23 अक्टूबर को धनतेरस है। इस दिन भगवान यमराज, धन्वंतरि और चित्रगुप्तजी की पूजा की जाती है। इस दिन से दिवाली का पांच दिनी उत्सव प्रारंभ हो जाता है और इसी दिन सोना और पीतल खरीदा जाता है। इस दिन त्रयोदशी तिथि रहती है इसीलिए इस दिन 13 दीपक जाने की परंपरा है। यदि आप दीये जला ही रहे हैं तो किस्मत बदलने के लिए मात्र 1 रुपए की एक 1 चीज दीपक में डाल दें।
दीपदान से मिलेगी कर्ज से मुक्ति : परिवार के सभी सदस्यों के घर आने और खाने-पीने के बाद सोते समय एक पुराने दीपक में सरसों का तेल डालकर उसे जलाया जाता है। फिर उसे घर में सभी जगह घुमाया जाता है और इसके बाद यह दीपक घर से बाहर दक्षिण की ओर मुख कर नाली या कूड़े के ढेर के पास रख दिया जाता है। इसके बाद जल चढ़ा कर दीपदान करते समय यह मंत्र बोला जाता है-
🚩मृत्युना पाशहस्तेन कालेन भार्यया सह।
त्रयोदश्यां दीपदानात्सूर्यज: प्रीतयामिति।।
- मुख्य द्वार आग्नेय कोण में है तो द्वार पर दीपक जलाएं तो उसमें कौड़ी जरूर डालें।
- मुख्य द्वार दक्षिण दिशा में है तो दीपक जलाएं तो उसमें राईं अवश्य डालें।
- मुख्य द्वार नैऋत्य दिशा में है तो द्वार पर दीपक जलाएं तो उसमें लौंग जरूर डालें।
- मुख्य द्वार पश्चिम दिशा में है तो दीपक जलाएं तो उनमें एक किशमिश जरूर डालें।
- मुख्य द्वार वायव्य कोण की दिशा में है तो दीपक में थोड़ी मिश्री जरूर डालें।
- मुख्य द्वार उत्तर दिशा में है तो दीपक जलाएं तो उनमें एक इलायची जरूर डालें।
- मुख्य द्वार ईशान दिशा में है तो दीपक जलाएं तो उनमें एक चुटकी हल्दी जरूर डाल दें।
- मुख्य द्वार पूर्व दिशा में है तो दीपक जलाएं तो उनमें थोड़ा कुमुकुम जरूर डाल दे।

After this, while offering water to the lamp, this mantra is chanted-

If the main door is in the south direction, then if you light a lamp, then definitely put mustard seeds in it. If the main door is in the southeast direction, then if you light a lamp at the door, then definitely put cloves in it. If the main door is in the west direction, then if you light a lamp, then definitely put a raisin in it. If the main door is in the direction of the west angle, then definitely put some sugar candy in the lamp. If the main door is in the north direction, then if you light a lamp, then definitely put a cardamom in it. If the main door is in the northeast, then if you light a lamp, then definitely put a pinch of turmeric in them. If the main door is in the east direction, then if you light a lamp, then definitely put some kumkum in them.
