काशी मे श्री मधुसूदन सरस्वती नाम के एक अद्वैत वेदांती हुए । उनको कुछ ही दिनों मे शंकराचार्य पद मिलने वाला था । उससे पहले कुछ कार्य के लिए वह वृंदावन गए थे । मधुकरी मांगकर रहते थे, केवल एक घर से मधुकरी मांगते । मिल जाये तो ठीक, नही मिली तो दूसरे घर मे नही जाते । एक ब्रज की ग्वालिनि के दरवाजे पर गए । वह चूल्हे पर रोटियां बना रही थी, उसकी गोदी मे उसका बच्चा बैठकर माखन रोटी पा रहा था । बाबा को देखकर उसने अपने बच्चे को बाजू में रखा और बाबा के पात्र मे रोटी डाली । स्वामी जी ने उसकी साड़ी पर देखा तो बालक का मल लगा हुआ था ।
आंख बंद करके स्वामी जी सोचने लगे – अरे ! इस रोटी को लौटा भी नही सकता और पा भी नही सकता । आंख खोली तो देखा की बालकृष्ण उस गोपी के आंगन मे बैठे है और उस बालक के मुख की माखन रोटी छीनकर खा रहे है । स्वामी जी समझ गए की यह ब्रज की गोपियां सामान्य नही है, ब्रजवासियों का भाव सामान्य नही है । सारा तत्वज्ञान धरा रह गया, स्वामी जी वही उस गोपी के सामने रज मे लोटने लगे । निश्चय कर लिया की अब काशी लौट कर नही जाऊंगा, यही ब्रज मे गोपियों की दासी बन कर रज मे पड़ा रहूंगा ।
छह महीने हो गए, स्वामी जी रोज यमुना स्नान करते, गोपियों की चरण रज माथे पर लगाते और स्वयं को गोपियों की दासी मानकर पागलों की तरह रज मे लेटे रहते । शिष्य ढूंढते हुए वृंदावन आये । स्वामी जी से कहा – आप जैसे तत्वज्ञानी महापुरुष, वेदांत के ज्ञाता ऐसे पागलों की तरह रज मे लेटे रहते है । आपका तत्वज्ञान कहा चला गया ?
स्वामी जी ने एक श्लोक बोला – वंशी विभूषित करात् नवनीरद आभात् पीताम्बरात् अरुणबिंबफल अधरोष्ठात्।
पूर्णेंदु सुंदर मुखात् अरविंद नेत्रात् कृष्णात्परं किमपि तत्त्वमहं न जाने ।।
जिनके करकमलों में बंसी शोभायमान है, जिनके सुंदर शरीर की आभा नये बादलों जैसी घनश्याम है, जिनका सुंदर मुख पूर्ण चन्द्र जैसा है, जिनके नेत्र, कमल की भांति सुंदर है, जिन्होंने पीताम्बर धारण किया है, जिनके अधरोष्ठ उदित होते हुए सूर्य के लाल फल के रंग जैसा है, ऐसे श्रीकृष्ण भगवान के सिवा और कोई परम तत्व है, यह मैं नहीं जानता ।
शिष्यों ने कहा – शंकराचार्य पद आपकी प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है । स्वामी जी ने कहा – मुझे अब इस पद से क्या मतलब? भगवान ने कृपा करके मुझे गोपियों के पद चरणों की दासी बना दिया । अब मै ब्रज छोड़ कर कही नहीं जाऊंगा ।
In Kashi there was an Advaita Vedanti named Shri Madhusudan Saraswati. He was going to get the post of Shankaracharya in a few days. Before that he had gone to Vrindavan for some work. Madhukari lived by asking, asking for honey from only one house. If you get it, it is okay, if you do not get it, then do not go to another house. One went to the door of Braj’s Gualini. She was making rotis on the stove, her child sitting on her lap was getting butter and bread. Seeing Baba, he kept his child by his side and put bread in Baba’s pot. When Swamiji saw on her sari, the child’s stool was covered.
Swamiji closed his eyes and started thinking – Oh! Can’t even return this bread and can’t even get it. When he opened his eyes, he saw that Balakrishna is sitting in the courtyard of that gopi and is eating the bread by snatching the butter from that child’s mouth. Swamiji understood that these gopis of Braj are not normal, the sentiments of the people of Braj are not normal. All the philosophy was lost, Swamiji started rolling in front of the same gopi. I have decided that now I will not go back to Kashi, I will remain in the kingdom of Braj as a maidservant of the gopis.
It has been six months, Swamiji used to bathe in Yamuna every day, apply Raj on the forehead of the Gopis’ feet and lay like a maid of the Gopis in the Raj like a madman. He came to Vrindavan in search of disciples. Said to Swamiji – A great man of philosophy like you, the knower of Vedanta, lies like such a madman. Where has your philosophy gone?
Swami Ji said a verse – Vanshi adorned hands, fresh water appearance, yellow clothes, red image fruit lips. I know nothing better than the beautiful face of the full moon and the lotus eyes of Krishna.
Whose lotus flowers are shining, Whose beautiful body is like new clouds, Whose beautiful face is like a full moon, Whose eyes are beautiful like lotus, Who wears a yellow tree, Whose chestnuts are rising from the red fruits of the sun. I do not know that there is any other supreme element other than Lord Krishna like that.
The disciples said – Shankaracharya’s post is waiting for you. Swamiji said – what do I mean by this post now? God has kindly made me a maidservant at the feet of the gopis. Now I will not leave Braj and go anywhere.
