श्री कृष्ण के सभी विरोधियों को मगध राज ने आमन्त्रित किया। दन्तवक्र का महामायावी पुत्र सुवक्र, पौण्ड्रक का पुत्र सुदेव, एकलव्य का पुत्र, पाण्ड्यराज का पुत्र, कलिंग नरेश, राजावेणुदारि, क्रथ का पुत्र अंशुमान, श्रुतधर्म, कलिंगराज, गांधार नरेश, कौशाम्बी पति- ये विशेष आग्रह करके बुलाये गये और अपनी पूरी सेना लेकर आये।शाल्व, भगदत्त, दन्तवक्र, शल, विदूरथ, भूरिश्रवा, कुन्तिवीर्यादि जरासन्ध के साथी तो आये ही।
शिशुपाल की राजधानी चन्द्रिकापुरी से इस बारात ने प्रस्थान किया। बारात की अपेक्षा यह बड़ी सेना थी अनेक पराक्रमी प्रसिद्ध नरेशों की और युद्ध-यात्रा जैसा ही प्रबंध था। मगधराज की सम्मति के अनुसार सुनीथ (दमघोष) ने अपने पुत्र के वैवाहिक मंगलकृत्य कुण्डिनपुर पहुँचकर ही करने का निश्चय किया था। क्योंकि इस बारात को सुरक्षा की दृष्टि से पहिले पहुँचना था।
बारात विदर्भ पहुँची तो विदर्भ-नरेश महाराज हिरण्यरोमा (भीष्मक) जी तथा उनके चार पुत्र रुक्मरथ, रुक्मबाहु, रुक्मकेश एवं रुक्ममाली में कोई उत्साह नहीं था। उत्साह था ज्येष्ठ कुमार युवराज रुक्मी में। महाराज भीष्मक तथा उनके छोटे चारों पुत्र श्रीकृष्ण को रुक्मिणी देना चाहते थे किन्तु एक ही कन्या- पांच भाइयों में सबसे छोटी, उसके विवाह में विवाद उठे- इससे सब बचाना चाहते थे। अतः सभी कर्तव्य के पालन में लगे थे। बारात का बड़े उत्साह से स्वागत किया युवराज रुक्मी ने। उन्होंने सभी नरेशों को निवास दिया। मगधराज जरासन्ध ने राजधानी कुण्डिनपुर के चारों ओर दूर दूर तक के प्रदेश का निरीक्षण किया।
कृष्ण यदि आवें और कन्या का हरण करना चाहें तो उनका पथ क्या होगा? किधर से निकल सकना संभव है उनका? इन सब बातों पर रुक्मी से मगधराज ने स्पष्ट बात कर ली और सुरक्षा की दृष्टि से साथ आये नरेशों तथा सेना को ठहराया गया। शीघ्र सब ओर से घेरा डाला जा सके और परस्पर सहयोग पूर्वक व्यूह बनाया जा सके, यह व्यवस्था की गयी। ‘वे इतना साहस नहीं करेंगे।’ रुक्मी अपने गर्व में कहता था- ‘यदि उन्होंने दुस्साहस किया तो केवल विदर्भ की सेना ही उन्हें अच्छा पाठ पढ़ा देने में समर्थ है।’
‘पता नहीं मेरे बड़े भाई को मुझसे किस जन्म की शत्रुता है’ रुक्मिणी ने सुना कि शिशुपाल को विवाह का आमन्त्रण दिया गया है तो लगा कि पृथ्वी कुम्हार के चाक पर चढ़ी घूम रही है- ‘वे नहीं आवेंगे? वे मेरे आराध्य नहीं पधारेंगे? सुना है कि वे सर्वज्ञ हैं, अन्तर्यामी भी हैं, इस किंकरी को अन्यमनोलग्ना कह दिया उन्होंने?’
‘इस शरीर को इसके अतिरिक्त अन्य कोई पुरुष स्पर्श नहीं कर सकेगा- प्राण रहते तो नहीं ही’ रुक्मिणी जी के लिए प्राण-त्याग न कोई समस्या थी, न कठिन था। कठिन तो यह था कि शरीर किसी को संकल्पित हो चुका था। वह सर्वज्ञ है, दयामय है, समर्थ है तब उसकी वस्तु नष्ट कैसे कर दी जाय? वह क्या कहेगा- क्या सोचेगा? ‘उनकी तो कोई चर्चा भी नहीं करता।’
रुक्मिणी जी को लगा कि वे धरा पर अवतीर्ण हुए हैं तो धरा की मर्यादा भी तो है। उन्हें समाचार तो मिलना चाहिये। बाल्यकाल से जिन वृद्ध कुलपुरोहित का वात्सल्य मिला था, जिन्होंने राजसभा में कहा था कि ‘यह ब्रह्मा का विधान है कि श्रीकृष्ण रुक्मिणी का पाणिग्रहण करेंगे।’ वही एकमात्र आशा दीखी राजकुमारी को। वे अन्तःपुर में पधारे तो रोती रुक्मिणी ने उनके चरण पकड़ लिये। यह पौत्री आज लज्जाहीना बन गयी है। यह प्राण दे देगी, किन्तु…. आप इसे जीवित ही देखना चाहते हों तो द्वारिका चले जायें। उनके चरणों में इसका सन्देश पहुँचा दें। यदि उन दयाधाम समर्थ ने इसे स्वीकार नहीं किया, देह त्याग कुछ कठिन नहीं है।’
‘वत्से! अधीर मत हो। सृष्टिकर्ता का विधान अन्यथा नहीं हुआ करता’ -ब्राह्मण ने आश्वासन दिया- ‘मैं स्वयं द्वारिका जाना चाहता था। तुमसे मिलने ही आया हूँ। तुम चिंता त्याग दो। उन गरुड़ासन को पहुँचने में कितने क्षण लगेंगे और उन चक्रपाणि का अवरोध करने में कौन समर्थ है। वे स्वजनपाल अपनों की उपेक्षा नहीं करते। उनके श्रीचरणों में लगी आशा निष्फल नहीं होती।’
वे ब्राह्मणवर्य उसी दिन एकाकी विदर्भ से निकल पड़े थे। वे तपोधन- रथ उन्होंने स्वीकार नहीं किया और अश्वारोहण उन वृद्ध के उपयुक्त नहीं था। वे उसी दिन कुण्डिनपुर से चले गये थे, जिस दिन राजा भीष्मक का भेजा ब्राह्मण चेदिराज दमघोष के पास रुक्मिणी-विवाह का आमन्त्रण एवं विवाह तिथि की सूचना लेकर भेजा गया था। वे विप्रवर्य दीर्घमार्ग पार कर द्वारिका पहुँचे। द्वारपाल ने उन्हें श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र के सदन में पहुँचाया।
ब्राह्मण को देखते ही वे आदिपुरुष अपने रत्नासन से उठे, दण्डवत गिरे चरणों पर, और आदरपूर्वक ले जाकर स्वर्णसिंहासन पर बैठाया। स्वयं चरण धोये। चन्दन, अक्षत, पुष्पमाल्य, धूप, दीप से सविधि पूजा की ब्राह्मण की। भोजन कराया और उत्तम शैया पर जब वे विप्रदेव विश्राम करने लगे तो वे द्वारिकाधीश स्वयं उनके चरण दबाने बैठ गये।
‘आप ब्राह्मणोत्तम हैं। आपका शास्त्र-वृद्ध सम्मत धर्म निर्बाध तो है? उसके पालन में काई कठिनाई या असन्तोष का हेतु तो नहीं है?’ जो समस्त विघ्नों को दूर करने में समर्थ है, वही तो ऐसा प्रश्न कर सकते हैं। ‘आप संकोच मत करें।’ ब्राह्मण देवता को बड़ा संकोच हो रहा था कि सर्वेश्वरेश्वर उनके पैर दबाने बैठे हैं।
इसे लक्ष्य करके श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा- ‘जो ब्राह्मण अपनी स्थिति में संतुष्ट रहते हैं, समस्त प्राणियों के सहृद हैं, अंहकारहीन शान्त हैं, उन्हें प्रणाम करने में मुझे सुख मिलता है। उनका चरण स्पर्श मुझे आनन्द देता है।आपके प्रजापालक नरेश सकुशल तो हैं? अर्थात महाराज भीष्मक ने किसी संकट में पड़कर तो आपको नहीं भेजा? आप बहुत कठिन-मार्ग पार कर बड़ी दूर से आये हैं। आपकी इतनी बड़ी यात्रा चाहे जितनी गुप्त बात हो, बतला दें। मैं आपकी क्या सेवा करूँ?’

Magadha Raj invited all the opponents of Shri Krishna. Suvakra, son of Dantavakra, son of Paundraka, Sudev, son of Eklavya, son of Pandyaraj, King of Kalinga, King Venudari, Anshuman, son of Krath, Shrutadharma, Kalingaraj, King of Gandhara, Kaushambi husband – they were called with special request and brought their entire army. Come. Shalva, Bhagdatta, Dantavakra, Shala, Vidurath, Bhurishrava, Kuntivirya etc. Jarasandh’s companions did come.
This procession left from Chandrikapuri, the capital of Shishupala. This was a bigger army than the procession, many mighty famous kings and the arrangement was like a war-travel. According to the advice of Magadharaj, Sunith (Damghosh) had decided to perform the marriage auspiciousness of his son only after reaching Kundinpur. Because this procession had to reach first from the point of view of security.
When the procession reached Vidarbha, there was no enthusiasm in Vidarbha-King Maharaj Hiranyaroma (Bhishmak) ji and his four sons Rukmarath, Rukmabahu, Rukmakesh and Rukmamali. There was enthusiasm in Jyeshtha Kumar Yuvraj Rukmi. Maharaj Bhishmak and his four younger sons wanted to give Rukmini to Shri Krishna, but only one girl – the youngest of five brothers, disputes arose in her marriage – wanted to save all of them. So everyone was engaged in performing the duty. Yuvraj Rukmi welcomed the procession with great enthusiasm. He gave residence to all the kings. Magadharaj Jarasandha inspected the far-flung region around the capital Kundinpur.
If Krishna comes and wants to abduct the girl, then what will be his path? From where is it possible for them to come out? Magadharaj had a clear talk with Rukmi on all these things and the kings and the army who had come along for security were appointed. This arrangement was made so that it could be cordoned off from all sides quickly and an array could be formed with mutual cooperation. ‘They would not dare so much.’ Rukmi used to say in his pride- ‘If he dares, only Vidarbha’s army is capable of teaching him a good lesson.’
‘I don’t know for what birth my elder brother has enmity with me’ Rukmini heard that Shishupala has been invited to the wedding, then felt that the earth is roaming on a potter’s wheel- ‘He will not come? Will they not come to worship me? I have heard that he is omniscient and also antrayami, did he call this quirk as non-conscious?’
‘No other man will be able to touch this body except this – even if there is no life’, for Rukmini ji, sacrificing life was neither a problem nor difficult. The difficulty was that the body had been resolved to someone. He is omniscient, merciful, capable, then how can his object be destroyed? What will he say – what will he think? ‘Nobody even talks about him.’
Rukmini ji felt that she has incarnated on the earth, so the earth has its dignity too. He should get the news. The old Vice-Chancellor who had received affection since childhood, who had said in the Raj Sabha that ‘It is the law of Brahma that Shri Krishna will take Rukmini’s water’. That was the only hope the princess saw. When he reached the courtyard, Rukmini holding his feet was weeping. This granddaughter has become shameless today. It will give life, but…. If you want to see it alive then go to Dwarka. Convey its message at his feet. If those Dayadham Samarth did not accept it, body sacrifice is not difficult.
‘Watse! Don’t be impatient The law of the Creator could not have been otherwise’ – Brahmin assured – ‘I myself wanted to go to Dwarka. I have come to meet you. Stop worrying How many moments will it take to reach that Garudasan and who is able to block those Chakrapani. Those relatives do not neglect their own people. The hope placed at His feet never fails. Those Brahmins left Vidarbha alone on the same day. He did not accept that Tapodhan-chariot and horse riding was not suitable for that old man. He had left Kundinpur on the same day, when the Brahmin sent by King Bhishmak was sent to Chediraj Damghosh with the invitation of Rukmini-marriage and information about the date of marriage. They reached Dwarka after crossing Vipravarya long route. The gatekeeper took him to the house of Shri Krishnachandra.
On seeing the Brahmin, the Adipurush got up from his Ratnasan, prostrated at his feet, and respectfully took him and made him sit on the golden throne. Wash your own feet. Brahmin was worshiped with sandalwood, Akshat, wreath, incense, lamp. Food was served and when Vipradev started resting on the best bed, Dwarkadhish himself sat down to press his feet. ‘You are the best of brahmins. Is your scripture-based religion uninterrupted? There is no reason for any difficulty or dissatisfaction in following it, is it? The one who is able to remove all the obstacles, only he can ask such a question. ‘Don’t you hesitate.’ The Brahmin deity was very hesitant that Sarveshwareshwar was sitting pressing his feet.
Aiming at this, Shri Krishna said- ‘I find pleasure in saluting those Brahmins who are content in their position, who are kind to all beings, who are egoless and peaceful. The touch of his feet gives me joy. Is your Prajapalak Naresh safe? Means Maharaj Bhishmak didn’t send you when he was in some trouble? You have come from a long distance after crossing a very difficult path. No matter how secret your big journey is, tell it. What can I do for you?’ (respectively)
