सन् 1656 की बात है, शिवाजी महाराज रायगढ़ से चलकर सताराके किलेमें आकर निवास कर रहे थे। एक दिन वे वहीं राजवाड़ेमें बैठे थे कि नीचेसे ‘जय जय रघुवीर समर्थ!’ की आवाज आयी।
शिवाजी तत्काल नीचे उतर आये। देखा, सामने साक्षात् गुरुदेव भिक्षाकी झोली लिये खड़े हैं। उन्होंने प्रणाम किया और भिक्षा लानेके लिये वे भीतर आये।
भिक्षाके लिये अन्न-वस्त्र, सोना-मोती, मणि माणिक्य- जो भी उठाते, उन्हें थोड़ा ही जँचता । एकाएक उन्हें कल्पना सूझी। कलम-दावात ले कागजपर कुछ लिखा और उसको लेकर बाहर आये। समर्थने झोली पसारी और शिवाने उसमें वह चिट्ठी डाल दी।
समर्थने कहा- ‘शिवबा ! अरे, हम तुम्हारे यहाँ अच्छे-अच्छे धान्यकी आशासे आये थे। पर तुम कागजका टुकड़ा हमारी झोलीमें डालकर यह क्या मजाक कर रहे हो मुट्ठीभर आटा डालते तो उसकी रोटी भी बनाकर खा सकते थे।’
‘महाराज ! झोलीमें मैंने भिक्षा ही डाली और कुछनहीं, क्षमा करें।’ शिवाने विनयके साथ कहा। समर्थने उद्धवसे चिट्ठी निकाल पढ़नेके लिये कहा। उद्धव चिट्ठी पढ़ने लगा
‘आजतक कमाया हुआ सारा राज्य स्वामीके चरणों में समर्पित । ‘ – शिवराज और यह राजकीय मुद्रा । समर्थने कहा-‘ और शिवबा ! अब तुम क्या करोगे ?’ ‘श्रीकी सेवा, सेवकको क्या आज्ञा है ?”
‘झोली उठाओ और चलो मेरे साथ भीख माँगने ।’ शिवराज भिक्षुकको ले समर्थने गाँवभर भिक्षा माँगी। फिर नदीके तीरपर आकर रसोई बनायी गयी और सबने भोजन किया।
समर्थने कहा- शिवबा ! हम वैरागियोंको राज्यसे क्या काम। तुम्हीं इसे सँभालो।’
शिवाजी तैयार ही न होते थे। समर्थने अपनी पादुकाएँ और झोलीका भगवा वस्त्र ध्वजके लिये दे अपने प्रतिनिधिरूपमें शिवाको राज्य चलानेका आदेश दिया। शिवाजीने जीवनभर उसे निभाया।

It is a matter of year 1656, Shivaji Maharaj was living in the fort of Satara after walking from Raigarh. One day he was sitting there in the Rajwada that ‘Jai Jai Raghuveer Samarth!’ The voice came.
Shivaji immediately came down. Saw, Gurudev is standing in front of him with a beggar’s bag. He bowed down and came inside to bring alms.
Food-clothes, gold-pearls, gems- whatever they pick up for alms, only a little suits them. Suddenly he got an idea. Wrote something on the paper with pen and drink and came out with it. Samartha spread her bag and Shiva put that letter in it.
Support said – ‘Shivba! Arey, we had come to your place with the hope of getting good grain. But what are you kidding by putting a piece of paper in our pocket, if we had put a handful of flour, we could have made bread out of it and eaten it.’
‘King ! I only put alms in the bag and nothing else, sorry.’ Shiva said with Vinay. Samartha asked Uddhav to take out the letter and read it. Uddhav started reading the letter
‘The entire kingdom earned till date is dedicated at the feet of the Lord. ‘ – Shivraj and this state currency. Support said-‘ And Shivba! What will you do now ?’ ‘Shri’s service, what is the order for the servant?’
‘Take up your bag and come beg with me.’ Shivraj begged for alms in the whole village in support of the beggar. Then the kitchen was made on the banks of the river and everyone had food.
Where did you support – Shivba! What use do we recluses have with the state? You handle it.’
Shivaji was not ready at all. Giving his padukas and jholika saffron cloth for the flag, he ordered Shiva to run the kingdom as his representative. Shivaji followed it throughout his life.
