‘मुझसे उन्होंने मणि माँगा था। अपने लिये माँगने में संकोच लगता होगा- महाराज उग्रसेन का नाम लेकर माँगा। मैं क्या इतना भी नहीं समझता। मणि मेरे आराध्य की प्रतीक थी- कैसे दे देता मैं किन्तु जानता कि उसके लिये भाई मारा जायेगा तो दे ही देता।’
कितने भी अन्तरंग व्यक्ति से, कितने भी रहस्यपूर्ण ढंग से, कितना भी गुप्त रखने का आग्रह करके ऐसी बात कही जाय- जो बात आप स्वयं अपने भीतर नहीं पचा सके, वह दूसरे के भीतर पच जायगी? ऐसी चर्चा अपने आप प्रचारित होती है- बहुत शीघ्र प्रचारित होती है। लोक मानस ही ऐसा है कि दूसरे की दोष चर्चा बहुत उत्सुकता से- आग्रह से सुनता और कहता है। सब दूसरे से कहते हैं कि किसी से कहना मत, तुमसे कहता हूँ, और सब इसी प्रकार दूसरे से कहते है। सम्पूर्ण द्वारिका में यह चर्चा कानाफूसी के रूप में फैल गयी।
दासी ने रुक्मिणी जी से कहा और उन्होंने रात्रि में श्रीकृष्ण चन्द्र के चरण पकड़कर रोते-रोते निवेदन किया- ‘मैं यह क्या सुन रही हूँ। आपने सत्राजित से उनकी स्यमन्तक मणि माँगा था?’
श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र से, महाराज उग्रसेन से वसुदेव जी से या सात्यकि से, श्रीसंकर्षण से कोई कहे ऐसी बात, यह साहस किसी में नहीं था। प्रवाद तो जनसामान्य में फैलते हैं और बढ़ते हैं। मुख्य व्यक्तियों तक उनके पहुँचने में बहुत बिलम्ब होता है।
‘मैंने उनसे कहा था कि मणि वे महाराज उग्रसेन को अर्पित कर दें’-श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र ने सहज भाव से कहा- ‘उन्होंने कह दिया कि वह उनके आराध्य का प्रतीक है, बात समाप्त हो गयी। तुमको किसने कहा?’ ‘
कितनी स्यमन्तक मणियाँ चाहिये आपको?’ -साक्षात रमादेवी रुक्मिणी उनको कैसे सहन हो कि उनके आराध्य पर कोई लांछन लगावे।
उनके स्वर में व्यथा, रोष, आवेश, सब फूट पड़ा था- ‘यह किंकरी मर तो नहीं गयी है’
‘मुझे स्यमन्तक कहाँ चाहिये’ श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र ने पट्टमहिषी को उठाया चरणों पर से- ‘किन्तु बात क्या है?’
‘सत्राजित कहते हैं कि आपने मणि के लोभ में उनके भाई को मारकर शव भी लुप्त कर दिया है’ देवी रुक्मिणी ने रोते-रोते सुना दिया- ‘नगर के सामान्यजनों में यह प्रवाद फैल चुका है’
‘तब इस मिथ्या प्रवाद का मार्जन दूसरा स्यमन्तक देने से तो सम्भव नहीं’ श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र गम्भीर हो गये- ‘उसी मणि को लाना पड़ेगा। वह कहीं भी हो, उसे मैं ढूँढ़ने निकलूँगा, कल प्रतिष्ठित लोगों को लेकर किन्तु मेरे आने में विलम्ब हो तो व्याकुल मत होना।’
दूसरे दिन प्रातःकाल ही नगर में राजकीय दूत दौड़ने लगे। द्वारिका की प्रशासकीय महासभा में पहिली बार सभी वर्गों के प्रमुख, विद्वान, वयोवृद्ध तथा प्रतिष्ठित जन आमन्त्रित किये गये थे।
श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र उस महासभा में खड़े हुए- ‘बात मेरे सम्बन्ध की है किन्तु मेरे व्यक्तित्व को द्वारिका के प्रशासन से पृथक नहीं किया जा सकता। मेरे कृत्य का यश-अपयश का प्रभाव पूरे प्रशासन एवं प्रजा पर पड़ता है। सत्राजित के छोटे भाई प्रसेन अश्वारूढ होकर आखेट करने निकले और लौटकर नहीं आये। सत्राजित के पास देवदुर्लभ स्यमन्तक मणि थी। उनसे मैंने वह मणि यादव सम्राट के लिये माँगी थी। उन्होंने अस्वीकार कर दिय। उस दिन प्रसेन स्यमन्तक कण्ठ में धारण करके गये थे। अब यदि सत्राजित सन्देह करते हैं कि मैंने उनके भाई को कहीं मारकर मणि ले ली है तो सत्राजित को दोष नहीं दिया जा सकता किन्तु मुझे भी अपने पर लगे इस कलंक को दूर करने का अवसर मिलना चाहिये। आप अपने में से एक तटस्थ धार्मिक, सम्मानित, जनों का प्रतिनिधि मण्डल चुन दें, जिन्हें साथ लेकर मैं मणि तथा प्रसेन का अन्वेषण करने जाऊँ।मैं अपने साथ जाने वाले लोगों की सुरक्षा का दायित्व लेता हूँ किन्तु वन में अन्वेषण करना है। पथ का कष्ट सहन करना अनिवार्य होगा।’
स्पष्ट बिना किसी पर आपेक्ष किये श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र ने जो विवरण दिया, लोगों के मन का संदेह उसी से दूर हो गया। अनेक वयोवृद्ध, सम्मानित जन सत्राजित की छुद्रता पर रुष्ट हो उठे किन्तु वासुदेव ने कहा- ‘प्रसेन का क्या हुआ, यह पता लगाना प्रशासन का कर्तव्य है और स्यमन्तक कहीं किसी के पास रहे, उसके प्रभाव का लाभ संपूर्ण द्वारिका को मिलना है, अतः उसे खोया नहीं जा सकता। उसकी शोध होनी ही चाहिये।’ महाराज उग्रसेन की सम्मति से द्वारिका के प्रतिष्ठित लोगों का एक दल निश्चित हुआ। इसमें यदुवंश के- विशेषतः महाराज उग्रसेन तथा श्रीकृष्ण से सम्बन्ध रखने वाले लोग नहीं लिये गये। सत्राजित से भी साथ चलने का आग्रह किसी ने नहीं किया; क्योंकि लोगों की दृष्टि में सत्राजित का सम्मान नहीं रह गया था। वे अत्यन्त ओछे चित्त सिद्ध हुए थे। श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र ने आखेट के विशेषज्ञ, वन में चिह्नों को समझने वाले दो व्यक्ति साथ लिये। प्रसेन के अश्व के पदचिह्न देखते वे चल पड़े। शेष सबको उनके पीछे चलना था। अश्व ने कहाँ मूत्र त्याग किया, मल त्याग किया, कहाँ दौड़ा, कहाँ धीरे चला, यह सब उनकी दृष्टि सहज देख लेती थी। सबको वे उन चिह्नों को दिखाते-समझाते वन में बढ़ते चले गये।

‘He asked me for a gem. You must be hesitant to ask for yourself – Maharaj asked in the name of Ugrasen. I don’t even understand that much. The gem was the symbol of my adoration – how could I have given it, but knowing that my brother would be killed for it, I would have given it.’
No matter how intimate the person, no matter how mysteriously, no matter how much the secret is requested to be told such a thing – what you could not digest within yourself, will it be digested within the other? Such discussion gets publicized automatically – gets publicized very quickly. People’s mind is such that it listens to other’s fault discussion with great eagerness and insistence. Everyone tells others that don’t tell anyone, I tell you, and everyone tells others in the same way. This discussion spread in the form of a whisper in the whole of Dwarka.
The maid said to Rukmini ji and she requested while crying holding the feet of Shri Krishna Chandra in the night – ‘ What am I hearing this. You asked Satrajit for his Syamantaka gem?’ No one had the courage to say such a thing to Shri Krishnachandra, to Maharaj Ugrasen, to Vasudev ji or to Satyaki, to Sri Sankarshan. Plagues spread among the general public and grow. There is a lot of delay in reaching the main persons.
‘I told him to offer the gem to Maharaj Ugrasen’-Shri Krishnachandra said in a spontaneous way-‘He said that it is the symbol of his worship, the matter ended. Who told you?’ , How many Syamantaka beads do you want?’ – Sakshat Ramadevi Rukmini, how can she tolerate that someone blames her idol.
Sadness, anger, passion, everything was bursting in his voice – ‘This kinkari has not died’
‘Where do I want Syamantaka’ Shri Krishnachandra lifted Pattamahishi from his feet – ‘But what is the matter?’ ‘Satrajit says that you have killed his brother in the greed of the gem and made his dead body disappear’ Goddess Rukmini told while crying- ‘This rumor has spread among the common people of the city’ ‘Then it is not possible to get rid of this false statement by giving another symantak’ Shri Krishnachandra became serious – ‘that same gem will have to be brought. Wherever he is, I will go out to find him, tomorrow with eminent people, but if there is a delay in my arrival, don’t be upset.’
On the second day in the morning, the royal messengers started running in the city. For the first time, heads of all classes, scholars, elders and eminent people were invited in the administrative general meeting of Dwarka.
Shrikrishna Chandra stood up in that Mahasabha – ‘ It is about my relation but my personality cannot be separated from the administration of Dwarka. The success or failure of my actions affects the entire administration and the people. Satrajit’s younger brother Prasen went out for hunting in a horse and did not return. Satrajit had Devdurlabh Syamantaka Mani. I had asked him for that gem for Yadav Samrat. He declined. That day Prasen went to Syamantaka wearing it in the throat. Now if Satrajit suspects that I have taken the gem after killing his brother, then Satrajit cannot be blamed, but I should also get a chance to remove this stigma on myself. You choose a delegation of neutral, religious, respectable people from among you, with whom I will go to explore Mani and Prasen. It will be mandatory to bear the hardships of the path.
The doubts in the minds of the people were dispelled by the explanation given by Shri Krishnachandra without any objection. Many elders, respected people got angry on Satrajit’s rudeness, but Vasudev said- ‘It is the duty of the administration to find out what happened to Prasen and if Syamantaka stays with someone, the whole of Dwarka will get the benefit of his influence, so he should cannot be lost. He must be researched. With the consent of Maharaj Ugrasen, a group of eminent people of Dwarka was decided. People belonging to Yaduvansh, especially Maharaj Ugrasen and Shri Krishna, were not taken in this. No one urged Satrajit to go along; Because Satrajit was no longer respected in the eyes of the people. He proved to be very low minded. Shrikrishna Chandra took along two persons who were experts in hunting and understood the signs in the forest. Seeing the footprints of Prasen’s horse, he started walking. Everyone else had to follow him. Where the horse passed urine, passed stool, where it ran, where it walked slowly, all this was easily seen by his vision. Showing and explaining those signs to everyone, he went on moving in the forest. (respectively)
