महात्मा गांधीजी उन दिनों चम्पारनमें थे। एक दिन वे वहाँसे बेतिया जा रहे थे। रातका समय था, ट्रेन खाली थी। महात्माजीको चलना तो तीसरे दर्जेमें ही ठहरा। वे एक सीटपर सो गये। उनके दूसरे साथी दूसरी सीटोंपर बैठ गये। आधी रातको गाड़ी एक स्टेशनपर खड़ी हुई तो एक किसान उसी डिब्बेमें चढ़ा । उसने डिब्बेमें घुसते ही सीधे महात्माजीको धक्का देकर उठाया – ‘उठो, बैठो ! तुम तो ऐसे पसरे पड़े हो जैसे गाड़ी तुम्हारे ही बापकी है।’
महात्माजी उठकर बैठ गये और उनके पास ही बैठकर वह किसान गाने लगा’धन धन गाँधीजी महाराज दुःखीका दुःख मिटानेवाले ।’ वह महात्माजीका दर्शन करने बेतिया जा रहा था। उसे क्या पता कि उसने जिन्हें धक्का दिया है, वे ही महात्माजी हैं और उसका गीत सुनकर अब मुसकरा रहे हैं।
बेतिया स्टेशनपर हजारों व्यक्ति महात्माजीके स्वागतके लिये एकत्र थे। ट्रेनके स्टेशनपर पहुँचते ही जयध्वनिसे आकाश गूँजने लगा। अब किसानको अपनी भूलका पता लगा। वह फूट-फूटकर रोने लगा और महात्माजीके पैरोंपर गिर पड़ा। महात्माजीने उसे उठाया और आश्वासन दिया।
Mahatma Gandhiji was in Champaran those days. One day he was going from there to Bettiah. It was night time, the train was empty. Mahatmaji’s walking remained in the third grade only. He slept on a seat. His other companions sat on other seats. When the train stopped at a station in the middle of the night, a farmer got into the same compartment. As soon as he entered the compartment, he directly pushed Mahatmaji and woke him up – ‘Get up, sit down! You are lying as if the car belongs to your father.’
Mahatmaji got up and sat down and sitting near him, the farmer started singing ‘Dhan Dhan Gandhiji Maharaj, the one who removes sorrows’. He was going to Bettiah to see Mahatmaji. Little does he know that the one whom he pushed is Mahatmaji and now he is smiling after listening to his song.
Thousands of people gathered at Bettiah station to welcome Mahatmaji. As soon as the train reached the station, the sky started echoing with hail. Now the farmer came to know about his mistake. He started crying bitterly and fell at Mahatmaji’s feet. Mahatmaji picked him up and assured him.
