उसके लिये श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र की इच्छा ही सब कुछ। श्रीकृष्ण की बात वेदवाक्य। श्रीकृष्ण का संकेत सुभद्रा का जीवन। वह तो छोटे भाई को छोड़कर दूसरे किसी को न जानती न जानना चाहती।
अर्जुन आये पहिली बार द्वारिका और फिर श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र के साथ दक्षिण कौसल चले गये। वहाँ से जब ये घनश्याम भाई विवाह करके लौटे वे गाण्डीवधन्वा भी आये थे साथ ही। सुभद्रा ने तभी देखा था उन्हें। श्रीकृष्ण के सखा- भाई के समान ही श्यामवर्ण, सुन्दर कमललोचन, विशाल बाहु और भाई कितना मानते, कितना स्नेह करते हैं उन्हें। जो श्रीकृष्ण का इतना प्रिय, वह सुभद्रा को परमप्रिय लगा।
अर्जुन ने भी सुभद्रा को देखा। श्रीकृष्ण की भुवन-भूषणा, सौन्दर्यमयी, शीलमयी भगिनी- पार्थ का चित्त भी लग गया उसमें और तभी इसे श्रीकृष्ण ने लक्षित भी कर लिया था। लक्षित तो कर लिया था इसे देवी कालिन्दी और माता देवकी ने भी।
देवी कालिंदी ने अंत:पुर में कहा था- ‘मेरी ही भाँति सुभद्रा जी को भी अपने भाई अत्यन्त प्रिय हैं और जैसे मैंने हठ कर लिया था, भाई के समान वर्ण, उनसे भी सुन्दर, प्रभावशाली से विवाह करूँगी, वैसे ये भी गौर-पुरुष की ओर देखना नहीं चाहतीं। क्या करें, यहाँ जो मेघश्याम हैं- वे तो सगे भाई हैं किन्तु उनके समान वर्णी उनके सखा आये तो बस उनकी सेवा में जुट गयी हैं। देखें, इनकी साधना कब सफल होती है’
बात सचमुच अद्भुत थी। भगवान संकर्षण का अतिशय वात्सल्य था, रेवतीजी, रुक्मिणी, सत्यभामा जी आदि सभी महारानियाँ मानो पलकों पर सुभद्रा को रखना चाहती थीं किन्तु सुभद्रा को तो गौरवर्ण से ही मानो रुचि नहीं थी।
वह श्रीकृष्ण के साथ उनके अन्तःपुर आने पर उन्हीं के साथ लगी रहती और महारानियों में भाई के समान इन्दीवर सुन्दर वर्ण वाली कालिन्दी जी से उसकी पटती थी। अपनी इस भाभी के भवन में ही वह टिकी रहती थी।
कालिन्दी जी भी सुभद्रा से अतिशय स्नेह करती थीं। उन्होंने श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र से और माता देवकी से भी कहा था- ‘मध्यम पांडव के विदा होते ही सुभद्रा जी उदास हो गयीं- खोयी खोयी सी रहने लगीं। इनका हृदय ले गये वे। कहीं भी अन्यत्र इनका विवाह इन्हें बहुत व्यथा देगा।’
माता देवकी ने वसुदेव जी से भी बात कर ली थी। सब सुभद्रा विवाह धनंजय से करना चाहते थे किन्तु श्रीबलराम तो भगिनी को साम्राज्ञी बनाने को उत्सुक थे। उनसे कुछ भी कहने का साहस पिता-माता ही नहीं कर पाते तो दूसरा कोई करे।
अनन्त अनन्त ब्रह्माण्डों की उत्पत्ति-विनाश जिनके संकल्प के अनुसार महामाया करती रहती हैं, वे सत्य संकल्प और उनका संकल्प भी क्या- वे सदा से स्वजनवत्सल हैं। अपनों का प्रिय ही उनका सदा प्रिय रहा है। अपना अभिन्न सखा जो चाहता है, जिसमें सुखी हो और अनुजा को भी अभीष्ट है, वही तो श्रीकृष्ण को प्रिय है। वही श्रीकृष्ण का संकल्प और जो श्रीकृष्ण का संकल्प, उसे सार्थक करने के लिये देवी योगमाया का संयोग जुटाते क्या देर लगती है।
पांडवों ने द्रुपदराज कुमारी को माता के आदेश से संयुक्त पत्नी बनाया तो भगवान व्यास ने उनमें परस्पर विवाद एवं मनोमालिन्य कभी उत्पन्न न हो, इसके लिये पथ-प्रशस्त कर दिया। उनकी सम्मति से पाँचों भाइयों ने नियम बनाया कि पांचाली एक-एक वर्ष के लिये प्रत्येक की पत्नी रहेगी। जब वे एक की पत्नी हों, उस काल में एकान्त कक्ष में दोनों के रहते कोई अन्य भाई उस कक्ष में चला जाय तो उसे बारह वर्ष निर्वासित जीवन व्यतीत करना पड़ेगा।
नियम चाहे जितना सामान्य हो- वह पुरुष की कसौटी कर लेता है। उस कसौटी पर जो खरा उतरे, उसका महामंगल सुनिश्चित है। द्रौपदी युधिष्ठिर के पास बैठी थीं एकान्त कक्ष में और उसी कक्ष में अर्जुन का गाण्डीव धनुष रखा था। अचानक एक ब्राह्मण आर्त-पुकार करता आया। उसकी गायें दस्यु बलात लिये जा रहे थे। ब्राह्मण की गायों को बचाना प्रथम कर्तव्य था। अर्जुन सिर झुकाये गये उस कक्ष में और धनुष उठा लाये। ब्राह्मण के स्वत्व की रक्षा हो गयी। क्षत्रिय धर्म आर्त-आश्रित की रक्षा पूर्ण हुआ। अब अपने बनाये नियम की रक्षा करनी थी।
युधिष्ठिर ने समझाया- ‘वे दिन में केवल बैठे थे महारानी द्रौपदी के साथ। बड़े भाई-भाभी के कक्ष में उन दोनों के रहते भी छोटा भाई जाये तो दोष नहीं है। ब्राह्मण की गायों की रक्षा राजा का कर्तव्य था। अर्जुन ने स्वयं बड़े भाई के धर्म की रक्षा की है’
‘नियम बनते समय तो हमने कोई ऐसा अपवाद नहीं माना है। सब अपवाद मानना दुर्बलता है’ अर्जुन नियम की कसौटी पर खरे उतरे। उन्होंने स्वेच्छापूर्वक बारह वर्ष का निर्वासन स्वीकार किया। इन्द्रप्रस्थ से निकल पड़े और देश भर में घूमते रहे। ग्यारह वर्ष व्यतीत हो चुके थे जब वे यात्रा करते प्रभास क्षेत्र पहुँचे।

Arjun first came to Dwarka and then went to Dakshin Kausal with Shri Krishnachandra. When Ghanshyam Bhai returned from there after getting married, Gandivadhanva also came along with him. Subhadra saw him only then. Shyamvarna, beautiful Kamallochan, huge arms and brothers like Shri Krishna’s friend-brother, how much they respect him, how much they love him. The one who was so dear to Shri Krishna, he was very dear to Subhadra.
Arjun also saw Subhadra. Shri Krishna’s Bhuvan-Bhushana, beauty-loving, graceful sister-Partha’s mind also got involved in her and only then Shri Krishna had targeted her. Goddess Kalindi and Mata Devki had also targeted him.
Goddess Kalindi had said in the heart- ‘Like me, Subhadra ji also loves her brother very much and as I had stubbornly, I will marry a brother’s character, more beautiful, influential than him, also note this- Don’t want to look at men. What to do, the Meghshyam here – they are real brothers, but when their friends of the same caste come, they just get busy in their service. See, when their meditation is successful’
It was really amazing. Lord Sankarshan was extremely fond of, Revatiji, Rukmini, Satyabhama ji etc. all the queens wanted to keep Subhadra on their eyelids, but Subhadra was not interested in Gauvarna.
She used to stay with Shri Krishna when he came to his entourage and among the queens, she used to get along well with Kalindi ji of Indivar beautiful complexion like a brother. She used to stay in this sister-in-law’s house only.
Kalindi ji also had great affection for Subhadra. He had said to Shrikrishna Chandra and also to Mata Devaki- ‘As soon as the middle Pandav left, Subhadra ji became sad – she started living lost. They took his heart. Their marriage anywhere else will give them a lot of pain.
Mata Devki had also talked to Vasudev ji. Everyone wanted to marry Subhadra to Dhananjay but Shri Balaram was eager to make his sister the empress. If the father and mother do not have the courage to say anything to them, then someone else should do it.
The creation and destruction of infinite infinite universes according to whose resolution Mahamaya keeps on doing, they are true resolutions and what is their resolution – they are always self-born. The dear ones have always been dear to him. The one who wants his integral friend, in whom he is happy and also wants his sister-in-law, he is dear to Shri Krishna. The same resolution of Shri Krishna and the resolution of Shri Krishna, how long does it take to gather the confluence of Goddess Yogmaya to make it meaningful.
When the Pandavas made Drupadraj Kumari their joint wife by the order of their mother, Lord Vyas paved the way for mutual disputes and affection to never arise between them. With his consent, the five brothers made a rule that Panchali would be each one’s wife for one year. When they are the wife of one, if another brother goes to that room while both of them are in a solitary room, then he will have to spend twelve years in exile.
No matter how general the rule is – it tests the man. The one who comes true to that criterion, his great fortune is assured. Draupadi was sitting beside Yudhishthira in a secluded room and in the same room Arjuna’s Gandiva bow was kept. Suddenly a Brahmin came calling. His cows were being taken away by bandits. The first duty was to save the cows of a Brahmin. Arjun bowed his head and went into that room and picked up the bow. Brahmin’s self was protected. Kshatriya Dharma, the protection of the dependent is complete. Now I had to protect the rule I had made.
Yudhishthira explained- ‘He only sat with Queen Draupadi during the day. There is no fault if the younger brother goes to the elder brother-sister-in-law’s room even when both of them are there. It was the duty of the king to protect the cows of Brahmins. Arjun himself has protected the religion of his elder brother.
While making the rule, we have not considered any such exception. It is weakness to accept all exceptions’ Arjuna came true to the test of rule. He voluntarily accepted an exile of twelve years. Left Indraprastha and roamed across the country. Eleven years had passed when they reached Prabhas Kshetra while traveling. (respectively)
