जिसके सुनने से सब पाप नाश हो जाये।
कार्तिक माहात्म्य का, लिखूं छठा अध्याय।।
नारद जी बोले – जब दो घड़ी रात बाकी रहे तब तुलसी की मृत्तिका, वस्त्र और कलश लेकर जलाशय पर जाये. कार्तिक में जहां कहीं भी प्रत्येक जलाशय के जल में स्नान करना चाहिए. गरम जल की अपेक्षा ठण्डे जल में स्नान करने से दस गुना पुण्य होता है. उससे सौ गुना पुण्य बाहरी कुएं के जल में स्नान करने से होता है. उससे अधिक पुण्य बावड़ी में और उससे भी अधिक पुण्य पोखर में स्नान करने से होता है. उससे दस गुना झरनों में और उससे भी अधिक पुण्य कार्तिक में नदी स्नान करने से होता है. उससे भी दस गुना पुण्य वहां होता हैं जहां दो नदियों का संगम हो और यदि कहीं तीन नदियों का संगम हो तब तो पुण्य की कोई सीमा ही नहीं.
स्नान से पहले भगवान का ध्यान कर के स्नानार्थ संकल्प करना चाहिए फिर तीर्थ में उपस्थित देवताओं को क्रमश: अर्ध्य, आचमनीय आदि देना चाहिए. अर्ध्य मन्त्र इस प्रकार है
हे कमलनाथ्! आपको नमस्कार है, हे जलशायी भगवान! आपको प्रणाम है, हे ऋषिकेश! आपको नमस्कार है. मेरे दिए अर्ध्य को आप ग्रहण करें. वैकुण्ठ, प्रयाग तथा बद्रिकाश्रम में जहां कहीं भगवान विष्णु गये, वहां उन्होंने तीन प्रकार से अपना पांव रखा था. वहां पर ऋषि वेद यज्ञों सहित सभी देवता मेरी रक्षा करते रहें. हे जनार्दन, हे दामोदर, हे देवेश! आपको प्रसन्न करने हेतु मैं कार्तिक मास में विधि-विधान से ब्रह्ममुहूर्त में स्नान कर रहा हूँ. आपकी कृपा से मेरे सभी पापों का नाश हो. हे प्रभो! कार्तिक मास में व्रत तथा विधिपूर्वक स्नान करने वाला मैं अर्ध्य देता हूँ, आप राधिका सहित ग्रहण करें. हे कृष्ण! हे बलशाली राक्षसों का संहार करने वाले भगवन्! हे पापों का नाश करने वाले! कार्तिक मास में प्रतिदिन दिये हुए मेरे इस अर्ध्य द्वारा कार्तिक स्नान का व्रत करने वाला फल मुझे प्राप्त हो”.
तत्पश्चात विष्णु, शिव तथा सूर्य का ध्यान कर के जल में प्रवेश कर नाभि के बराबर जल में खड़े होकर विधिपूर्वक स्नान करना चाहिए. गृहस्थी को तिल और आँवले का चूर्ण लगाकर तथा विधवा स्त्री व यती को तुलसी की जड़ की मिट्टी लगाकर स्नान करना चाहिए. सप्तमी, अमावस्या, नवमी, त्रयोदशी, द्वितीया, दशमी आदि तिथियों को आंवला तथा तिल से स्नान करना वर्जित है. स्नान करते हुए निम्न शब्दों का उच्चारण करना चाहिए –
जिस भक्तिभाव से भगवान ने देवताओं के कार्य के लिए तीन प्रकार का रूप धारण किया था, वही पापों का नाश करने वाले भगवान विष्णु अपनी कृपा से मुझे पवित्र बनाएं. जो अम्नुष्य भगवान विष्णु की आज्ञा से कार्तिक व्रत करता है, उसकी इन्द्रादि सभी देवता रक्षा करते हैं इसलिए वह मुझको पवित्र करें. बीजों, रहस्यों तथा यज्ञों सहित वेदों के मन्त्र कश्यप आदि ऋषि, इन्द्रादि देवता मुझे पवित्र करें. अदिति आदि सभी नारियां, यज्ञ, सिद्ध, सर्प और समस्त औषधियाँ व तीनो लोकों के पहाड़ मुझे पवित्र करें”
इस प्रकार कहकर स्नान करने के बाद मनुष्य को हाथ में पवित्री धारण कर के देवता, ऋषि, मनुष्यों तथा पितरों का विधिपूर्वक तर्पण करना चाहिए. तर्पण करते समय तर्पण में जितने तिल रहते हैं, उतने वर्ष पर्यन्त व्रती के पितृगण स्वर्ग में वास करते हैं. उसके बाद व्रती को जल से निकलकर शुद्ध वस्त्र धारण करने चाहिए. सभी तीर्थों के सारे कार्यों से निवृत्त होकर पुन: भगवान विष्णु का पूजन करना चाहिए. सभी तीर्थो के सारे देवताओं का स्मरण करके भक्तिपूर्वक सावधान होकर चन्दन, फूल और फलों के साथ भगवान विष्णु को फिर से अर्ध्य देना चाहिए. अर्ध्य के मंत्र का अर्थ इस प्रकार है :-
‘मैंने पवित्र कार्तिक मास में स्नान किया है. हे विष्णु ! राधा के साथ आप मेरे दिये अर्ध्य को ग्रहण करें’
तत्पश्चात चन्दन, फूल और ताम्बूल आदि से वेदपाठी ब्राह्मणों का श्रद्धापूर्वक पूजन करें और बारम्बार नमस्कार करें. ब्राह्मणों के दाएं पांव में तीर्थों का वास होता है, मुँह में वेद और समस्त अंगों में देवताओं का वास होता है. अपने कल्याण की इच्छा रखने वाले मनुष्य को इनका न तो अपमान करना चाहिए और न ही इनका विरोध करना चाहिए. फिर एकाग्रचित्त होकर भगवान विष्णु की प्रिय तुलसी जी की पूजा करनी चाहिए, उनकी परिक्रमा कर के उनको प्रणाम करना चाहिए –
हे देवि! हे तुलसी! देवताओं ने ही प्राचीनकाल से तुम्हारा निर्माण किया है और ऋषियों ने तुम्हारी पूजा की है. हे विष्णुप्रिया तुलसी! आपको नमस्कार है. आप मेरे समस्त पापों को नष्ट करो.
इस प्रकार जो मनुष्य भक्तिपूर्वक कार्तिक व्रत का अनुष्ठान करते हैं, वे संसार के सुखों का भोग करते हुए अन्त में मोक्ष को प्राप्त करते हैं.
By listening to which all sins are destroyed.
Let me write the sixth chapter of Kartik Mahatmya.
Narad ji said – When two hours of the night remain, then take Tulsi’s clay, clothes and urn and go to the reservoir. Wherever in Kartik one should take bath in the water of each reservoir. Taking bath in cold water is ten times more virtuous than in hot water. A hundred times more virtue than that is obtained by bathing in the water of an external well. More virtue than that is obtained by bathing in a stepwell and even more virtue by bathing in a pond. Ten times more than that in the springs and even more virtue is obtained by bathing in the river in Kartik. Even ten times the virtue is there where there is a confluence of two rivers and if there is a confluence of three rivers, then there is no limit to the virtue.
Before bathing, after meditating on the Lord, one should make a resolution for bathing, then the deities present in the pilgrimage should be given Ardhya, Achamaniya etc. respectively. Ardhya Mantra is as follows
Oh Kamal Nath! Greetings to you, Lord of the waters! I salute you, O Rishikesh! Greetings to you. You accept my blessings. Wherever Lord Vishnu went to Vaikuntha, Prayag and Badrikashram, he had set his feet in three ways. There, all the gods, including the sage Veda Yagyas, keep protecting me. O Janardana, O Damodar, O Devesh! In order to please you, I am taking a holy bath in the Brahma Muhurta in the month of Kartik. May all my sins be destroyed by your grace. Oh, Lord! In the month of Kartik, I give Ardhya for fasting and bathing methodically, you should take it with Radhika. O Krishna! O Lord who destroys the mighty demons! O destroyer of sins! May I get the fruits of fasting for Kartik bath through this Ardhya given every day in the month of Kartik.
After that, after meditating on Vishnu, Shiva and Surya, after entering the water, standing in the water equal to the navel, one should take a ritual bath. The householder should take a bath by applying the powder of sesame and gooseberry and the widow should take a bath by applying the soil of the root of Tulsi. Bathing with amla and sesame is prohibited on Saptami, Amavasya, Navami, Trayodashi, Dwitiya, Dashami etc. The following words should be uttered while bathing –
With the devotion with which the Lord took three forms for the work of the deities, may Lord Vishnu, who destroys sins, make me pure by his grace. The person who observes the Kartik fast on the orders of Lord Vishnu, is protected by all the gods, so he should purify me. May the sages of the Vedas, Kashyap etc., Indra and Gods purify me with the seeds, secrets and sacrifices of the Vedas. May all the women like Aditi, Yagyas, Siddhas, snakes and all the medicines and the mountains of the three worlds purify me.”
Having said this, after taking a bath, a person should worship the gods, sages, human beings and ancestors in a methodical manner by holding a holy hand in his hand. The number of moles that remain in the tarpan while performing the tarpan, for that many years, the ancestors of the fasting person reside in heaven. After that the fast should come out of the water and wear pure clothes. After retiring from all the work of all the pilgrimages, Lord Vishnu should be worshiped again. After remembering all the deities of all the pilgrimages, one should again offer Ardhya to Lord Vishnu with sandalwood, flowers and fruits. The meaning of the mantra of Ardhya is as follows:-
‘I have taken a bath in the holy month of Kartik. Oh Vishnu! With Radha you accept my blessings’
After that worship the Vedapathi Brahmins with sandalwood, flowers and tambul etc. with devotion and do Namaskar repeatedly. Tirthas reside in the right feet of Brahmins, Vedas in the mouth and gods reside in all the organs. A person desirous of his welfare should neither insult nor oppose him. Then one should worship Lord Vishnu’s beloved Tulsi ji by concentrating, doing his circumambulation and bowing down to him –
O goddess! Oh Tulsi! It is the gods who have created you since ancient times and the sages have worshiped you. Oh Vishnupriya Tulsi! Greetings to you. You destroy all my sins.
In this way, those who perform the rituals of Kartik Vrat with devotion, while enjoying the pleasures of the world, they attain salvation in the end.
