दानका अनुपम उदाहरण
एक दिन किसी बुढ़ियाने एक दरवाजेपर भीखके लिये याचना की। एक बालकने आकर बुढ़िया की दयनीय दशा देख अपनी माँसे कहा- ‘माँ! एक बुढ़िया मुझे ‘बेटा’ कहकर कुछ माँग रही है।’ माँने कहा- ‘चावल दे दो।’ पर बालकने हठ करते हुए कहा—’माँ! चावलसे क्या होगा ? तुम अपने हाथमें सोनेके कंगन पहने हो, वही दे दो न। मैं बड़ा होकर तुम्हें दो कंगन बनवा दूँगा।’
माँने बालकके इच्छानुसार अपना वह सोनेका कंगन दे दिया। भिखारिनने कंगन प्राप्तकर बालकको हृदयसे अनेक आशीर्वाद दिये।
वह बालक बड़ा होकर एक विद्वान् बना और
उसकी विद्वत्ताकी प्रसिद्धि दूर-दूरतक फैल गयी। एक दिन वह माँसे बोला-‘माँ! तुम अपने हाथका नाप दे दो। मैं कंगन बनवा देता हूँ।’ उसे बचपनमें कही बात याद थी। माँने कहा- ‘उसकी चिन्ता छोड़। मैं इतनी बूढ़ी हो गयी हूँ कि अब मुझे कंगन शोभा नहीं देगा। हाँ, कलकत्तेमें गरीबोंके लिये एक विद्यालय तथा चिकित्सालय खुलवा दे, जहाँ निःशुल्क पढ़ाई तथा चिकित्सा – व्यवस्था हो सके।
पुत्रने माँकी इच्छाके अनुसार कलकत्तामें विद्यालय और अस्पतालकी व्यवस्था कर दी।
उस पुत्रका नाम था – ईश्वरचन्द्र विद्यासागर ।
Danka’s unique example
One day an old woman begged for alms at a door. Seeing the pitiable condition of the old woman, a child came and said to his mother- ‘Mother! An old woman is asking for something by calling me ‘son’. Mother said- ‘Give me the rice.’ But the child stubbornly said – ‘ Mother! What will happen with rice? You are wearing a gold bracelet in your hand, give me the same. I will make you two bracelets when I grow up.’
The mother gave that gold bracelet of hers as per the wish of the child. The beggar received the bracelet and gave many blessings to the child from her heart.

The fame of his scholarship spread far and wide. One day he said to his mother – ‘Mother! You give the size of your hand. I’ll get the bracelet made.’ He remembered something in his childhood. Mother said- ‘Stop worrying about him. I am so old that the bracelet will no longer suit me. Yes, open a school and hospital for the poor in Calcutta, where free education and medical facilities can be provided.
The son made arrangements for a school and hospital in Calcutta as per the wish of the mother.
The name of that son was – Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar.
