अन्यायका कुफल

एक व्यापारीके दो पुत्र थे। एकका नाम था धर्मबुद्धि, दूसरेका दुष्टबुद्धि । वे दोनों एक बार व्यापार करने विदेश गये और वहाँसे दो हजार अशर्फियाँ कमा लाये। अपने नगरमें आकर सुरक्षाके लिये उन्हें किसी वृक्षके नीचे गाड़ दिया और केवल सौ अशर्फियोंको बाँटकर काम चलाने लगे।

एक बार दुष्टबुद्धि चुपके उस वृक्षके नीचेसे सारी अशर्फियाँ निकाल लाया और बुरे कामोंमें उसने उनको खर्च कर डाला। एक महीना बीत जानेपर वह धर्मबुद्धिके पास गया और बोला- ‘आर्य! चलो, अशर्फियोंको हमलोग बाँट लें; क्योंकि मेरे यहाँ खर्च अधिक है।’ उसकी बात मानकर जब धर्मबुद्धि उस स्थानपर गया और जमीन खोदी तो वहाँ कुछ भी न मिला। जब उस गड्ढेमें कुछ न दीखा तब दुष्टबुद्धि धर्मबुद्धिसे कहा- ‘मालूम होता है तुम्हीं सब अशर्फियाँ निकालकर ले गये हो, अतः मेरे हिस्सेकी आधी अशर्फियाँ अब तुम्हें देनी पड़ेंगी।’ उसने कहा- ‘नहीं भाई! मैं तो नहीं ले गया; तुम्हीं ले गये होगे।’ इस प्रकार दोनोंमें झगड़ा होने लगा। इसी बीच दुष्टबुद्धि अपना सिर फोड़कर राजाके यहाँ पहुँचा और उन दोनोंने अपना अपना पक्ष राजाको सुनाया। उन दोनोंकी बातें सुनकर राजा किसी निर्णयपर नहीं पहुँच सका ।राजपुरुषोंने दिनभर उन्हें वहीं रखा। अन्तमें दुष्टबुद्धिने कहा कि ‘वह वृक्ष ही इसका साक्षी है और कहता है कि यह धर्मबुद्धि सारी अशर्फियाँ ले गया है।’ इसपर अधिकारी बड़े विस्मित हुए और बोले कि ‘प्रातः काल | हमलोग चलकर वृक्षसे पूछेंगे।’ इसके बाद जमानत देकर दोनों भाई भी घर गये।

इधर दुष्टबुद्धिने अपनी सारी स्थिति अपने पिताको समझायी और उसे पर्याप्त धन देकर अपनी ओर मिला लिया और कहा कि तुम ‘वृक्षके कोटरमें छिपकर बोलना।’ वह रातमें ही जाकर उस वृक्षके कोटरमें बैठ गया। प्रातः काल दोनों भाई व्यवहाराधिपतियोंके साथ उस स्थानपर गये। वहाँ उन्होंने पूछा कि ‘अशर्फियोंको कौन ले गया है ?’ कोटरस्थ पिताने कहा – ‘धर्मबुद्धि’ इस असम्भव आश्चर्यकर घटनाको देख-सुनकर चतुर अधिकारियोंने सोचा कि अवश्य ही दुष्टबुद्धिने यहाँ किसीको छिपा रखा है। उन लोगोंने कोटरमें आग लगा दी। जब उसमेंसे निकलकर उसका पिता कूदने लगा, तब पृथ्वीपर गिरकर वह मर गया। इसे देखकर राजपुरुषोंने सारा रहस्य जान लिया और धर्मबुद्धिको पाँच सौ अशर्फियाँ दिला दीं। धर्मबुद्धिका सत्कार भी किया और दुष्टबुद्धिके हाथ-पैर काटकर उसको निर्वासित कर दिया। जा0 श0 (कथासरित्सागर)

A businessman had two sons. One’s name was Dharmabuddhi, the other’s evil intellect. Once both of them went abroad for business and earned two thousand Ashrifias from there. After coming to his city, he buried them under a tree for safety and started working by distributing only hundred Ashrafis.
Once the evil mind secretly took out all the Asharfis from under that tree and spent them in bad deeds. After a month passed, he went to Dharmabuddhi and said- ‘Arya! Come on, let us distribute the Ashrafis; Because my expenses are more here. After listening to him, when Dharmabuddhi went to that place and dug the ground, nothing was found there. When nothing was seen in that pit, then the evil-minded said to Dharmabuddhi- ‘It seems that you have taken out all the Asharfis, so now you will have to give half of my share of Asharfis.’ He said- ‘No brother! I didn’t take it; You must have taken it.’ Thus a quarrel started between the two. Meanwhile, the evil-minded reached the king’s place after breaking his head and both of them told their side to the king. The king could not reach any decision after listening to both of them. The royal men kept them there for the whole day. In the end, the evil-minded said that ‘that tree itself is its witness and says that this religious-minded has taken away all the Asharfis’. The officers were very surprised at this and said, ‘Morning. We will go and ask the tree. After this, both the brothers also went home after giving bail.
Here the evil mind explained his whole situation to his father and by giving him enough money, he joined his side and said that you ‘speak secretly in the hollow of the tree’. He went and sat in the hollow of that tree in the night itself. Early in the morning both the brothers went to that place with the business leaders. There he asked, ‘Who has taken away the Ashrafis?’ Kotarstha’s father said – ‘Dharmabuddhi’ Seeing and hearing this impossible surprising incident, the clever officials thought that surely the evil mind has hidden someone here. They set fire to the chamber. When his father started jumping out of it, then he died by falling on the earth. Seeing this, the royal men came to know the whole secret and gave five hundred ashrifias to the religious minded.
