हिन्दू धर्म में हम मंत्र जप के लिए जिस माला का उपयोग करते हैं, उस माला में दानों की संख्या 108 होती है। शास्त्रों में संख्या 108 का अत्यधिक महत्व होता है।माला में 108 ही दाने क्यों होते हैं, इसके पीछे कई धार्मिक, ज्योतिषीय और वैज्ञानिक मान्यताएं हैं।

एक मान्यता के अनुसार माला के 108 दाने और सूर्य की कलाओं का गहरा संबंध है। एक वर्ष में सूर्य 216000 कलाएं बदलता है और वर्ष में दो बार अपनी स्थिति भी बदलता है। छह माह उत्तरायण रहता है और छह माह दक्षिणायन। अत: सूर्य छह माह की एक स्थिति में 108000 बार कलाएं बदलता है।

सांसों के आधार पर निर्धारित है जपमाला के 108 दाने!
इस संबंध में शास्त्रों में दिया गया है कि एक पूर्ण रूप से स्वस्थ व्यक्ति दिनभर में जितनी बार सांस लेता है, उसी से माला के दानों की संख्या 108 का संबंध है। सामान्यत: 24 घंटे में एक व्यक्ति करीब 216000 बार सांस लेता है। दिन के 24 घंटों में से 12 घंटे दैनिक कार्यों में व्यतीत हो जाते हैं और शेष 12 घंटों में व्यक्ति सांस लेता है 10800 बार। इसी समय में देवी-देवताओं का ध्यान करना चाहिए। शास्त्रों के अनुसार व्यक्ति को हर सांस पर यानी पूजन के लिए निर्धारित समय 11 घंटे में 10800 बार ईश्वर का ध्यान करना चाहिए, लेकिन यह संभव नहीं हो पाता है। इसीलिए 10800 बार सांस लेने की संख्या से अंतिम दो शून्य हटाकर जप के लिए 108 संख्या निर्धारित की गई है। इसी संख्या के आधार पर जप की माला में 108 दाने होते हैं।
108 के लिए ज्योतिष की मान्यता!
ज्योतिष के अनुसार ब्रह्मांड को 11 भागों में विभाजित किया गया है। इन 12 भागों के नाम मेष, वृष, मिथुन, कर्क, सिंह, कन्या, तुला, वृश्चिक, धनु, मकर, कुंभ और मीन हैं। इन 11 राशियों में नौ ग्रह सूर्य, चंद्र, मंगल, बुध, गुरु, शुक्र, शनि, राहु और केतु विचरण करते हैं। अत: ग्रहों की संख्या 9 का गुणा किया जाए राशियों की संख्या 12 में तो संख्या 108 प्राप्त हो जाती है।
संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है यह संख्या।
माला के दानों की संख्या १०८ संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है। एक अन्य मान्यता के अनुसार ऋषियों ने माला में १०८ दाने रखने के पीछे ज्योतिषी कारण बताया है। ज्योतिष शास्त्र के अनुसार कुल २७ नक्षत्र बताए गए हैं। हर नक्षत्र के ४ चरण होते हैं और २७ नक्षत्रों के कुल चरण १०८ ही होते हैं। माला का एक एक दाना नक्षत्र के एक एक चरण का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है।
किसे कहते हैं सुमेरू!
माला के दानों से मालूम हो जाता है कि मंत्र जप की कितनी संख्या हो गई है। जप की माला में सबसे ऊपर एक बड़ा दाना होता है जो कि सुमेरू कहलाता है। सुमेरू से ही जप की संख्या प्रारंभ होती है और यहीं पर खत्म भी। जब जप का एक चक्र पूर्ण होकर सुमेरू दाने तक पहुंच जाता है तब माला को पलट लिया जाता है। सुमेरू को लांघना नहीं चाहिए।
जब भी मंत्र जप पूर्ण करें तो सुमेरू को माथे पर लगाकर नमन करना चाहिए। इससे जप का पूर्ण फल प्राप्त होता है।

Normally a person breathes about 216000 times in 24 hours. Out of 24 hours of the day, 12 hours are spent in daily activities and in the remaining 12 hours the person breathes 10800 times. During this time one should meditate on Gods and Goddesses. According to the scriptures, a person should meditate on God 10800 times on every breath i.e. in the stipulated time of worship, 11 hours, but this is not possible. That is why the number 108 has been fixed for chanting by removing the last two zeros from the number of 10800 breaths. Based on this number, the chanting rosary has 108 beads.

According to astrology the universe is divided into 11 parts. The names of these 12 parts are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. In these 11 zodiac signs, nine planets, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu move. Therefore, if the number of planets is multiplied by 9 and the number of zodiac signs is 12, we get the number 108.

From the beads of the rosary it becomes known the number of times the mantra has been chanted. There is a big bead at the top of the chanting rosary which is called Sumeru. The number of chanting starts from Sumeru and ends here also. When one cycle of chanting is completed and reaches Sumeru Dana, then the rosary is turned over. Sumeru should not be crossed.
Whenever you finish chanting the mantra, you should bow to Sumeru by applying it on your forehead. By this one gets the full results of chanting.
