संतोंके संगसे क्या नहीं सुलभ हो सकता!
हयग्रीव नामक दैत्यके एक पुत्र था, जो ‘उत्कल’ नामसे प्रसिद्ध हुआ। उसने समरांगणमें देवताओंको परास्त करके देवराज इन्द्रके छत्रको छीन लिया था। उस महाबली दैत्यने और भी बहुत-से मनुष्यों तथा नरेशोंकी राज्य- सम्पत्तिका अपहरण करके सौ वर्षोंतक सर्ववैभवसम्पन्न राज्यका उपभोग किया। एक दिन इधर-उधर विचरता हुआ दैत्य उत्कल गंगा-सागरसंगमपर महर्षि जाजलिकी पर्णशालाके समीप गया और पानीमें बंसी डालकर बारम्बार मछलियोंको पकड़ने लगा। यद्यपि मुनिने मना किया, तथापि उस दुर्बुद्धिने उनकी बात नहीं मानी। मुनिश्रेष्ठ जाजलि सिद्ध महात्मा थे, उन्होंने उत्कलको शाप देते हुए कहा- ‘दुर्मते! तू बगुलेकी भाँति मछली पकड़ता और खाता है, इसलिये बगुला ही हो जा।’ फिर क्या था ? उत्कल उसी क्षण बगुलेके रूपमें परिणत हो गया। तेजोभ्रष्ट हो जानेके कारण उसका सारा गर्व गल गया। उसने हाथ जोड़कर मुनिको प्रणाम किया और उनके दोनों चरणोंमें पड़कर कहा-‘मुने! मैं आपके प्रचण्ड तपोबलको नहीं जानता था। जाजलिजी! मेरी रक्षा कीजिये। आप जैसे साधु-महात्माओंका संग तो उत्तम मोक्षका द्वार माना गया है। जो शत्रु और मित्रमें, मान और अपमानमें, सुवर्ण और मिट्टीके ढेलेमें तथा सुख और दुःखमें भी समभाव रखते हैं, वे आप-जैसे महात्मा ही सच्चे साधु हैं। मुने! इस भूतलपर महात्माओंके दर्शनसे मनुष्योंका कौन-सा मनोरथ नहीं पूरा हुआ? ब्रह्मपद, इन्द्रपद, सम्राट्का पद तथा योगसिद्धि- सब कुछ सन्तोंकी कृपासे सुलभ हो सकते हैं। मुनिश्रेष्ठ जाजले! आप जैसे महात्माओंसे लोगोंको धर्म, अर्थ और कामको प्राप्ति हुई तो क्या हुई? साधुपुरुषोंकी कृपासे तो साक्षात् पूर्णब्रह्म परमात्मा भी मिल जाता है।’
उत्कलकी विनययुक्त बात सुनकर
जाजलिमुनि प्रसन्न हो गये। उन्होंने उत्कलसे कहा- ‘वैवस्वत मन्वन्तर प्राप्त होनेपर जब अट्ठाईसवें द्वापरका अन्तिम समय बीतता होगा, उस समय भारतवर्षके माथुर जनपदमें स्थित व्रजमण्डलके भीतर साक्षात् परिपूर्णतम भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण वृन्दावनमें गोवत्स चराते हुए विचरेंगे। उन्हीं दिनों तुम भगवान् श्रीकृष्णके हाथोंसे मृत्यु पाकर उनमें लीन हो जाओगे, जैसे हिरण्याक्ष आदि दैत्य भगवान् के प्रति वैरभाव रखनेपर भी उनके परमपदको प्राप्त हो गये हैं।’
इस प्रकार वकासुरके रूपमें परिणत हुआ उत्कल दैत्य जाजलिके वरदानसे भगवान् श्रीकृष्णमें लयको प्राप्त हुआ। सन्तोंके संगसे भला क्या नहीं सुलभ हो सकता ! [ गर्गसंहिता ]
What cannot be attained by the company of saints!
A demon named Hayagriva had a son, who became famous as ‘Utkal’. He had snatched the umbrella of Devraj Indra after defeating the gods in the battle. That mighty demon, having abducted many more humans and the state property of kings, enjoyed the all-glorious state for a hundred years. One day, wandering here and there, the demon Utkal went near Maharishi Jajli’s parnashala at the confluence of the Ganges and the ocean and started catching fish again and again by putting his flute in the water. Although the sage refused, that fool did not listen to him. Munishrestha Jajali was a Siddha Mahatma, he cursed Utkal and said – ‘ Durmate! You catch and eat fish like a heron, so be a heron.’ What was then ? Utkal at that very moment turned into a heron. All his pride melted away because of his luster. He bowed down to the sage with folded hands and fell at both his feet and said – ‘Mune! I did not know your intense penance. Jajliji! Protect me The company of saints and great souls like you is considered to be the best way of salvation. Those who are equally equanimous in enemy and friend, in honor and dishonour, in gold and lump of earth and in happiness and sorrow, they are true sages like you. Mune! Which desire of human beings was not fulfilled by the darshan of Mahatmas on this earth? Brahmapad, Indrapad, Emperor’s post and Yogasiddhi – all can be easily achieved by the grace of saints. Munishrestha Jajle! What if people got religion, meaning and work from great souls like you? By the grace of sages, even the Absolute Brahman is attained in person.’

Jajalimuni became happy. He said to Utkal- ‘When the last time of the twenty-eighth Dwapara will pass after attaining the Vaivaswat Manvantar, at that time Lord Shri Krishna, the Supreme Lord Shri Krishna, will wander in Vrindavan grazing cows within the Vrajmandal located in the Mathur district of India. In those days you will be absorbed in Lord Krishna after death at the hands of Lord Krishna, just as Hiranyaksha etc. demons have attained their supreme position even after having enmity towards God.’
In this way, Utkal, who was transformed into the form of Vakasur, attained Laya in Lord Krishna by the boon of the demon Jajal. What good cannot be achieved by the company of saints! [Gargasamhita]
