बहुमतका सत्य

किसी वृक्षपर एक उल्लू बैठा हुआ था। अचानक एक हंस उड़ता हुआ उस वृक्षपर आ बैठा। हंस स्वाभाविक रूपमें बोला-‘उफ्! कितनी गरमी है। सूर्य आज बहुत प्रचण्ड रूपमें चमक रहे हैं।’ उल्लू बोला-‘सूर्य ? सूर्य कहाँ है? इस समयगरमी है यह तो ठीक; किंतु यह गरमी तो अन्धकार बढ़ जानेसे हुआ करती है।’

हंसने समझानेका प्रयत्न किया- ‘सूर्य आकाशमें रहते हैं। उनका प्रकाश संसारमें फैलता है, तब गरमी बढ़ती है। सूर्यका प्रकाश ही गरमी है।’उल्लू हँसा – ‘तुमने प्रकाश नामक एक और नयी वस्तु बतायी। तुम चन्द्रमाकी बात करते तो वह मैं समझ सकता था। देखो, तुम्हें किसीने बहका दिया है। सूर्य या प्रकाश नामकी वस्तुओंकी संसारमें कोई सत्ता ही नहीं है।’

हंसने उल्लूको समझानेका जितना प्रयत्न किया, उल्लूका हठ उतना बढ़ता गया। अन्तमें उल्लूने कहा ‘यद्यपि इस समय उड़नेमें मुझे बहुत कष्ट होगा, फिर भी मैं तुम्हारे साथ चलूँगा। चलो, वनके भीतर सघन वृक्षोंके बीच जो भारी वटवृक्ष है, उसपर मेरे सैकड़ों बुद्धिमान् जाति-भाई हैं। उनसे निर्णय करा लो ।’

हंसने उल्लूकी बात स्वीकार कर ली। वे दोनों उल्लुओंके समुदायमें पहुँचे। उस उल्लूने कहा- ‘यह हंस कहता है कि आकाशमें इस समय सूर्य चमक रहाहै। उसका प्रकाश संसारमें फैलता है। वह प्रकाश उष्ण होता है।’ सारे उल्लू हँस पड़े, फिर चिल्लाकर बोले-‘क्या वाहियात बात है, न सूर्यकी कोई सत्ता है, न प्रकाशकी।

इस मूर्ख हंसके साथ तुम तो मूर्ख मत बनो। ‘

सब उल्लू उस हंसको मारने झपटे। कुशल इतनी थी कि उस समय दिन था। उल्लुओंको वृक्षोंके अन्धकारसे बाहर कुछ दीख नहीं सकता था। हंसको उड़कर अपनी रक्षा करनेमें कठिनाई नहीं हुई। उसने उड़ते-उड़ते अपने-आप कहा- ‘बहुमत सत्यको असत्य तो कर नहीं सकता, किंतु उल्लुओंका जहाँ बहुमत हो, वहाँ किसी समझदारको सत्यका प्रतिपादन करनेमें सफलता मिलनी कठिन ही है। चाहे वह सत्यका साक्षात्कार कर चुका हो।

An owl was sitting on a tree. Suddenly a swan came flying and sat on that tree. The swan spoke naturally – ‘Oops! how hot it is. The sun is shining very fiercely today.’ Owl said – ‘Sun? where is the sun It’s hot at this time, it’s okay; But this heat happens because of increasing darkness.’
Laughing tried to explain – ‘ The sun lives in the sky. His light spreads in the world, then the heat increases. Sunlight is heat.’ The owl laughed – ‘You told another new thing called light. If you were talking about the moon, I could have understood it. Look, someone has tricked you. Things called sun or light have no power in the world.’
The more the owl tried to persuade the owl to laugh, the more the owl’s stubbornness increased. At last the owl said, ‘ Although it will be very difficult for me to fly at this time, still I will go with you. Come on, there are hundreds of my intelligent caste-brothers on the heavy banyan tree among the dense trees inside the forest. Get them to decide.
Laughing accepted the owl’s words. They both reached the community of owls. That owl said – ‘ This swan says that the sun is shining in the sky at this time. His light spreads in the world. That light is warm.’ All the owls laughed, then shouted – ‘What a ridiculous thing, neither the sun nor the light has any power.
Don’t be fooled with this silly laugh. ,
All the owls rushed to kill that swan. Kushal was so efficient that it was day at that time. The owls could not see anything beyond the darkness of the trees. The swan had no difficulty in protecting itself by flying. While flying, he said to himself – ‘The majority cannot make the truth untrue, but where owls are in majority, it is difficult for any sensible person to get success in rendering the truth.
