चीनके बादशाहका मन्त्री शाहचांग बहुत थक गया था। उस दिन उसे सबेरे ही बादशाहके सम्मुख एक रिपोर्ट रखनी थी। आधी राततक जागते हुए वह अपने सहायक से रिपोर्ट लिखवाता रहा। रिपोर्ट पूरी करके वह उठा और अपने शयनकक्षकी ओर जाने लगा। इसी समय उसका सहायक भी उठा, किंतु सहायककी असावधानीसे लैम्पको धक्का लग गया। लैम्प गिर पड़ा।सब कागज तेलमें भीग गये और उनमें आग लग गयी। सहायकका तो मुख ही सूख गया ‘काटो तो खून नहीं।’ मन्त्री महोदय लौट पड़े। उन्होंने धीरेसे कहा ‘यह संयोगकी बात है, तुम्हारा कोई अपराध तो है नहीं। बैठो, हम दोनों फिरसे उस रिपोर्टको तैयार कर लेंगे।’ अपने आसनपर वे बैठ गये और कागजोंको सम्हालकर रिपोर्ट लिखवाना आरम्भ कर दिया।
