आत्मबोध कार्तिक शुक्ल प्रतिपदा गौवर्धन पूजा पर्व

दीपावली की अगले दिन कार्तिक माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की प्रतिपदा तिथि को गोवर्धन पूजा पर्व मनाया जाता है, इसे अन्नकूट के नाम से भी जानते हैं। इस त्यौहार का भारतीय लोकजीवन में काफी महत्व है। इस पर्व में प्रकृति के साथ मानव का सीधा सम्बन्ध दिखाई देता है। इस पर्व की अपनी मान्यता और लोककथा है। गोवर्धन पूजा में गौधन यानी गायों की पूजा की जाती है।

गौमाता के प्रति अपना प्रेम और उनका महत्व बताते हुए भगवान कृष्ण भी कहते हैं—
“गावो मे ह्यग्रतः सन्तु गावो मे सन्तु पृष्ठतः।
गावो मे हृदये सन्तु गवां मध्ये वसाम्यहम्॥”

अर्थात् — “गायें मेरे आगे हों, गायें मेरे पीछे हो, गायें मेरे हृदय में स्थित रहें और मैं सदा गायों के मध्य ही निवास करुँ।”

शास्त्रों में बताया गया है कि गौमाता उसी प्रकार पवित्र होती है जैसे नदियों में गंगा। गाय को देवी लक्ष्मी का स्वरूप भी कहा गया है। देवी लक्ष्मी जिस प्रकार सुख समृद्धि प्रदान करती हैं उसी प्रकार गौमाता भी अपने दूध से स्वास्थ्य रूपी धन प्रदान करती हैं। और कृषि हेतु अत्यंत उपयोगी गौबर गौमूत्र से लेकर अनेक औषधीय गौमय पदार्थ गौमाता आजीवन हमें प्रदान करती हैं। इनका बछड़ा, हल चलाने में योगदान दे खेतों में अन्न उगाता है। इस तरह गौ सम्पूर्ण मानव जाति के लिए पूजनीय और आदरणीय है। गौ के प्रति श्रद्धा प्रकट करने के लिए ही कार्तिक शुक्ल पक्ष प्रतिपदा के दिन गोर्वधन की पूजा की जाती है और इसके प्रतीक के रूप में गाय की।

जब योगेश्वर श्रीकृष्ण ने ब्रजवासियों को मूसलाधार वर्षा से बचने के लिए सात दिन तक गोवर्धन पर्वत को अपनी सबसे छोटी उँगली पर उठाकर रखा और बृजवासी उसकी आश्रय में सुखपूर्वक रहे। सातवें दिन भगवान ने गोवर्धन को नीचे रखा और हर वर्ष गोवर्धन पूजा करके अन्नकूट उत्सव मनाने की आज्ञा दी। तभी से यह उत्सव अन्नकूट के नाम से मनाया जाने लगा।

गोवर्धन पूजा के दौरान एक मंत्र का जाप करना चाहिए—

‘गोवर्धन धराधार गोकुल त्राणकारक।
विष्णुबाहु कृतोच्छ्राय गवां कोटिप्रभो भव।’

कुछ स्थानों पर गोवर्धन पूजा के साथ ही गायों को स्नान कराने की उन्हें सिंदूर इत्यादि पुष्प मालाओं से सजाए जाने की परंपरा भी है इस दिन गाय का पूजन भी किया जाता है।

Govardhan Puja festival is celebrated on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, the next day of Diwali, it is also known as Annakoot. This festival has great importance in Indian folk life. In this festival the direct relationship of humans with nature is visible. This festival has its own belief and folklore. Gaudhan i.e. cows are worshiped in Govardhan Puja.

Explaining his love for cows and their importance, Lord Krishna also says— “Let the cows be in front of me and let the cows be behind me. Let the cows be in my heart and I shall dwell among the cows.

Meaning – “May the cows be in front of me, may the cows be behind me, may the cows reside in my heart and may I always reside among the cows.”

It is said in the scriptures that mother cow is as sacred as the rivers like Ganga. Cow has also been said to be the form of Goddess Lakshmi. Just as Goddess Lakshmi provides happiness and prosperity, similarly mother cow also provides wealth in the form of health through her milk. And from cow dung, cow urine which is very useful for agriculture, many medicinal cow products are provided to us throughout our life. Their calf helps in plowing and grows food in the fields. In this way cow is worshipable and respectable for the entire human race. To show reverence towards the cow, Govardhan is worshiped on the day of Kartik Shukla Paksha Pratipada and the cow is worshiped as its symbol.

When Yogeshwar Shri Krishna kept the Govardhan mountain on his smallest finger for seven days to save the people of Braj from the torrential rains and the people of Braj lived happily under its shelter. On the seventh day, God placed Govardhan down and ordered to celebrate Annakoot festival by performing Govardhan puja every year. Since then this festival started being celebrated by the name of Annakoot.

One mantra should be chanted during Govardhan Puja-

‘Govardhana Dharadhar Gokul Tranakarak. Vishnubahu, raised up, become the lord of millions of cows.

At some places, along with Govardhan Puja, there is a tradition of bathing the cows and decorating them with garlands of vermilion etc. Cows are also worshiped on this day.
