गोपाष्टमी विशेष   जबालापुत्र सत्यकामको गोसेवासे ब्रह्मज्ञान कथा

            एक सदाचारिणी ब्राह्मणी थी, उसका नाम था जबाला। उसका एक पुत्र था सत्यकाम। जब वह विद्याध्ययन करने योग्य हुआ, तब एक दिन अपनी मातासे कहने लगा— ‘माँ। मैं गुरुकुलमें निवास करना चाहता हूँ; गुरुजी जब मुझसे नाम और गोत्र पूछेंगे तो मैं अपना कौन गोत्र बतलाऊँगा ?’ इसपर उसने कहा कि ‘पुत्र ! मुझे तेरे पितासे गोत्र पूछनेका अवसर नहीं प्राप्त हुआ; क्योंकि उन दिनों मैं सदा अतिथियोंकी सेवामें ही व्यस्त रहती थी। अतएव जब आचार्य तुमसे गोत्रादि पूछें, तब तुम इतना ही कह देना कि मैं ‘जबाला’ का पुत्र ‘सत्यकाम’ हूँ।’ माताकी आज्ञा लेकर सत्यकाम हारिद्रुमत गौतमऋषिके यहाँ गया और बोला— ‘मैं श्रीमान्‌के यहाँ ब्रह्मचर्यपूर्वक सेवा करने आया हूँ।’ आचार्यने पूछा— ‘वत्स ! तुम्हारा गोत्र क्या है ?’

            सत्यकामने कहा— ‘भगवन् ! मेरा गोत्र क्या है, इसे मैं नहीं जानता। मैं ‘सत्यकाम जाबाल’ हूँ, बस, इतना ही इस सम्बन्धमें जानता हूँ।’ इसपर गौतमने कहा— ‘वत्स ! ब्राह्मणको छोड़कर दूसरा कोई भी इस प्रकार सरल भावसे सच्ची बात नहीं कह सकता। जा, थोड़ी समिधा ले आ। मैं तेरा उपनयन संस्कार करूँगा।’

            सत्यकामका उपनयन करके चार सौ दुर्बल गायोंको उसके सामने लाकर गौतमने कहा— ‘तू इन्हें वनमें चराने ले जा। जबतक इनकी संख्या एक हजार न हो जाय, इन्हें वापस न लाना।’ उसने कहा— ‘भगवन् ! इनकी संख्या एक हजार हुए बिना मैं न लौटूंगा।’

            सत्यकाम गायोंको लेकर वनमें गया। वहाँ वह कुटिया बनाकर रहने लगा और तन-मनसे गौओंकी सेवा करने लगा। धीरे-धीरे गायोंकी संख्या पूरी एक हजार हो गयी। तब एक दिन एक वृषभ ( साँड़ ) ने सत्यकामके पास आकर कहा— ‘वत्स ! हमारी संख्या एक हजार हो गयी है, अब तू हमें आचार्यकुलमें पहुँचा दे। साथ ही ब्रह्मतत्त्वके सम्बन्धमें तुझे एक चरणका मैं उपदेश देता हूँ। वह ब्रह्म ‘प्रकाशस्वरूप’ है, इसका दूसरा चरण तुझे अग्नि बतलायेंगे।’

            सत्यकाम गौओंको हाँककर आगे चला। सन्ध्या होनेपर उसने गायोंको रोक दिया और उन्हें जल पिलाकर वहीं रात्रि-निवासकी व्यवस्था की। तत्पश्चात् काष्ठ लाकर उसने अग्नि जलायी। अग्निने कहा— ‘सत्यकाम ! मैं तुझे ब्रह्मका द्वितीय पाद बतलाता हूँ; वह ‘अनन्त’ लक्षणात्मक है, अगला उपदेश तुझे हंस करेगा।’

            दूसरे दिन सायंकाल सत्यकाम पुनः किसी सुन्दर जलाशयके किनारे ठहर गया और उसने गौओंके रात्रि-निवासकी व्यवस्था की। इतनेमें ही एक हंस ऊपरसे उड़ता हुआ आया और सत्यकामके पास बैठकर बोला—’सत्यकाम !’ सत्यकामने कहा— ‘भगवन् ! क्या आज्ञा है ?’ हंसने कहा— ‘मैं तुझे ब्रह्मके तृतीय पादका उपदेश कर रहा हूँ, वह ‘ज्योतिष्मान्’ है, चतुर्थ पादका उपदेश तुझे मुद्ग ( जलकुक्कुट ) करेगा।’

            दूसरे दिन सायंकाल सत्यकामने एक वटवृक्षके नीचे गौओंके रात्रिनिवासकी व्यवस्था की। अग्नि जलाकर वह बैठ ही रहा था कि एक जलमुर्गने आकर पुकारा और कहा— ‘वत्स ! मैं तुझे ब्रह्मके चतुर्थ पादका उपदेश करता हूँ, वह ‘आयतनस्वरूप’ है।’

            इस प्रकार उन-उन देवताओंसे सच्चिदानन्दघन- लक्षण परमात्माका बोध प्राप्तकर एक सहस्र गौओंको लेकर सत्यकाम आचार्य गौतमके यहाँ पहुँचा। आचार्यने उसकी चिन्तारहित तेजपूर्ण दिव्य मुखकान्तिको देखकर कहा— ‘वत्स ! तू ब्रह्मज्ञानीके सदृश दिखलायी पड़ता है।’ सत्यकामने कहा— ‘भगवन् ! मुझे मनुष्येतरोंसे विद्या मिली है। मैंने सुना है कि आपके सदृश आचार्यके द्वारा प्राप्त हुई विद्या ही श्रेष्ठ होती है, अतएव मुझे आप ही पूर्णरूपसे उपदेश कीजिये ।’ आचार्य बड़े प्रसन्न हुए और बोले— ‘वत्स ! तूने जो प्राप्त किया है, वही ब्रह्मतत्त्व है।’ — तदनन्तर आचार्यने उस सम्पूर्ण तत्त्वका पुनः ठीक उसी प्रकार उपदेश किया।

There was a virtuous Brahmin, her name was Jabala. He had a son, Satyakam. When he became capable of studying, one day he started saying to his mother – ‘Mother. I want to reside in Gurukul; When Guruji asks me my name and Gotra, which Gotra will I tell?’ On this he said, ‘Son! I did not get the opportunity to ask your father about his Gotra; Because in those days I was always busy serving the guests. Therefore, when Acharya asks you about your Gotra, then just tell me that I am ‘Satyakaam’, son of ‘Jabala’. Taking mother’s permission, Satyakam Haridrumat went to Gautam Rishi and said – ‘I have come to serve the Lord in a celibate manner.’ Acharya asked- ‘Vats! What is your Gotra?’

Satyakam said – ‘Lord! I don’t know what my Gotra is. I am ‘Satyakam Jabal’, that’s all I know in this regard.’ On this Gautam said – ‘Vatsa! Except the Brahmin, no one else can say the truth in such a simple manner. Go, get some Samidha. I will perform your Upanayana ceremony.

After reading Satyakama Upanayan, Gautama brought four hundred weak cows in front of him and said – ‘You take them to the forest to graze. Do not bring them back until their number reaches one thousand. He said- ‘Lord! I will not return until their number reaches one thousand.

Satyakam went to the forest with the cows. There he built a hut and started living there and started serving the cows with all his heart and soul. Gradually the number of cows reached one thousand. Then one day a Vrishabha (bull) came to Satyakam and said – ‘Vatsa! Our number has increased to one thousand, now you send us to Acharyakul. Also, I advise you one step regarding Brahmatattva. That Brahma is the ‘form of light’, its second phase will be shown to you as fire.

Satyakam went forward to the cows. When he was evening, he stopped the cows and drank them and arranged for the night-dwelling. Then he brought the wood and burned the fire. The fire said, ‘Truthless! I tell you the second leg of Brahma; He is characterized by ‘infinite’, the next precept will make you swan.

Next day in the evening, Satyakam again stopped at the bank of a beautiful pond and made arrangements for the cows to stay for the night. Meanwhile, a swan came flying from above and sat near Satyakam and said – ‘Satyakam!’ Satyakam said – ‘Lord! What is the order?’ Hanse said – ‘I am teaching you the third pada of Brahma, he is ‘Jyotishman’, the fourth pada will be preached to you by Mudga (waterfowl).’

Next day evening, Satyakam arranged for the cows to stay for the night under a banyan tree. He was sitting after lighting the fire when a waterfowl came and called and said – ‘Watts! I preach to you the fourth pada of Brahma, it is ‘Aytanaswarupa’.

Thus, by attaining the realization of the Sachchidanandaghan-symptoms from those gods, he reached the truth of the truthful Acharya Gautama with one thousand cows. The teacher, seeing the divine face of his worry, his worry, said— ‘Vats! You have seen the sight of the Brahmajnani. Satyakamane said: ‘Lord! I have received knowledge from human beings. I have heard that the knowledge obtained by the teacher like you is superior, therefore you are the only one who preach me completely. The teacher was very happy and said, ‘Vats! The one that you have attained is the Brahma Tattva. — Then the Acharya preached the entire essence in the same way. Chhandogya0
