हाड़-मांसकी देह और ‘मैं’

महर्षि रमणकी आयु तब सत्रह वर्षकी रही होगी। एक बार वे अपने काकाके घरकी छतपर सो रहे थे कि उन्हें महसूस हुआ कि उनकी मृत्यु-वेला आ गयी है। वे गम्भीरतापूर्वक सोचने लगे कि यदि ऐसा हुआ तो उनका शरीर नष्ट होगा, या उसके अन्दर वास करनेवाले ‘मैं’ का नाश होगा? किंतु इसका उत्तर मिलेगा भी कैसे? इसका अनुभव तो उन्हें था ही नहीं।
आखिर वे उत्तान लेट गये और हाथ-पैर फैलाकर सोचने लगे कि बस अब उन्हें मृत्यु ग्रसने ही वाली है। उनकी मृत्यु होनेपर लोग उनके मृत शरीरको श्मशान में ले जायँगे। जहाँ उसकी राख हो जायगी। उनके मनमें फिर प्रश्न उठा, ‘क्या, ‘मैं’ उस अवस्थामें भी रहेगा,
या वह भी जलेगा ?’ इसका उत्तर उनकी अन्तरात्माने दिया ‘मृत्यु शरीरको मार सकती है, ‘मैं’ को नहीं; क्योंकि वह अविनश्वर है, मृत्युकी सीमासे परे है, अमर है। इसलिये हाड़-मांसवाली इस देहका मोह त्यागना ही चाहिये।’ और उस उत्तरसे उनके अन्तरके अज्ञानरूपी अहंकारका नाश हो गया। अविद्याका अन्त हो गया और उन्हें आत्मपरिचय हो गया। इस स्थितिमें भला मृत्यु कैसे पास आ सकती थी, उसपर उन्होंने विजय जो प्राप्त कर ली थी। वे उठ बैठे और उसी समय घरसे निकलकर अरुणाचलके मंदिरकी ओर निकल पड़े, जहाँ उन्होंने घोर तपस्या की और इसके फलस्वरूप पहले वे ‘रमण स्वामी’ और बादमें महर्षि रमण कहलाये ।

Maharishi Raman must have been seventeen years old then. Once he was sleeping on the roof of his uncle’s house when he realized that his death-time had come. They started thinking seriously that if this happens, will their body be destroyed, or will the ‘I’ living inside it be destroyed? But how will it be answered? He didn’t have the experience of this at all.
At last, Uttan lay down and spread his arms and legs and started thinking that he was about to die. After his death, people would take his dead body to the crematorium. Where his ashes will be. Again the question arose in his mind, ‘Will the ‘I’ remain in that state also?
Or will he also burn?’ His conscience answered this, ‘Death can kill the body, not ‘I’; Because he is indestructible, beyond the limits of death, immortal. That’s why one should give up the attachment of this flesh and bone body. And with that answer the ego in the form of ignorance within them was destroyed. Avidya came to an end and he got self-introduction. In this situation, how could death come near, he had achieved victory over it. He got up and at the same time left the house and went to the temple of Arunachala, where he did severe penance and as a result he was first called ‘Raman Swami’ and later Maharishi Raman.
