अग्नियोंद्वारा उपदेश

कमलका पुत्र उपकोसल सत्यकाम जाबालके यहाँ ब्रह्मचर्य ग्रहण करके अध्ययन करता था। बारह वर्षोंतक उसने आचार्य एवं अग्रियोंकी उपासना की। आचार्यने अन्य सभी ब्रह्मचारियोंका समावर्तन-संस्कार कर दिया और उन्हें घर जानेकी आज्ञा दे दी। केवल उपकोसलको ऐसा नहीं किया।

उपकोसलके मनमें दुःख हुआ। गुरुपत्नीको उसपर दया आ गयी। उसने अपने पतिसे कहा-‘इस ब्रह्मचारीने बड़ी तपस्या की है, ब्रह्मचर्यके नियमोंका पालन करते हुए विद्याध्ययन किया है। साथ ही आपकी तथा अग्रियोंकी विधिपूर्वक परिचर्या की है। अतएव कृपया इसको उपदेश कर इसका भी समावर्तन कर दीजिये। अन्यथा अग्नि आपको उलाहना देंगे।’ पर सत्यकामने बात अनसुनी कर दी और बिना कुछ कहे ही वे कहीं अन्यत्र यात्रामें चले गये।

उपकोसलको इससे बड़ा क्लेश हुआ। उसने अनशन आरम्भ किया। आचार्यपत्नीने कहा- ‘ब्रह्मचारी ! तुम भोजन क्यों नहीं करते ?’ उसने कहा- ‘माँ, मुझे बड़ा मानसिक क्लेश है, इसलिये भोजन नहीं करूँगा।’अग्नियोंने सोचा इस तपस्वी ब्रह्मचारीने मन लगाकर हमारी बहुत सेवा की है। अतएव उपदेश करके इसके मानसिक क्लेशको मिटा दिया जाय।’ ऐसा विचार करके उन्होंने उपकोसलको ब्रह्मविद्याका यथोचित उपदेश दे दिया। तदनन्तर कुछ दिनों बाद उसके आचार्य सत्यकाम यात्रासे लौटे। इधर उपकोसलका मुखमण्डल ब्रह्मतेजसे देदीप्यमान हो रहा था। आचार्यने पूछा- ‘सौम्य ! तेरा मुख ब्रह्मवेत्ता जैसा दीख रहा है; बता, तुझे किसने ब्रह्मका उपदेश किया ?’ उपकोसलने बड़े संकोचसे सारा समाचार सुनाया। इसपर आचार्यने कहा- यह सब उपदेश तो अलौकिक नहीं है। अब मुझसे उस अलौकिक ब्रह्मतत्वका उपदेश सुन, जिसे भली प्रकार जान लेनेपर-साक्षात् कर लेनेपर पाप-ताप प्राणीको उसी प्रकार स्पर्श नहीं कर पाते, जैसे कमलके पत्तेको जल।’

इतना कहकर आचार्यने उपकोसलको ब्रह्मतत्त्वका रहस्यमय उपदेश किया और समावर्तन संस्कार करके उसे घर जानेकी आज्ञा दे दी।

Upkosal, the son of Kamala, used to study at the place of Satyakam Jabal after taking celibacy. For twelve years he worshiped Acharyas and Agris. The Acharya performed Samavartana-samskar of all the other brahmacharis and allowed them to go home. Only Upkosalko did not do this.
Upkosala felt sad. Guru’s wife felt pity on him. She said to her husband-‘ This celibate has done great penance, has studied by following the rules of celibacy. Along with this, you and the elders have been looked after properly. Therefore, by preaching this, please convert it also. Otherwise Agni will scold you. But Satyakam unheard the matter and without saying anything, he went on a journey somewhere else.
Upkosal had a bigger trouble than this. He started fasting. Acharya’s wife said – ‘Brahmachari! Why don’t you eat?’ He said- ‘Mother, I have a lot of mental distress, so I will not eat.’ The fires thought that this ascetic celibate has served us a lot with his heart. Therefore, his mental troubles should be eradicated by preaching. By thinking like this, he gave proper advice of Brahmavidya to Upkosal. After that, after a few days, his Acharya Satyakam returned from the journey. Here, the face of Upkosalka was becoming resplendent with Brahmatej. Acharya asked – ‘Soumya! Your face is looking like a Brahmavetta; Tell me, who preached Brahma to you?’ Upkosal told the whole news with great hesitation. On this Acharya said – All these teachings are not supernatural. Now hear from me the preaching of that supernatural Brahman, which, after knowing it well and realizing it, sins and heat cannot touch the creature in the same way as water touches a lotus leaf.’
Having said this, the Acharya preached the secret of Brahmatattva to Upkosala and after performing Samavartana Sanskar, allowed him to go home.
