यह कहानी महाभारत के वनवास काल से जुड़ी है। इसमें बताया गया है कि एक दिन भोजन का समय हो गया था, लेकिन अर्जुन को कहीं भी शिवजी का मंदिर नहीं मिला। अर्जुन शिवजी की पूजा किए बिना भोजन नहीं करते थे। दूसरी ओर, भीम को बहुत जोर की भूख लगी थी। सभी भाई मंदिर ढूंढ़ रहे थे, लेकिन कोई सफलता नहीं मिली।
तभी भीम को एक ताड़ी के पेड़ का तना दिखा जो शिवलिंग के आकार जैसा था। भीम ने वह तना ज़मीन में गाड़ कर उस पर फूल-पत्ते आदि चढ़ाए और अर्जुन से कहा कि शिवजी की प्रतिमा मिल गई, जल्दी पूजन करो क्योंकि उसे बहुत भूख लगी है। अर्जुन ने उस तने की ही शिवलिंग मानकर श्रद्धापूर्वक पूजा-अर्चना की, इसके बाद सभी भाइयों ने भोजन ग्रहण किया।
भोजन समाप्त करने के बाद भीम हंसने लगा । यह देख युधिष्ठिर बोले – “क्यों ! क्या हुआ अनुज ? क्यों हंस रहे हो ?”
हँसते हँसते भीम बोला – “ अर्जुन तुम्हे पता है, जिसे तुम शिवाजी समझ कर पूजा किये वो क्या है ?”
पुरे विश्वास से अर्जुन बोला – “ शिवाजी है और क्या है ?”
जोर से हँसते हुए भीम बोला – “वो ताड़ी के वृक्ष का तना है ! आस – पास कोई प्रतिमा न देख मैंने उसे ही जमीन में गाड़ कर फुल – पत्ते चढ़ा दिए ।”
लेकिन ये बात अर्जुन मानने को तैयार नहीं था । तभी युधिष्ठिर बोले – “ चलो चलकर देख लेते है ।”
अपनी करतूत के घमंड में भीम आगे – आगे चला और उसे उखाड़ने लगा । हजार हाथियों का बल रखने वाले भीम ने अपनी पूरी ताकत लगा दी लेकिन उसे हिला भी न सका । शिवाजी का मजाक बनाने चला था । लेकिन खुद का मजाक बनता देख, लज्जा से अपना सिर झुका लिया ।
यह देख युधिष्ठिर मुस्कुराते हुए बोले – “ प्रिय अनुज ! हो सकता है, तुम्हारी बात सही हो सकती है , लेकिन अर्जुन एक निष्ठावान साधक है । उसने शिवलिंग की श्रृद्धा भक्ति से उसका पूजन किया तो ताड़ी के वृक्ष के शिवलिंग बन जाने में कोई आश्चर्य नहीं ।
This story is related to the exile period of Mahabharata. It has been told that it was time for food one day, but Arjun did not find the temple of Shiva anywhere. Arjun did not eat food without worshiping Shiva. On the other hand, Bhima was very hungry. All the brothers were looking for temples, but did not get any success.
Then Bhima saw the stem of a toddy tree which was like the shape of the Shivling. Bhima buried that stem in the ground and offered flowers and leaves etc. on it and told Arjuna that the statue of Shiva was found, worship quickly because he is very hungry. Arjuna, considering that trunk as a Shivalinga, worshiped devoutly, after which all the brothers took food.
After finishing the meal, Bhima started laughing. Seeing this, Yudhishthira said – “Why! What happened Anuj? Why are you laughing?”
Laughing while laughing, Bhima said – “Arjuna, do you know, what is you worshiping as Shivaji?”
Arjun said with full faith – “What is Shivaji and what is?”
Laughing loudly, Bhima said – “He is the trunk of the toddy tree! Do not see any statue around, I buried it in the ground and offered full leaves.”
But this thing was not ready to accept Arjuna. Then Yudhishthira said – “Let’s look at it.”
In the pride of his handiwork, Bhima went ahead and started to uproot it. Bhima, who emphasized a thousand elephants, put his full strength but could not even shake it. Shivaji went to make fun of. But seeing myself became a joke, I bowed his head with shame.
Seeing this, Yudhishthira smiled and said – “Dear Anuj! May be, you may be right, but Arjuna is a loyal seeker. He worshiped Shivalinga with devotion, then it is not surprising to become the Shivling of the toddy tree.
