सत्य ही धर्म है
महान् सन्त गुरु नानकदेवजी एक बार सद्विचारोंका प्रचार करते हुए एक नगरमें पहुँचे। वहाँ शाह शरफ नामक फकीर रहते थे। वे गुरुजीकी ख्याति सुनकर उनका सत्संग करने पहुँचे। फकीरने नानकदेवको गृहस्थवाले कपड़े पहने देखा, तो उन्होंने सहज भावसे पूछा- ‘आप तो सन्त हैं, फिर भी आपने न सिर मुँडाया है, न फकीरोंवाले कपड़े पहने हैं। ऐसा क्यों ?’ नानकदेवजीने जवाब दिया- ‘मैं जानता हूँ कि यदि करना ही है, तो मनको साफ करो, सिरको नहीं। कपड़े चाहे जैसे पहन लो, मनको फकीरी बनाओ। कपड़ोंका नहीं, दुर्व्यसनोंका त्याग करनेवाला ही सच्चा फकीर है।’
शाह शरफने अगला प्रश्न किया-‘आप किस मत-सम्प्रदायके सन्त हैं ?’ नानकदेवका उत्तर था- ‘मेरा मत सत्यमार्ग है। सत्य ही मेरी जाति है, यही मेरा धर्म है।’ शाह शरफने अन्तिम प्रश्न किया-‘दरवेश कौन होता है ?’ गुरु नानकदेवने कहा-‘जो सत्यपर अविचल रहे, जो प्रेम एवं करुणा लुटाता हो, वही सच्चा दरवेश है। जो न क्रोध करे, न अभिमान, न स्वयं दुखी हो, न किसीको दुःख दे, हमेशा ईश्वरका ध्यान करता रहे और दूसरोंके सुखकी कामना करता रहे, वही सच्चा दरवेश है।’
सन्त शाह शरफकी तमाम जिज्ञासाओंका समाधान हो गया।

The great saint Guru Nanak Devji once reached a city while preaching good thoughts. There lived a fakir named Shah Sharaf. Hearing the fame of Guruji, he reached for his satsang. When the fakir saw Nanak Dev wearing the clothes of a householder, he asked in a natural way – ‘ You are a saint, yet you have neither shaved your head nor worn the clothes of a fakir. Why so ?’ Nanakdevji replied- ‘I know that if you have to do it, then clean the mind, not the head. Wear whatever clothes you want, make your mind a beggar. The one who gives up addictions, not clothes, is a true fakir.’
Shah Sharf asked the next question-‘Which sect are you a saint?’ Nanakdev’s answer was- ‘My opinion is the path of truth. Truth is my caste, this is my religion.’ Shah Sharf asked the last question – ‘Who is a dervish?’ Guru Nanak Dev said-‘ The one who remains firm on the truth, the one who spreads love and compassion, he is a true darvesh. One who does not get angry, is not proud, is not sad himself, does not give pain to anyone, always meditates on God and wishes for the happiness of others, he is a true dervish.’
All the curiosities of Saint Shah Sharf were solved.
