एक बार महाराज दशरथ राम आदी के साथ गंगा स्नान के लिये जा रहे थे । मार्गमें देवर्षि नारदजी से उनकी भेंट हो गयी । महाराज दशरथ आदि सेभीने देवर्षि को प्रणाम किया ।
तदनन्तर नारदजी ने उनसे कहा – महाराज ! अपने पुत्रों तथा सेना आदि के साथ आप कहां जा रहे हैं ? इसपर बड़े ही विनम्रभाव से राजा दशरथ ने बताया- भगवन ! हम सभी गंगा स्नान की अभिलाषा से जा रहे है ।
इसपर मुनि ने उनसे कहा -महाराज ! निस्संदेह आप बड़े अज्ञानी प्रतीत होते है क्योकि पतितपावनी भगवती गंगा जिनके चरणकमलों से प्रकट हुई है, वे ही नारायण श्री राम आपके पुत्ररूप में अवतरित होकर आपके साथमें रह रहे है उनके चरणोंकी सेवा और उनका दर्शन ही दान, पुण्य और गंगा स्नान है, फिर हे राजन् ! आप उनकी सेवा न करके अन्यत्र कहाँ जा रहे है । पुत्र भावसे अपने भगवान् का ही दर्शन करे । श्री राम के मुखकमल के दर्शन के बाद कौन कर्म करना शेष बच जाता है ?
पतितपावनी गंगा अवनीमण्डले ।
सेइ गंगा जन्मिलेन यार पदतले ।।
सेइ दान सेइ पुण्य सेइ गंगास्नान ।
पुत्रभावे देख तुमि प्रभु भगवान् ।।

नारदजी के कहने पर महाराज दशरथ ने वापस घर लौटने का निश्चय किया किंतु भगवान् श्रीराम ने गंगा जी की महिमा का प्रतिपादन करके गंगा स्नान के लिए ही पिताजी को सलाह दी । तदनुसार महाराज दशरथ पुन: गंगा स्नान के लिये आगे बढे । मार्ग में तीन करोड सैनिकों के द्वारा गुहराज ने उनका मार्ग रोक लिया । गुहराज़ ने कहा – मेरे मार्ग को छोड़कर यात्रा करे , यदि इसी मार्ग से यात्रा करना हो तो आप अपने पुत्र का मुझे दर्शन करायें । इसपर दशरथ की सेनाका गुह की सेना के साथ घनघोर युद्ध प्रारम्भ हो गया ।
गुह बंदी बना लिये गये । कौतुकी भगवान् श्री राम ज्यों ही युद्ध देखने की इच्छा से गुहराज के सामने पड़े, गुहने दण्डवत प्रणामकर हाथ जोड़ प्रणाम् किया । प्रभु के पूछने पर उसने बताया – प्रभो ! मेरे पूर्वजन्म की कथा आप सुनें – मैं पूर्व जन्म में महर्षि वसिष्ट का पुत्र वामदेव था ।
एक बार राजा दशरथ अन्धक मुनि के पुत्र की हत्या का प्रायश्चित्त पूछने हमारे आश्रम मे पिता वसिष्ठ के पास आये, पर उस समय मेरे पिताजी आश्रम में नहीं थे । तब महाराज दशरथ ने बडे ही कातर स्वर में हत्या का प्रायश्चित्त बताने के लिये मुझसे प्रार्थना की। उस समय मैंने राम नाम के प्रताप को समझते हुए तीन बार ‘राम राम राम’ इस प्रकार जपने से हत्याका प्रायश्चित्त हो जायगा परामर्श राजाको बतलाया था । तब प्रसन्न होकर राजा वापस चले गये ।
पिताजी के आश्रम में आने पर मैने सारी घटना उन्हें बतला दी। मैंने सोचा था कि आज पिताजी बड़े प्रसन्न होंगे, किंतु परिणाम बिलकुल ही विपरीत हुआ । पिताजी क्रुद्ध होते हुए बोले – वत्स ! तुमने यह क्या किया, लगता है तुम श्री राम नामकी महिमा को ठीकसे जानते नहीं हो, यदि जानते होते तो ऐसा नहीं कहते, क्योकि राम इस नामका केवल एक बार नाम लेनेमात्र से कोई पातक उप-पातकों तथा ब्रह्महत्यादि महापातको से भी मुक्ति हो जाती है फिर तीन बार राम नाम जपने का तुमने राजाको उपदेश क्यों दिया ?
जाओ, तुम नीच योनि में जन्म ग्रहण करोगे और जब राजा दशरथ के घरमे साक्षात् नारायण श्री राम अवतीर्ण होंगे तब उन के दर्शने से तुम्हारी मुक्ति होगी ।
प्रभो ! आज मैं करुणासागर पक्तिपावन आपका दर्शन पाकर कृतार्थ हुआ । इतना कहकर गुहरांज प्रेम विह्नल हो रोने लगा । तब दयस्थागर श्रीराम ने उसे बन्धन मुक्त किया और अग्नि को साक्षी मानकर उससे मैत्री कर ली । भगवान् के मात्र एक नाम का प्रताप कितना है यह इस प्रसंग से ज्ञात होता है ।
सिया के राम
Once Maharaj Dasaratha was going to bathe in the Ganges with Rama and others. On the way, he met Devarshi Naradji. Maharaj Dasharatha etc. also bowed down to Devarshi. After that Naradji said to him – Maharaj! Where are you going with your sons and army etc? On this very humbly, King Dashrath told – God! We all are going with the desire to bathe in the Ganges.
On this Muni said to him – Maharaj! Undoubtedly, you seem very ignorant because from whose lotus feet the Ganga, the Purifier, has appeared, the same Narayan Shri Ram incarnated in the form of your son and living with you. Rajan! Where are you going elsewhere by not serving them. He should have darshan of his God only with the attitude of a son. What work remains to be done after seeing the lotus face of Shri Ram?

Maharaj Dashrath decided to return home on Naradji’s advice, but Lord Shri Ram advised his father to bathe in Ganga after rendering the glory of Ganga ji. Accordingly Maharaj Dasharatha again proceeded to bathe in the Ganges. On the way, Guhraj blocked his way with three crore soldiers. Guhraz said – Leave my route and travel, if you want to travel through this route, then show me your son. On this a fierce battle started between Dasaratha’s army and Guha’s army.
Guha was made prisoner. As soon as the prodigal Lord Shri Ram fell in front of Guhraj with the desire to see the war, he bowed down and bowed down with folded hands. When asked by the Lord, he told – Lord! Listen to the story of my previous birth – I was Vamdev, the son of Maharishi Vasishta in my previous birth.
Once King Dasaratha came to our ashram to ask for atonement for the murder of the son of Andhak Muni, father Vasishtha, but at that time my father was not in the ashram. Then Maharaj Dashrath prayed me to tell me the atonement for the murder in a very sad voice. At that time, understanding the majesty of the name Ram, I told the king that by chanting ‘Ram Ram Ram’ three times in this way, the murderer would be atone. Then the king went back happy.
When my father came to the ashram, I told him the whole incident. I had thought that father would be very happy today, but the result turned out to be just the opposite. Father said getting angry – Vats! What have you done, it seems that you do not know the glory of the name Shri Ram properly, if you had known then you would not have said so, because just by chanting this name of Ram only once, one gets freedom from the sub-degenerates and the great killers of Brahma. Then why did you advise the king to chant the name of Ram thrice?
Go, you will be born in a low birth and when Narayan Shri Ram will incarnate in the house of King Dasaratha, then you will be free from his sight.
Lord! Today, I am blessed to have darshan of you, the ocean of compassion. By saying this, Guhranj Prem started crying. Then Dayasthagar Shriram freed him from bondage and befriended him considering fire as a witness. It is known from this incident how great is the glory of only one name of God. Sita’s Ram
