आज कितने लोग इन्हें जानते हैं?
बात आज से 53 वर्ष पहले की है। चंडीगढ़ में झील के पास सड़क के किनारे लोक निर्माण विभाग (भवन एवं मार्ग) का एक स्टोर होता था जहाँ पर तारकोल के भरे और खाली ड्रम रखे जाते थे। उस स्टोर के पास ही कूड़े का ढेर भी पड़ा रहता था।
वहाँ एक चतुर्थ श्रेणी कर्मचारी काम करता था जिसका नाम था नेक चंद। उस कूड़े के ढेर को देख कर उसके मन में आया कि क्यों न इस कूड़े का सदुपयोग किया जाये। बस उस पर तो जैसे धुन ही सवार हो गई और उसने कूडे़ से प्लास्टिक, पत्थर, चीनी मिट्टी के बर्तनों के टुकड़े इत्यादि बीनने शुरू कर दिये।
अब उसका एक ही जनून था कि ड्यूटी के समय के बाद चीनी मिट्टी से मूर्तियां बनाना और उन पर कचरे से बीने गए अवशेष आवश्यकतानुसार चिपकाना। तारकोल के ड्रमों की ओट में नेक चंद महीनों तक इसी काम में लगा रहा और किसी को इस की ख़बर तक नहीं हुई।
एक दिन कार्यालय के बड़े अधिकारी उस स्टोर का निरीक्षण करने आये तो उनकी नजर उन मूर्तियों पर पड़ी। बस फिर क्या था, मामला विभाग के वरिष्ठतम अधिकारियों के संज्ञान में लाया गया। बाद में वह स्थान रॉक गार्डन के नाम से पूरे विश्व में प्रसिद्ध हुआ और एक मामूली कर्मचारी नेक चंद ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर नाम कमाया।
1984 में नेक चंद को पदम श्री पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।
12-6-2015 को उन्हीं नेक चंद का 90 वर्ष की आयु में देहांत हो गया था। दुनिया में भारत का नाम चमकाने वाले इस भारत माँ के इस सपूत को प्रणाम और श्रद्धांजलि।
इस तरह एक चतुर्थ श्रेणी कर्मचारी नेकचंद पद्मश्री नेकचंद बन गया था।
How many people know him today?
It is about 53 years back from today. In Chandigarh, there used to be a roadside store of the Public Works Department (Buildings and Roads) near the lake where filled and empty drums of coal tar were kept. There was also a pile of garbage lying near that store.
There used to be a class IV employee named Nek Chand. Seeing that pile of garbage, it came to his mind that why not put this garbage to good use. He just got carried away and started picking plastic, stones, pieces of porcelain etc. from the garbage.
Now his only passion was to make idols out of porcelain after duty time and pasting them as per requirement. Nek was engaged in this work for a few months in the cover of coal tar drums and no one even came to know about it.
One day when the senior officials of the office came to inspect the store, their eyes fell on those idols. What was it then, the matter was brought to the notice of the senior most officers of the department. Later the place became famous all over the world as Rock Garden and Nek Chand, a humble worker, earned international fame.
Nek Chand was awarded the Padma Shri award in 1984.
The same Nek Chand died on 12-6-2015 at the age of 90 years. Salute and tribute to this son of Mother India, who made India proud in the world.
This is how Nekchand, a Class IV employee, became Padmashree Nekchand.
