जनकपुर में एक ब्राह्मण दम्पत्ति वास करते थे । ब्राह्मण परम विद्वान् और प्रेमी थे । ब्राह्मण बड़े बड़े लोगो के यहां आया जाया करते थे , बड़े बड़े विद्वान् उनके साथ चलते थे । धन ,सम्पत्ति की भी कोई कमी न थी परंतु उनके घर बहुत समय से कोई संतान उत्पन्न नहीं हो रही थी और इसी कारण से वे दोनों पति- पत्नी बहुत दुखी रहते थे । एक दिन उनके घर में एक संत जी पधारे । ब्राह्मण पति -पत्नी ने संत जी की बड़ी उचित प्रकार से सेवा की और सत्कार किया । ब्राह्मण संत से प्रार्थना करते हुए बोले – हे संत भगवान् ! विवाह होकर बहुत वर्ष बीत गए परंतु हमारे कोई संतान नहीं है ,आप कृपा करे ।
संत जी बोले – यदि तुम भावपूर्ण निरंतर संतो की सेवा में लगे रहो तो तुम्हे पुत्र प्राप्त होगा । संत के कहे अनुसार ब्राह्मण दंपत्ति निरंतर संत सेवा में रत रहने लगे । उन दिनों प्रयाग में कुम्भ पड़ा , ब्राह्मण पति पत्नी दोनों कुम्भ में पधारे और वहाँ सभी संतो की बहुत प्रेम से सेवा करी । वापस जनकपुर लौट आनेपर कुछ ही समय बाद पत्नी गर्भवती हो गयी । भगवान् बड़े विचित्र लीला विहारी है ,उनकी लीला कोई नहीं समझ सकता । जैसे जैसे गर्भ बढ़ता जा रहा था वैसे वैसे ब्राह्मण बीमार होते गए और जैसे ही बालक प्रकट हुआ तो ब्राह्मण जी परलोक सिधार गए ।अब वह ब्राह्मणी माता अकेले ही बालक का पालन पोषण करने लगी । प्रयाग में संत सेवा करने के कारण यह बालक उत्पन्न हुआ था अतः इसका नाम प्रयागदत्त रख दिया ।
प्रयागदत्त अर्थात प्रयाग द्वारा प्रदत्त । बालक थोडा बड़ा हुआ तो एक दिन घर में आग लग गयी , सब जल कर राख हो गया । ब्राह्मण के प्रभाव के कारण घर में बड़े बड़े लोगो का ,यजमानो का आना जाना लगा रहता था । वह लोग धन दे जाते थे परंतु बालक पैदा होने पर सब लोग कहने लगे – बालक के घर में आते ही पिता की मृत्यु हो गयी और कुछ ही समय बाद घर में आग भी लग गयी ,अवश्य ही यह बालक बड़ा अनिष्टकारी है । ब्राह्मणी आस पास के घरों से अन्न मांग लाती और किसी तरह बालक को खिलाती । जब बालक लगभग आठ वर्ष का था तब खेलने कूदने की इच्छा से आस पास के लड़को से खलने के लिए चला जाता परंतु उन बालको के घरवाले कह देते की यह प्रयगदत्त बड़ा अनिष्ठ बालक है ,उसके साथ रहोगे तो हानि ही होगी ।
बड़े बड़े संत महात्मा भ्रमण करते करते प्रगयदत्त का दर्शन करने आते । आस पास के लोग समझ नहीं पाते थे की इस अनिष्ट प्रयागदत्त को देखने संत महात्मा क्यों आते है ? उन्हें यह ज्ञात नहीं था की यह बालक अनिष्टकारी नहीं अपितु परम संत है । एक दिन राखी पौर्णिमा (रक्षाबंधन ) का त्यौहार आया । प्रयागदत्त पास ही के एक घर में देख रहे थे की सब भाई बहन बड़े आनंद से त्यौहार मानाने लगे । बहने अपने भाइयो का पूजन करके राखी बाँधती । मिठाई पवाती , दुलार करती और भाई के मंगल की प्रार्थना करती । प्रयाग दत्त ने घर आकर अपनी माता से पूछा -माँ! क्या मेरे और कोई नहीं है ?राखी बाँधने के लिए क्या मेरी कोई बहन नहीं? माता ने बच्चे के सन्तोषार्थ कह दिया -हाँ बेटा ! तुम्हारे है क्यों नहीं कोई । तुम्हारी एक बहन हैं । बालक बोला – कहा है मेरी दीदी ? उनका नाम क्या है ?वो मुझे कभी दिखी क्यों नहीं ? माँ बोली -बेटा तुम्हारे बहनोई (जीजा ) बहुत बड़े राजा है ,वे बहुत दूर अयोध्या नगर में रहते है और दीदी उनकी सेवा में व्यस्त रहती है ।
तुम्हारी दीदी का नाम जानकी है और उनका विवाह अयोध्या में चक्रवर्ती राजाधिराज महाराज दशरथ के बेटे श्री रामचंद्र से हुआ है । अयोध्या उनकी राजधानी है और तुम्हारे बहनोई श्रीरामचंद्र जी वहाँ के राजा है । मिथिला की माताएँ स्वभावत: श्री जानकी जी के प्रति पुत्री या भगिनी भाव रखती है । बच्चे ने कहा -तो माँ! मैं उनके पास जाऊंगा । माता बोली- अच्छा, कुछ और बड़े हो तब जाना । इस प्रकार टाल दिया । लेकिन बालक के हृदय में बहनोई बस गये । उसको सुरति बहनोई में लग गयी । किसी तरह कुछ दिन बीते । फिर एक दिन प्रयागदत्त ने माता से कहा – माँ ! अब तो मैं सयाना हो गया । अब मुझे बहनोई के पास जाने दो । माता ने समझाया पर ब्लाक नहीं माना । वह कहने लगा – अपने दीदी और जीजा जी को देखे बिन ,मुझे खाना पीना कुछ अच्छा नहीं लग रहा ।
माता सोचने लगी की जानकी जी क्या अपने इस अबोध भाई की उपेक्षा कर सकती है ? माता ने उत्तर दिया – ठीक है तुम जाओ परंतु सोचने लगी की बेटी के घर खाली हाथ जाना भी अच्छा नहीं लगता । माता ने कहा – बेटा ! तुम ठहरो, मैं तैयारी कर दूँ, बहिन के लिये कुछ लेते जाओ । उस समय जनकपुर से कुछ लोग अयोध्या ओर जा रहे थे । माता ने सोचा की प्रयागदत्त को इनके साथ भेजकर कनक बिहारिणी बिहारी (सीताराम) जी के दर्शन कराकर लौटा लायेंगे । माता ने आस पास से मांगकर चावला के कुछ कण इकट्ठे किये थे । आज भगवत्कृपा से माता को अच्छे चावल मिल गए । उन्हें पीसकर और मीठा मिलाकर कुछ मोदक बनाये, जिन्हें मिथिला में ‘कसार’ कहते हैं । माता ने कहा – यह मोदक तुम्हारे जीजा जी और दीदी के लिए है । उन कसारों की पोटली प्रयागदत्त को देकर विदा किया और कुछ सत्तू (भूने हुए जौ और चने को पीस कर बनाया जाने वाला व्यंजन ) उनके खाने के लिये भी दे दिया ।
A Brahmin couple used to live in Janakpur. The brahmins were great scholars and lovers. Brahmins used to come here to big people, great scholars used to go with them. There was no shortage of wealth and property, but no children were being born in their house for a long time and for this reason both the husband and wife used to remain very unhappy. One day a saint came to his house. The Brahmin husband and wife served and honored the saint in a very proper way. Praying to the brahmin saint, he said – O Saint God! Many years have passed since we got married but we have no children, please.
Saint ji said – If you keep passionately engaged in the service of saints, then you will get a son. As told by the saint, the brahmin couple continued to be engaged in the service of the saint. In those days, Kumbh took place in Prayag, both Brahmin husband and wife came to Kumbh and served all the saints there with great love. Shortly after returning back to Janakpur, the wife became pregnant. God is a very strange lila vihari, his leela no one can understand. As the pregnancy was progressing, the brahmins became ill and as soon as the child appeared, the brahmin ji went to the next world. Now that brahmin mother alone started taking care of the child. Due to the service of the saint in Prayag, this child was born and hence named it Prayagdatta.
Prayagdatta means given by Prayag. When the boy grew up a little, one day the house caught fire, everything was burnt to ashes. Due to the influence of Brahmins, there used to be a lot of people coming and going in the house. Those people used to give money, but when the child was born, everyone started saying – the father died as soon as the child came into the house and after some time there was a fire in the house, of course this child is very bad. The brahmin brought food from nearby houses and somehow fed the child. When the child was about eight years old, with the desire to jump, he would go to play with the nearby boys, but the family members of those children would say that this Prayagdatt is a very rude child, if you stay with him then there will be a loss.
The great saints would come to see Pragyadutt while traveling around the Mahatma. The people around could not understand why the saintly Mahatma comes to see this evil Prayagdutt. They did not know that this child is not evil but a supreme saint. One day the festival of Rakhi Poornima (Rakshabandhan) came. Prayagdutt was watching in a nearby house that all the brothers and sisters started celebrating the festival with great joy. Sisters tie rakhi by worshiping their brothers. Sweets were received, caressed and prayed for the blessings of the brother. Prayag Dutt came home and asked his mother – Mother! Do I have no one else? Don’t I have any sister to tie the rakhi? The mother said to the satisfaction of the child – yes son! Why don’t you have any? You have a sister. The boy said – where is my sister? What is her name? Why have I never seen her? Mother said – Son, your brother-in-law (brother-in-law) is a very big king, he lives far away in Ayodhya city and sister is busy in his service.
Your sister’s name is Janaki and she is married to Shri Ramchandra, the son of Chakravarti Rajadhiraja Maharaj Dasharatha in Ayodhya. Ayodhya is their capital and your brother-in-law Shri Ramchandra ji is the king there. Mothers of Mithila naturally have a daughter or sister-in-law towards Shri Janaki ji. The child said – So mother! I will go to him. Mother said – well, if you grow up some more then go. thus postponed. But the brother-in-law settled in the heart of the child. Surti got engaged to her brother-in-law. Somehow a few days passed. Then one day Prayagdutt said to the mother – Mother! Now I have grown up. Now let me go to my brother-in-law. Mother explained but did not accept the block. He started saying – without seeing my sister and brother-in-law, I do not like to eat and drink.
Mother started thinking that can Janki ji ignore her innocent brother? Mother replied – okay you go but started thinking that it is not good to go to the daughter’s house empty handed. Mother said – son! You stay, let me prepare, go get something for your sister. At that time some people from Janakpur were going towards Ayodhya. Mother thought that by sending Prayagdutt with them, Kanak would bring Biharini back after seeing Bihari (Sitaram) ji. Mother had collected some particles of Chawla by asking from nearby. Today, by the grace of God, the mother got good rice. Make some modaks by grinding them and mixing sweets, which are called ‘Kasar’ in Mithila. Mother said – This modak is for your brother-in-law and didi. They sent away the bundle of Kasaras to Prayagdatta and also gave some sattu (a dish made by grinding roasted barley and gram) for their food.
