नामदेवका गौके लिये प्राणदान

संत ज्ञानेश्वर और संत नामदेव महाराज तीर्थ यात्रा करते-करते हस्तिनापुर (दिल्ली) पहुँचे। संतोंके आने से दिल्लीमें नामदेव कीर्तनकी धूम मच गयी। हजारोंकी संख्या में लोग जुटते और कीर्तन सुनकर आनन्दमग्न हो जाते।।

यह बात बादशाहके कानोंतक पहुँची नामदेव के कीर्तनकी प्रचण्ड ध्वनिसे दिल्लीकी गली गली गूंजती देख उसके क्रोधका पारावार न रहा। एक दिन रातमें सोता हुआ वह इस प्रचण्ड कोलाहलसे जाग उठा । तत्काल घोड़ेपर सवार हो वह कीर्तन स्थलपर पहुँचा उसने आँखों देखा कि लाखोंकी भीड़ वहाँ जुटी है।

बादशाह लौट आया। उसने इस काफिर नामदेवको खूब मजा चखानेका निश्चय किया। सोचा-हिंदू गायकी कुर्बानीसे ठिकाने आते हैं। अतः ठीक कीर्तन के समय उसीके सामने यह किया जाय और नामदेवकी संतई देखी जाय।

दूसरे दिन कीर्तनके समय उसीके सामने बादशाहने अपने हाथों गोहत्या करके नामदेवसे कहा-‘यदि तुम सच्चे फकीर हो तो इसे जिलाओ तभी हिंदूधर्मपरतुम्हारा प्रेम माना जायगा। नहीं जिला सकोगे तो इसे ढोंग मानकर तुम्हारा भी सिर उड़ा दूँगा।’

गोहत्यासे नामदेवका हृदय पानी-पानी हो गया। वे भगवान्को मनाने लगे–’प्रभो! जल्दी आओ और सनातन-धर्मकी तथा इस देवताकी रक्षा करो।’ नामदेवकी आँखोंसे आँसुओंकी धारा बह चली। गो-माताका सिर गोदमें लेकर वे बड़ी ही करुणासे भगवान्की गुहार करने लगे।

शोक करते-करते नामदेवको मूर्छा आ गयी और वे संज्ञाहीन हो गिर पड़े। उनके प्रिय परमात्माको दया आयी। वे वहाँ प्रकट हुए और नामदेवको जगाने लगे – ‘नामा! उठो, प्यारी गायकी रक्षाके निमित्त प्राण देनेवाले तुम धन्य हो। मैं तुम्हारे सहायतार्थ आ गया हूँ। देखो, गाय तुम्हें चाट रही है, उठो ।’

नामदेव पुनः संज्ञायुक्त हुए। उन्होंने आँखें खोलीं। सचमुच गाय उन्हें चाट रही थी। बादशाहने नामदेवके चरणोंपर सिर धरकर क्षमा माँगी।

Saint Dnyaneshwar and Saint Namdev Maharaj reached Hastinapur (Delhi) while on pilgrimage. Due to the arrival of saints, Namdev Kirtan became famous in Delhi. Thousands of people gathered and became happy listening to the kirtan.
This matter reached the ears of the king. His anger knew no bounds when he saw the loud sound of Namdev’s kirtan reverberating in every street of Delhi. One day while sleeping in the night, he woke up from this tremendous commotion. Immediately riding a horse he reached the place of kirtan and saw with his own eyes that a crowd of lakhs had gathered there.
The king returned. He decided to make this infidel Namdev taste a lot of fun. Thought- Hindus come to places by the sacrifice of singing. Therefore, this should be done right in front of him at the time of Kirtan and Namdev’s Santai should be seen.
On the second day, at the time of kirtan, the king slaughtered a cow in his own hands and said to Namdev – ‘If you are a true fakir, revive it, only then your love for Hinduism will be considered. If you can’t wake me up, I’ll blow your head off considering it as a pretence.’
Namdev’s heart became watery due to cow slaughter. They started persuading God – ‘Lord! Come quickly and protect Sanatan-Dharma and this deity.’ Tears flowed from Namdev’s eyes. Taking the head of mother cow in his lap, he started praying to God with great compassion.
While mourning, Namdev fainted and fell unconscious. His beloved God had mercy. They appeared there and started waking up Namdev – ‘Nama! Wake up, you are blessed who gave your life for the protection of my beloved singing. I have come to help you. Look, the cow is licking you, get up.’
Namdev again became feminine. He opened his eyes. Really the cow was licking them. The king begged for forgiveness by placing his head at the feet of Namdev.
