सूर्यदेव को जीवनी शक्ति प्रदान करने वाला माना जाता है। पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार, सूर्य से प्राप्त ऊर्जा से ही समस्त संसार का संचालन होता है।
रविवार को जो जातक व्रत रखकर सूर्यदेव की पूजा अर्चना करते हैं उन्हें जीवन में यश एवं सम्मान की प्राप्ति होती है। ऐसे जातकों का वैभव पूरे संसार में होता है।
मान्यता यह भी है कि रविवार के दिन सूर्यदेव का व्रत रखने से सभी इच्छाएं पूर्ण होती हैं, शरीर निरोगी रहता है और समस्त प्रकार की पीड़ाओं से निजात मिलती है।
सूर्य रक्षा कवच जहां हर प्रकार की बाधाओं और परेशानियों से जातक की रक्षा करता हैं वहीं सूर्य स्तोत्र जातक का कल्याण करता है। सूर्य स्तोत्र में सूर्यदेव के कई गोपनीय नामों का विवरण है- ।। सूर्य स्तोत्र ।।
विकर्तनो विवस्वांश्च मार्तण्डो भास्करो रविः।
लोक प्रकाशकः श्री माँल्लोक चक्षुर्मुहेश्वरः।।
लोकसाक्षी त्रिलोकेशः कर्ता हर्ता तमिस्रहा।
तपनस्तापनश्चैव शुचिः सप्ताश्ववाहनः।।
गभस्तिहस्तो ब्रह्मा च सर्वदेवनमस्कृतः।
एकविंशतिरित्येष स्तव इष्टः सदा रवेः।।
‘विकर्तन, विवस्वान, मार्तण्ड, भास्कर, रवि, लोकप्रकाशक, श्रीमान, लोकचक्षु, महेश्वर, लोकसाक्षी, त्रिलोकेश, कर्ता, हर्त्ता, तमिस्राहा, तपन, तापन, शुचि, सप्ताश्ववाहन, गभस्तिहस्त, ब्रह्मा और सर्वदेव नमस्कृत- इस प्रकार इक्कीस नामों का यह स्तोत्र भगवान सूर्य को सदा प्रिय है।’

याज्ञवल्क्य उवाच-
श्रणुष्व मुनिशार्दूल सूर्यस्य कवचं शुभम्।
शरीरारोग्दं दिव्यं सव सौभाग्य दायकम्।।
देदीप्यमान मुकुटं स्फुरन्मकर कुण्डलम।
ध्यात्वा सहस्त्रं किरणं स्तोत्र मेततु दीरयेत्।।
शिरों में भास्कर: पातु ललाट मेडमित दुति:।
नेत्रे दिनमणि: पातु श्रवणे वासरेश्वर:।।
ध्राणं धर्मं धृणि: पातु वदनं वेद वाहन:।
जिव्हां में मानद: पातु कण्ठं में सुर वन्दित:।।
सूर्य रक्षात्मकं स्तोत्रं लिखित्वा भूर्ज पत्रके।
दधाति य: करे तस्य वशगा: सर्व सिद्धय:।।
सुस्नातो यो जपेत् सम्यग्योधिते स्वस्थ: मानस:।
सरोग मुक्तो दीर्घायु सुखं पुष्टिं च विदंति।।
