श्रुतायुधके पास शंकरजीके वरदानसे प्राप्त एक अमोघ गदा थी। उसके तपसे प्रसन्न होकर भगवान्ने यह उपहार उसे इस शर्तपर दिया था कि वह उसका अनीतिपूर्वक प्रयोग न करे, यदि करेगा तो लौटकर वह उसका ही विनाश कर देगी।
महाभारतयुद्धमें श्रुतायुधको अर्जुनसे लड़ना पड़ा। युद्ध प्रबल वेगसे होने लगा और दोनों ही अपना | रणकौशल दिखाने लगे।
सारथीका काम करते हुए कृष्णको श्रुतायुधकी अनीतिपर हँसी आ गयी। यह हँसी उसे तीरकी तरह चुभी और आवेशमें आकर उसने अपनी अमोघ गदा श्रीकृष्णपर फेंक चलायी। उसे यह भी ध्यान नहीं रहा कि उसके | साथ क्या शर्त जुड़ी हुई है।
गदा कृष्णतक न पहुँची और बीचसे ही वापस लौटकर श्रुतायुधपर गिर पड़ी। उसका शरीर क्षत विक्षत होकर भूमिपर गिर पड़ा।
धृतराष्ट्रको यह समाचार सुनाते हुए संजयने कहा- ‘राजन्! मनुष्यको समस्त शक्तियाँ श्रुतायुधकी गदाकी तरह सदुपयोगके लिये मिली हैं, जो उन्हें अनीतिपूर्वक प्रयोग करते हैं, वे उलटे अपने-आपसे ही आहत होकर इसी तरह विनाशको प्राप्त होते हैं।’ [श्री ओमप्रकाशजी छारिया ]
