कौरवों और पाण्डवोंका युद्ध निश्चित हो गया। युद्धमें श्रीकृष्णकी सहायता लेनेके लिये दुर्योधन और अर्जुन दोनों द्वारका गये। उस समय श्रीकृष्ण सोये हुए थे।
दुर्योधन पहले पहुँचा था। उसे श्रीकृष्णके चरणोंमें जाकर बैठना चाहिये, किंतु वह तो मूर्ख और अभिमानी था। उसने विचार किया-‘मैं तो बहुत बड़ा इज्जतदार राजा हूँ, भला इनके चरणोंमें क्यों बैठूं ?’ अतः श्रीकृष्णके सिरहाने के पास एक सिंहासनपर वह बैठ गया। अर्जुन बादमें आये और श्रीकृष्णके चरणोंमें बैठ गये।
त्रिलोकीनाथ नींदसे जागे तो उनकी नजर सीधी अर्जुन पर पड़ी। दुर्योधनने कहा- ‘अर्जुनसे पहले मैं आया हूँ।’
भगवान्ने कहा- ‘तुम चाहे पहले आये हो, किंतु
मेरी नज़र तो पहले अर्जुनपर ही पड़ी है।’
अर्जुन भगवान्के चरणोंमें बैठा था, इसलिये उनकी नज़र सबसे पहले अर्जुनपर ही पड़ी। दुर्योधन मूर्ख था, भगवान् क्या करें? फिर भी श्रीकृष्णने कहा- ‘तुम दोनों आये हो, अतः मैं दोनोंकी सहायता करूँगा।’ तो
एक ओर सभामें अपमान करनेवाला दुर्योधन आया है। दूसरी ओर श्रीकृष्णके साथ अतिशय प्रेम करनेवाला अर्जुन भी आया है। किंतु श्रीकृष्ण तो अन्तर्यामी हैं, योगेश्वर हैं। अपने द्वारपर आनेवाले सभीको वे प्रेमसे देखते हैं। श्रीकृष्ण महान् गृहस्थ हैं और महान् संन्यासी भी हैं। संन्यासीका यह अर्थ नहीं कि उन्होंने भगवे कपड़े पहन लिये। किंतु श्रीकृष्ण सभीको प्रेमसे-एक ही नजरसे देखते हैं, फिर चाहे उनके आँगनमें दुर्योधन आये, चाहे अर्जुन प्रभुने दोनोंकी सहायता करनेका वचन दिया, ‘एक पक्षमें मेरी नारायणी सेना रहेगी और दूसरी ओर अस्त्र-शस्त्ररहित मैं अकेला रहूँगा।’
दुर्योधनने विचार किया, ‘ये कोई लड़नेवाले नहीं हैं और मुझे जरूरत है लड़नेवालोंकी।’ उसने सेना माँगी। दुर्योधनको माँगना नहीं आया।
भगवान्ने अर्जुनसे कहा- ‘देख, मैं लगा नहीं।’ किंतु अर्जुनने कहा- ‘महाराज! मैं आपको जरा भी तकलीफ नहीं दूँगा। आप केवल साथ रहना। आप साथ रहेंगे तो मुझे शक्ति मिलेगी। लडूंगा मैं, पर आप साथ रहना।’
श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुनके सारथी बने और रणभूमिमें उसकी रक्षा की, उसे विजयी बनाया।

The war between the Kauravas and the Pandavas was fixed. Duryodhana and Arjuna both went to Dwarka to seek the help of Shri Krishna in the war. At that time Shri Krishna was sleeping.
Duryodhana had reached earlier. He should go and sit at the feet of Shri Krishna, but he was foolish and arrogant. He thought – ‘I am a very respected king, why should I sit at his feet?’ So he sat on a throne near the head of Shri Krishna. Arjuna came later and sat at the feet of Shri Krishna.
When Trilokinath woke up from sleep, his eyes fell directly on Arjuna. Duryodhana said- ‘I have come before Arjuna.’
God said- ‘You may have come earlier, but
My eyes are first fixed on Arjun.
Arjuna was sitting at the feet of the Lord, so his eyes first fell on Arjuna. Duryodhan was a fool, what should God do? Still Shri Krishna said- ‘You both have come, so I will help both of them.’ So
On the one hand, Duryodhana, the insulter, has come in the assembly. On the other hand, Arjuna, who has immense love for Shri Krishna, has also come. But Shri Krishna is Antaryami, Yogeshwar. He lovingly greets everyone who comes to his door. Shri Krishna is a great householder and also a great sannyasin. Sannyasin does not mean that he wears saffron clothes. But Shri Krishna looks at everyone with love – with the same eyes, whether Duryodhana comes to his courtyard or Arjuna Prabhu has promised to help both, ‘On one side my Narayani army will be there and on the other side I will be alone without weapons.’
Duryodhana thought, ‘These are not fighters and I need fighters.’ He asked for army. Duryodhan did not know how to ask.
God said to Arjun – ‘Look, I did not feel.’ But Arjun said – ‘ Maharaj! I will not give you any trouble. You just stay together I will get strength if you are with me. I will fight, but you stay with me.
Shri Krishna became the charioteer of Arjuna and protected him in the battlefield, made him victorious.
