भारत ही नहीं, तो विश्व भर में हिन्दू धर्मग्रन्थों को शुद्ध पाठ एवं छपाई में बहुत कम मूल्य पर पहुँचाने का श्रेय जिस विभूति को है, उन श्री हनुमान प्रसाद पोद्दार (भाई जी) का जन्म शिलांग में 17 सितम्बर, 1892 को हुआ था। उनके पिता श्री भीमराज तथा माता श्रीमती रिखीबाई थीं। दो वर्ष की अवस्था में ही इनकी माता जी का देहान्त हो गया।
केवल 13 वर्ष की अवस्था में भाई जी ने बंग-भंग से प्रेरित होकर स्वदेशी व्रत लिया और फिर जीवन भर उसका पालन किया। केवल उन्होंने ही नहीं, तो उनकी पत्नी ने भी इस व्रत को निभाया और घर की सब विदेशी वस्तुओं की होली जला दी। भाई जी के तीन विवाह हुए। प्रथम दो पत्नियो का जीवन अधिक नहीं रहा; पर तीसरी पत्नी ने उनका जीवन भर साथ दिया।
1912 में वे अपना पुश्तैनी कारोबार सँभालने के लिए कोलकाता आ गये। 1914 में उनका सम्पर्क महामना मदनमोहन मालवीय जी से हुआ और वे हिन्दू महासभा में सक्रिय हो गये। 1915 में वे हिन्दू महासभा के मन्त्री बने।
कोलकाता में उनका सम्पर्क पंडित गोविन्द नारायण मिश्र, बालमुकुन्द गुप्त, अम्बिका प्रसाद वाजपेयी, झाबरमल शर्मा, लक्ष्मण नारायण गर्दे, बाबूराव विष्णु पराड़कर जैसे सम्पादक एवं विद्वान साहित्यकारों से हुआ। अनुशीलन समिति के सदस्य के नाते उनके सम्बन्ध डा. हेडगेवार, अरविन्द घोष, सुरेन्द्रनाथ बनर्जी, विपिनचन्द्र पाल, ब्रह्मबान्धव उपाध्याय आदि स्वन्तत्रता सेनानियों तथा क्रान्तिकारियों से लगातार बना रहता था। जब वे रोडा कम्पनी में कार्यरत थे, तो उन्होंने विदेशों से आयी रिवाल्वरों की एक पूरी खेप क्रान्तिकारियों को सौंप दी। इस पर उन्हें राजद्रोह के आरोप में दो साल के लिए अलीपुर जेल में बन्द कर दिया गया।
1918 में भाई जी व्यापार के लिए मुम्बई आ गये। यहाँ सेठ जयदयाल गोयन्दका के सहयोग से अगस्त, 1926 में धर्मप्रधान विचारों पर आधारित ‘कल्याण’ नामक मासिक पत्रिका प्रारम्भ की। कुछ वर्ष उपरान्त गोरखपुर आकर उन्होंने गीताप्रेस की स्थापना की। इसके बाद ‘कल्याण’ का प्रकाशन गोरखपुर से होने लगा। 1933 में श्री चिम्मनलाल गोस्वामी के सम्पादन में अंग्रेजी में ‘कल्याण कल्पतरू’ मासिक पत्रिका प्रारम्भ हुई।
ये सभी पत्रिकाएँ आज भी बिना विज्ञापन के निकल रही हैं। गीताप्रेस ने बच्चों, युवाओं, महिलाओं, वृद्धों आदि के लिए बहुत कम कीमत पर संस्कारक्षम साहित्य प्रकाशित कर नया उदाहरण प्रस्तुत किया।
हिन्दू धर्मग्रन्थों में पाठ भेद तथा त्रुटियों से भाई जी को बहुत कष्ट होता था। अतः उन्होंने तुलसीकृत श्री रामचरितमानस की जितनी हस्तलिखित प्रतियाँ मिल सकीं, एकत्र कीं और विद्वानों को बैठाकर ‘मानस पीयूष’ नामक उनका शुद्ध पाठ, भावार्थ एवं टीकाएँ तैयार करायीं। फिर इन्हें कई आकारों में प्रकाशित किया, जिससे हर कोई उससे लाभान्वित हो सके। मुद्रण की भूल को कलम से शुद्ध करने की परम्परा भी उन्होंने गीता प्रेस से प्रारम्भ की।
उन्होंने श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता के भी अनेक संस्करण निकाले। इसके साथ ही 11 उपनिषदों के शङ्कर भाष्य, वाल्मीकि रामायण, अध्यात्म रामायण, महाभारत, विष्णु पुराण आदि धर्मग्रन्थों को लागत मूल्य पर छापकर उन्होंने हिन्दू समाज की अनुपम सेवा की। वे ऐसी व्यवस्था भी कर गये, जिससे उनके बाद भी यह कार्य चलता रहे। 22 मार्च, 1971 को उनका शरीरान्त हुआ।

Shri Hanuman Prasad Poddar (Brother ji), who is credited for providing Hindu scriptures all over the world in pure text and printing at very low cost, was born on September 17, 1892 in Shillong. His father was Shri Bhimraj and mother was Smt. Rikhibai. His mother died at the age of two.
At the age of only 13, Bhai ji, inspired by the break-up, took a Swadeshi Vrat and then followed it for the rest of his life. Not only he, but his wife also observed this fast and burnt Holi of all foreign things in the house. Brother had three marriages. The life of the first two wives was not long; But the third wife supported him throughout his life.
In 1912, he came to Kolkata to handle his ancestral business. In 1914, he came in contact with Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya and became active in the Hindu Mahasabha. In 1915 he became the minister of Hindu Mahasabha.
In Kolkata, he came in contact with editors and scholars like Pandit Govind Narayan Mishra, Balmukund Gupta, Ambika Prasad Bajpai, Jhabarmal Sharma, Laxman Narayan Garde, Baburao Vishnu Paradkar. As a member of Anushilan Samiti, he had constant relations with freedom fighters and revolutionaries like Dr. Hedgewar, Arvind Ghosh, Surendranath Banerjee, Bipin Chandra Pal, Brahmabandhav Upadhyay etc. When he was working in the Roda Company, he handed over a whole consignment of revolvers from abroad to the revolutionaries. On this he was imprisoned in Alipore Jail for two years on charges of sedition.
In 1918, Bhaiji came to Mumbai for business. Here in August, 1926, in association with Seth Jaidayal Goyandka, started a monthly magazine named ‘Kalyan’ based on religious ideas. After a few years he came to Gorakhpur and founded Gita Press. After this ‘Kalyan’ started being published from Gorakhpur. In 1933, under the editing of Shri Chimanlal Goswami, a monthly magazine ‘Kalyan Kalpataru’ was started in English.
All these magazines are still coming out without advertisement. GitaPress set a new example by publishing sacramental literature for children, youth, women, old age etc. at very low cost.
Bhai ji used to suffer a lot due to text differences and errors in Hindu scriptures. Therefore, he collected as many handwritten copies of Tulsikrit Shri Ramcharitmanas as he could find, and made the scholars sit down to prepare their pure text, meaning and commentaries called ‘Manas Piyush’. Then published these in multiple sizes so that everyone could benefit from it. He also started the tradition of correcting the mistake of printing with a pen from Gita Press.
He also brought out several versions of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. Along with this, he did an incomparable service to the Hindu society by printing Shankara Bhashya of 11 Upanishads, Valmiki Ramayana, Adhyatma Ramayana, Mahabharata, Vishnu Purana etc. at cost price. They also made such arrangements so that even after them this work would continue. He died on 22 March 1971.
