मैं खून नहीं पी सकता!

महात्मा गांधीजीने कहा है- ‘मैंने गुरु नहीं बनाया; किंतु मुझे कोई गुरु मिले हैं तो वे हैं- रायचंद भाई।’

ये रायचंद भाई पहले बम्बईमें जवाहरातका व्यापार करते थे। उन्होंने एक व्यापारीसे सौदा किया। यह निश्चित हो गया कि अमुक तिथितक, अमुक भावमें इतना जवाहरात वह व्यापारी देगा। व्यापारीने रायचंद भाईको लिखा-पढ़ी कर दी ।

संयोगकी बात, जवाहरातके मूल्य बढ़ने लगे और इतने अधिक बढ़ गये कि यदि रायचंद भाईको उनके जवाहरात वह व्यापारी दे तो उसे इतना घाटा लगे कि उसका अपना घरतक नीलाम करना पड़े।

श्रीरायचंद भाईको जवाहरातके वर्तमान बाजार भावका पता लगा तो वे उस व्यापारीकी दूकानपर पहुँचे। उन्हें देखते ही व्यापारी चिन्तित हो गया। उसने कहा—’मैं आपके सौदेके लिये स्वयं चिन्तित हूँ। चाहे जो हो, वर्तमान भावके अनुसार जवाहरातके घाटेके रुपये अवश्य आपको दे दूँगा, आप चिन्ता न करें।’ रायचंद भाई बोले-‘मैं चिन्ता क्यों न करूँ ?तुमको जब चिन्ता लग गयी है तो मुझे भी चिन्ता होनी ही चाहिये। हम दोनोंकी चिन्ताका कारण यह लिखा पढ़ी है। इसे समाप्त कर दिया जाय तो दोनोंकी चिन्ता समाप्त हो जाय।’

व्यापारी बोला-‘ऐसा नहीं। आप मुझे दो दिनका समय दें, मैं रुपये चुका दूँगा।’ रायचंद भाईने लिखा-पढ़ीके कागजको टुकड़े टुकड़े करते हुए कहा- ‘इस लिखा-पढ़ीसे तुम बँध गये थे। बाजार भाव बढ़नेसे मेरा चालीस-पचास हजार रुपया तुमपर लेना हो गया। किंतु मैं तुम्हारी परिस्थिति जानता हूँ। ये रुपये तुमसे मैं तो तुम्हारी क्या दशा होगी ? रायचंद दूध पी सकता है, खून नहीं पी सकता।’

वह व्यापारी तो रायचंद भाईके पैरोंपर गिर पड़ा। वह कह रहा था—’आप मनुष्य नहीं, देवता हैं। ‘ क्या ही अच्छा हो कि छल-कपट, ठगी-मक्कारी, झूठ फरेब करके किसी प्रकार दूसरेकी परिस्थितिसे लाभ उठानेको आतुर आजका समाज इन महापुरुषोंके उदार चरितसे कुछ भी प्रेरणा ले।

Mahatma Gandhiji has said- ‘I did not make a Guru; But if I have found a guru, he is Raichand Bhai.
These Raichand brothers used to do jewelery business in Bombay earlier. He made a deal with a merchant. It has been decided that by a certain date, at such a price, the merchant will give so much jewels. The businessman got Raichand Bhai educated.
Coincidentally, the prices of the jewels started increasing and so much so that if the trader gave his jewels to Raichand Bhai, he would have suffered so much loss that he would have to auction his own house.
After Shri Raichand Bhai came to know about the current market price of the jewels, he reached the shop of that merchant. The businessman got worried on seeing them. He said – ‘I myself am worried about your deal. Whatever may happen, according to the current price, I will definitely give you the money for the loss of jewellery, don’t worry.’ Raichand Bhai said – ‘Why should I not worry? When you are worried, then I must also be worried. The cause of concern for both of us is that it has been written. If this is abolished, then the worries of both will end.
The merchant said – ‘Not like that. You give me two days time, I will pay Rs. Raichand Bhai tore the scribbled paper into pieces and said – ‘You were bound by this scribble. Due to increase in the market price, I have to borrow forty-fifty thousand rupees from you. But I know your situation. If I get this money from you then what will be your condition? Raichand can drink milk, but cannot drink blood.’
That businessman fell at Raichand Bhai’s feet. He was saying-‘ You are not a human, you are a deity. ‘ How good it would be if today’s society, which is eager to take advantage of other’s situation by cheating, cheating, lying, takes some inspiration from the generous character of these great men.
