not giving them worldly pleasures, and they will get everything if they remove the attachment of the world. For this they have to concentrate on me. These devotees feel that God does not come to Nidhivan, how can we tell them that we do come and talk about our devotees.’ Krishna smiled saying this. That’s why those devotees who were hiding there were amazed to see the wonderful divine pastimes of the Lord. They came running and fell at the feet of the Lord. He also wanted to thank Radha Rani a lot who asked such a question but she could not say anything. By the grace of the Lord, when he could speak something and when he was asked to ask for a boon, he repeatedly insisted that he wanted to see this divine form of his daily.
The Lord said, okay, you stay here as a creeper in Nidhivan, from now on you will also stay with us in the night, and the Lord made that devotee-gopi who was separated from the Lord for many lives.
