परमा (कामदा) एकादशी

विशेष – 12 अगस्त, शनिवार को एकादशी का व्रत (उपवास) रखे।
अर्जुन बोले : हे जनार्दन ! आप अधिक (लौंद/मल/पुरुषोत्तम) मास के कृष्णपक्ष की एकादशी का नाम तथा उसके व्रत की विधि बतलाइये । इसमें किस देवता की पूजा की जाती है तथा इसके व्रत से क्या फल मिलता है?

श्रीकृष्ण बोले : हे पार्थ ! इस एकादशी का नाम ‘परमा’ है । इसके व्रत से समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं तथा मनुष्य को इस लोक में सुख तथा परलोक में मुक्ति मिलती है । भगवान विष्णु की धूप, दीप, नैवेध, पुष्प आदि से पूजा करनी चाहिए । महर्षियों के साथ इस एकादशी की जो मनोहर कथा काम्पिल्य नगरी में हुई थी, कहता हूँ । ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो :

काम्पिल्य नगरी में सुमेधा नाम का अत्यंत धर्मात्मा ब्राह्मण रहता था । उसकी स्त्री अत्यन्त पवित्र तथा पतिव्रता थी । पूर्व के किसी पाप के कारण यह दम्पति अत्यन्त दरिद्र था । उस ब्राह्मण की पत्नी अपने पति की सेवा करती रहती थी तथा अतिथि को अन्न देकर स्वयं भूखी रह जाती थी ।

एक दिन सुमेधा अपनी पत्नी से बोला: ‘हे प्रिये ! गृहस्थी धन के बिना नहीं चलती इसलिए मैं परदेश जाकर कुछ उद्योग करुँ ।’

उसकी पत्नी बोली: ‘हे प्राणनाथ ! पति अच्छा और बुरा जो कुछ भी कहे, पत्नी को वही करना चाहिए । मनुष्य को पूर्वजन्म के कर्मों का फल मिलता है । विधाता ने भाग्य में जो कुछ लिखा है, वह टाले से भी नहीं टलता । हे प्राणनाथ ! आपको कहीं जाने की आवश्यकता नहीं, जो भाग्य में होगा, वह यहीं मिल जायेगा ।’

पत्नी की सलाह मानकर ब्राह्मण परदेश नहीं गया । एक समय कौण्डिन्य मुनि उस जगह आये । उन्हें देखकर सुमेधा और उसकी पत्नी ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया और बोले: ‘आज हम धन्य हुए । आपके दर्शन से हमारा जीवन सफल हुआ ।’ मुनि को उन्होंने आसन तथा भोजन दिया ।

भोजन के पश्चात् पतिव्रता बोली: ‘हे मुनिवर ! मेरे भाग्य से आप आ गये हैं । मुझे पूर्ण विश्वास है कि अब मेरी दरिद्रता शीघ्र ही नष्ट होनेवाली है । आप हमारी दरिद्रता नष्ट करने के लिए उपाय बतायें ।’

इस पर कौण्डिन्य मुनि बोले : ‘अधिक मास’ (मल मास) की कृष्णपक्ष की ‘परमा एकादशी’ के व्रत से समस्त पाप, दु:ख और दरिद्रता आदि नष्ट हो जाते हैं । जो मनुष्य इस व्रत को करता है, वह धनवान हो जाता है । इस व्रत में कीर्तन भजन आदि सहित रात्रि जागरण करना चाहिए । महादेवजी ने कुबेर को इसी व्रत के करने से धनाध्यक्ष बना दिया है ।’

फिर मुनि कौण्डिन्य ने उन्हें ‘परमा एकादशी’ के व्रत की विधि कह सुनायी । मुनि बोले: ‘हे ब्राह्मणी ! इस दिन प्रात: काल नित्यकर्म से निवृत्त होकर विधिपूर्वक पंचरात्रि व्रत आरम्भ करना चाहिए । जो मनुष्य पाँच दिन तक निर्जल व्रत करते हैं, वे अपने माता पिता और स्त्रीसहित स्वर्गलोक को जाते हैं । हे ब्राह्मणी ! तुम अपने पति के साथ इसी व्रत को करो । इससे तुम्हें अवश्य ही सिद्धि और अन्त में स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होगी |’

कौण्डिन्य मुनि के कहे अनुसार उन्होंने ‘परमा एकादशी’ का पाँच दिन तक व्रत किया । व्रत समाप्त होने पर ब्राह्मण की पत्नी ने एक राजकुमार को अपने यहाँ आते हुए देखा । राजकुमार ने ब्रह्माजी की प्रेरणा से उन्हें आजीविका के लिए एक गाँव और एक उत्तम घर जो कि सब वस्तुओं से परिपूर्ण था, रहने के लिए दिया । दोनों इस व्रत के प्रभाव से इस लोक में अनन्त सुख भोगकर अन्त में स्वर्गलोक को गये ।

हे पार्थ ! जो मनुष्य ‘परमा एकादशी’ का व्रत करता है, उसे समस्त तीर्थों व यज्ञों आदि का फल मिलता है । जिस प्रकार संसार में चार पैरवालों में गौ, देवताओं में इन्द्रराज श्रेष्ठ हैं, उसी प्रकार मासों में अधिक मास उत्तम है । इस मास में पंचरात्रि अत्यन्त पुण्य देनेवाली है । इस महीने में ‘पद्मिनी एकादशी’ भी श्रेष्ठ है। उसके व्रत से समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और पुण्यमय लोकों की प्राप्ति होती है ।

Shri Krishna said: Hey Partha! The name of this Ekadashi is ‘Parma’. All sins are destroyed by its fasting and man gets happiness in this world and freedom in the hereafter. Lord Vishnu should be worshiped with incense, lamp, naivedh, flowers etc. Let me tell you the beautiful story of this Ekadashi with the great sages that took place in Kampilya city. listen carefully

In the city of Kampilya, there lived a devout Brahmin named Sumedha. His wife was very pious and chaste. This couple was very poor because of some past sin. The wife of that Brahmin used to serve her husband and she used to starve herself by giving food to the guest.

One day Sumedha said to his wife: ‘O dear! The household cannot run without money, so I should go abroad and do some business.’

His wife said: ‘ Hey Prannath! Whatever the husband says, good or bad, the wife should do the same. Man gets the fruits of his past deeds. Whatever the Creator has written in the fate, it cannot be avoided even by delay. Hey Prannath! You don’t need to go anywhere, whatever is in your destiny, you will find it here.’

Following the advice of his wife, the Brahmin did not go abroad. Once Kaundinya Muni came to that place. Seeing him, Sumedha and his wife bowed down to him and said: ‘Today we are blessed. Your darshan made our life successful.’ He offered a seat and food to the sage.

Pativrata said after the meal: ‘ O Munivar! You have come by my luck. I have full faith that now my poverty is going to end soon. You tell me the solution to destroy our poverty.

On this, Kaundinya Muni said: By fasting on ‘Parama Ekadashi’ of Krishna Paksha of ‘Adhik Maas’ (Mal Maas), all sins, sorrows and poverty etc. are destroyed. The person who observes this fast becomes rich. In this fast, there should be night vigil along with kirtan, bhajan etc. Mahadevji has made Kuber the head of wealth by observing this fast.

Then Muni Kaundinya told him the method of fasting on ‘Parama Ekadashi’. Muni said: ‘ Hey Brahmin! On this day, early in the morning after retiring from daily work, the Pancharatri fast should be started. The people who keep waterless fast for five days go to heaven along with their parents and wife. Hey Brahmin! You observe this fast with your husband. By doing this, you will definitely get success and in the end you will get heaven.

According to Kaundinya Muni, he fasted for five days on ‘Parama Ekadashi’. At the end of the fast, the Brahmin’s wife saw a prince coming to her place. The prince, inspired by Lord Brahma, gave him a village to live in and a perfect house full of all things to live in. With the effect of this fast, both of them went to heaven after enjoying eternal happiness in this world.

Hey Partha! The person who fasts on ‘Parama Ekadashi’, gets the fruits of all pilgrimages and yagya etc. Just as the cow is the best among the four-legged in the world, Indraraj is the best among the gods, in the same way, more months are the best among the months. Pancharatri in this month is very auspicious. ‘Padmini Ekadashi’ is also the best in this month. All sins are destroyed by his fast and virtuous worlds are attained.
