Sardar Patel’s devotion to duty
Sardar Patel was defending a criminal case in the court. The matter was serious, his slightest carelessness could get the client hanged. He was giving his arguments before the judge, when a person came and gave him a telegram. He opened the telegram and read it and kept it in his pocket. After the proceedings of the case were over, the fellow lawyer asked Sardar Patel – whose wire was it? He said – My wife died, she was informed. The fellow lawyer said – such a big incident happened and you were engaged in cross-examination. Patel replied – what else would he do? The wife has gone. Would you let the client go too? My slightest impatience could have sent him to the gallows.
